In Pedro Páramo, many of the characters introduced are either dead or they die soon after the reader meets them. Due to the prominent aspect of death in the novel, the author, Juan Rulfo structured the city the novel takes place in, Comala, as purgatory. When someone ends up in purgatory they have committed a sin, however they loved God completely, so they are placed there until their sins are forgiven, then they go to Heaven. By creating characters that remain in purgatory after their deaths, Juan Rulfo allows the narration of the novel to shift between people and time periods using a narrative style called magical realism. On his parent’s wedding night Doloritas didn’t want to sleep with her husband because she had been warned not to, she begged Eduviges to sleep with him in her place. Eduviges fulfilled her friend’s wish, to Doloritas’s benefit Pedro never found out, because all they did was sleep. This shows Pedro didn’t love Doloritas enough to know if he was in bed with her, therefore the reader can infer that, Pedro was solely marring her to nullify his debt to her family. Through the narrative shift through space, the reader analyzes Pedro’s actions with a major bias, because the people Juan has gathered information from have varying opinions of Pedro. Abundio, in a drunken rage kills Pedro, therefore he won’t be praising Pedro, on the other hand Eduviges liked Don Pedro, so she won’t say anything negative about him.
During Juan’s talk with Eduviges the reader also learns of Miguel Páramo, Juan’s step brother. During Eduviges narrative the reader learns that Miguel allegedly raped Ana, Father Renteria’s niece.
