JUAN SPEAKING
- Juan Perciado's father is Pedro Paramo - Promised his mother that he would find his father and make him pay- reason why Juan came to Comala (3) - "...and from promising so often I kept repeating the promise even after I had pulled my hands free from her death grip" (3/1).
- August: Mother "guides" Juan to Comala, but he only sees a "sorry-looking place" (4). - The man tells Juan that they will be glad to see him, whoever he is (5). - SOUND: "A flock of crows swept across the empty sky, shrilling 'caw, caw, caw'" (5/last). - They went up and downhill always DESCENDING (5). - Man tells him it will get hotter (6). - DESCRIPTION OF TOWN: "H town sits on the coals of the earth, at the very mouth of hell. They say that when people from there die and go to hell, the come back for a blanket" (6/1). - SYMBOL: "The picture of my mother I was carrying in my pocket felt hot against my heart...It was all I had" (6).
- Finds out that Pedro Paramo had died years ago (7) - SOUND: "Now here I was in this hushed town. I could hear my footsteps on the cobbled paving stones. Hollow footsteps, echoing against walls stained red by the setting sun" (7/last). - Sees abandoned houses- DOORLESS (8) - I woman with inhumane qualities tells Juan that the house is beside the bridge (8) - Hears voices very clear- mother told him this would happen
- Eduviges Dyada gives him a place to rest (9) - SHADOWS: "... I saw shadows looming on either side, and sensed that we were walking down a narrow passageway opened between bulky shapes" (9). - Tells him that his mother told her that he was coming (10). - DOORLESS: "This room had no doors, except for the one we had entered. She lighted the candle, and I could see the room was completely empty" (10). - Dyada tells Juan that his mother and her were best friends (11).
