In the opening scene of Peaky Blinders, Tommy Shelby’s identity is hidden; these enigma codes show that he could be dangerous. The colours used in this whole scene are grimy, muddy and dirty colours such and brown and grey, Tommy blends in with his surroundings as if he is a normal character but as the residents react to his presence by clearing off, this shows that Tommy could be a fearsome character and that people are afraid of him. The shots used to create this scene resemble the western genre, with him riding down the street with long shots showing only his back and some shots showing the side of him as if the people hiding from him are filming him gives off a frightening feel, with the non diegetic music above using stringed instruments calm the scene down as if nothing serious will happen.
Grace’s first scene is shown in a similar way to Tommy’s with a mid shot following her walking towards the pub, her Costume codes are a bit different to Tommy’s as she is noticeable very easily with a light green outfit that is also very fancy with gives the impression that she is rich. The sound codes are only non-diegetic music of a type of twinkly sound, quite like a very high octave on a piano this music represents her as being a “damsel in distress” and being weak, also the main attraction for male viewers. The ash falling from the surrounding factories resembles snow falling over Grace as she enters the shot.
