The two main types of diagnostic aids are essential diagnostic aids and supplemental diagnostic aids. Starting with essential aides there is case history, clinical examinations, study casts, radiographs, including periapical, bitewing and panoramic as well as photographs. Supplemental aids are not essential and include specialized radiographs such as cephlometric radiographs, occlusal intra-oral films, selected lateral jaw views and cone shift technique to name a few.
In order to diagnose the type of orthodontic treatment a patient needs, the orthodontist must recognize the characteristics of dentofacial deformity or malocclusion define the problem and design a treatment that is based on the individual needs of the patient.
