Peaceful Protests
Does peaceful resistance to laws positively or negatively impact a free society? Mainstream media portrays peaceful protests as events that should not not take place. They often show their biased point of view of the situation. Peaceful resistance to laws has been proven effective in many instances in our nations history, whether them being civil rights movements or women’s rights movements. Peaceful resistance to laws positively effect a free society because they help everyone to act out on their beliefs. Many minorities in America’s history have been suppressed of their base rights as humans, take the right to vote as an example. Voting rights have been an issue for anyone other than a white male who owns property. African Americans and women were the two major minorities who suffered from the suppression of their right to vote. African American men got their right to vote …show more content…
Women are a strong willed species who will fight for what is right, and that they did. The women’s suffrage movement was peacefully fought for 70 years and it provided women with a voice that was heard for the first time. Women protested constantly , their first call to action being the Seneca Falls Convention in 1848 , all the way to 1920 when they 19th Amendment was ratified. This is one instance of proof of where peaceful protest benefited a party in the long run. Another instance of where peaceful protest positively affected the society is the States’ Rights movement. The purpose for this movement was to challenge the authority of the central government. States should have their own rights when it comes to issues like same-sex marriage and environmental acts. The

    It depends on certain situations whether peaceful resistance to laws can have a positive impact or have a negative impact on a free society. Majority of peaceful assemblies can give the group of activist their freedom of speech and views towards something they believe in. Famous public figures like Claudette Colvin and Rosa Park's civil disobedience had a powerful effect on the world. Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to move her seat for a white men while sitting on a segregated white bus in Montgomery, Alabama on December 1st, 1955. Similarly, Claudette Colvin found herself in the same predicament and she was declared the first woman to have that sort of refusal or peaceful resistance towards bus regulations back then. Even though they both knew their views were going to get them into serious consequences with the Jim Crow Laws, they spoke their views and truths about the world during that time. In Rosa Park's situation, fortunately her civil disobedience was a "peaceful resistance towards the law."
