I know that having the ability to a good listener and be open minded and direct the mentee thought process to allow them to see things from another perspective is really important.…
With the list of positive benefits to group mentoring there are a few risks that can interfere with the learning and development of mentees and mentors:…
I wanted to let you know that because I was treated poorly at your Willoughby location, I went to your Mentor location and received the best service ever. I went into your Willoughby store where 3 employees were talking among themselves for a good 15 minutes before I was even acknowledged. When I requested a phone to add to our company plan I was informed that they did not have any at this store but no other option was offered. I left in frustration. This is a common occurrence…
There is only a history of this controversy as long as video games have been around, but shorter than that because in videogames early years there were almost no violence in most of the games. Like pong for example you would only hit a ball back and forth, sounds boring right but in actuality it were so popular in its day then something better replaced it (glazer, 2). A never ending sequence where video games will only advance as time goes on. This is an arguable issue because of the belief that video games are bad for you but, there was and is no proof that video games are bad for you. This has been an issue for about as long as the N64 has been around.…
In the summer of 2005 I had the opportunity to intern at The Franklin Institute Museum in PA. This museum is one of the many well known science museums across the country. The Franklin Institute Museum is a unique museum that gives the experience of exploring science in a fun and fascinating way. The museum touches bases on many areas of science such as, anatomy, physics, environmental sciences, and space. The Franklin Institute is named after Benjamin Franklin and is the home of his national memorial statue. It was founded in 1824 and its first building was established in 1825; since then its location has changed with in the city of Philadelphia but it still remains to be one of the oldest and premier centers of science education and development in the country.…

As schools become increasing diverse, cultural competence is essential. Thus, school counselors must have awareness, knowledge, and skills to help the needs of the Asian student population seek higher education. As a minority, I believe that multicultural counseling can greatly impact the lives of students. During my high school years, I felt unaccepted and not understood by my assigned high school counselor because she wasn’t cultural competence. Because my assigned high school counselor couldn’t understand why I chose to apply to only one university, Fresno State, I wasn’t able to go to her when I had questions about college. What she couldn’t understand was that although I wanted to earn an education for myself, I also wanted to stay in Fresno to help financially support my parents. Tatman (2004) states, “Counselors must acknowledge the value that the Hmong place on the family and community and the importance this value plays in all aspects of their lives”.…
Being a junior in high school has its perks: I have more high school experience, I earn more freedoms as I get older, and I am only a year away from graduation. Despite these good things, being a junior is not always easy. There is a significant problem that I have to address: my future. It is a big, abstract puzzle that demands to be solved. Since the only thing standing between me and legal freedom is my final year of high school, I have to make plenty of preparation for my future. Every student prepares for their future beyond high school in different ways; for me, I use the resources that are given to me in order to propel me toward an excellent future.…
1. Why are you interested in serving as a peer mentor again? I am interested in serving as a peer mentor again next year because of the experiences and opportunities that I have had so far. Looking back on my experiences in Econ 110, I appreciated the guidance I received from the class and from my peer mentors. I am excited to continue to help the incoming freshman class adjust to college by preparing them for life as an Agricultural Business student. More specifically preparing them for the CALS career fair, working with each student of their four-year plans, and being available for any questions they may have.…
I believe that I am qualified to be a peer mentor because I live by the saying “Abstain to Attain” everyday. As a young adult among so much peer pressure, it is hard not to cave in. I understand though, drugs, sex, and drinking alcohol isn’t worth it. I have too much to lose in life if I get pregnant at a young age, or if I become an alcoholic or a drug addict. My family is counting on me as well. I will be a first generation student and I will not let them down because I gave into peer pressure and went down the wrong path.…
Teenage years can be a challenging time for many individuals. Beginning at the age of 11 through 20, adolescence is defined as a “transitional period in the human life span, linking childhood and adulthood” (Santrock 2009). At this point, the person is no longer a child, but not yet an adult. This makes it a very critical and sensitive time frame for identity formation.…
Communication and collaboration is very important when working in teams. When everyone in the team doesn’t work together to meet a specific goal, the team will not succeed. Everyone in the team must understand that they all are not the same, nor have the same opinions, feelings, learning styles, or personalities.…
Throughout lower and middle school at lab, the buddy program was always my favorite. I loved the connections and friendships it made, and I was always excited about the challenge of being a big buddy. Because I was always one of the quieter, gentler people in my class, I was often paired with the shyest child in the class we had been partnered with. I felt as if I had the potential to begin to understand them, maybe even a bit more than some of classmates, because I had been very similar to them. I had started out at Lab afraid of teachers and nervous around my peers, something I was constantly drawing on as I tried to make my buddy open up. I was paired with a preschooler who had a fear of older buddies, as his past experience with them had…
The crown jewel of my personal achievements is a tutoring service I established for sixth graders at my local elementary school, run by volunteers I recruited, both for the undeniable positive effects it has had on the students, as well as what it has meant for me personally in demonstrating my capabilities and the potential of what I can accomplish. It all began when I joined a small math tutoring club at my high school, rather than following the many students who joined Key Club just because “it looks good for college admissions”. I felt that I was not being true to myself if I settled for something I did not have a passion for, and it quickly became evident that I had made the right choice.…
