You’ll need to fill out an application form, have a CRB check, and an interview. Having convictions may not prevent you from becoming a peer mentor volunteer; in fact, your experience may be helpful to others.

We ask that our peer mentor volunteers consider themselves to be currently stable and in recovery from substance misuse.

When it comes to my career path I have always wanted to work with children but as I got older I developed a great passion for music. Music has always been around me, my dad was a big music buff. Since my father’s passing I feel like I have a special connection to him when I sing and listen to music. I’ve always been shy when it came to singing in front of an audience until I began going to Bethune-Cookman University. While I was enrolled there I joined a band and was singing in a local lounge every weekend and I loved it! Once I moved back home and enrolled in Georgia State I felt it was time to break out of my shell and truly begin to perform.…

I interviewed mentor Lesley Barajas who works in EOP central. Lesley and I both have seen different issues in our neighborhood. Lesley and I are from totally different areas. She is from near San Diego, and I am from the valley. These issues keep on recurring in our neighborhoods, and we are tired of them. In Lesley’s, neighborhood, bullying is the biggest issue, and would say it is an epidemic. In my community the biggest issue is single-parent households. Lesley also mentioned depression and peer pressure from negative friends affecting her community. I also put down racial discrimination because I feel that racism is everywhere now and it affects people in their lives.…

The four most important aspects of my role as a peer tutor would be showing leadership, communication, flexibility and having a positive impact on students. Each of these aspects are important and all contribute to my role as a peer tutor, without any of them I don't think I would perform as well in the classroom. Showing leadership and having a positive impact on others have changed over the course of the semester. At the beginning of the semester my leadership skills weren't as inclined as they currently are. Over the course of the semester, I have gained confidence and demonstrated leadership and initiative while peer tutoring. Also, I saw a change in how students approached me; they are presently more comfortable asking me questions in…

I feel that I did well in this class (Sprg2016) HMNS-1200-001: Practicum I: Service Learning and throughout my Service Learning placement with The Kent Center. Although I could have done more, but keeping in line with CCRI and The Kent Center Policies in regards to student interns, I feel that I didn’t have the opportunity to really give 100% to the clients that were assigned to me. Due to the fact that I, as a student could not transport one particular client to his Alcoholics Anonymous and Gamblers Anonymous meetings. However, I did meet him at these meetings that I, myself set up for him. I found it somewhat difficult because I had to work around the “staff” schedule, as far as when the driver would be able to take him. Because the particular…

One of the greatest leadership roles I have taken on has been at my school, which was deciding to become a peer mentor. The focus of this role was to help underclassmen by influencing them to further their education. Attending the training for this program opened my eyes to the endless opportunities that they had just by doing well in school. I knew that by becoming a mentor I would develop important dexterities such as being accountable for someone who needs guidance. The excitement in being peer mentor was impacting young minds with positivity about their futures. I supported my younger peers that I was assigned to by advocating for their success and pushing them to do more than the minimal in in order to excel. Pushing them to do their absolute…

Mentoring at a high risk school has been my most rewarding extracurricular activity. While I have always enjoyed volunteering, I did it because it was apparently helpful and often fun. Mentoring an underprivileged first grade boy made me realize that a single person can truly make an impact. I gained an entirely new perspective when I talked with, listened to, and helped him with schoolwork, his home life, and more. His academics and disciplinary troubles improved dramatically simply because I showed that I cared. His struggles were immensely different from those I have experienced for a multitude of reasons, so I was always learning and growing even though I was focused on his growth rather than my own. I learned that by trying to help someone,…

I would share with my student peers especially the one that is interested in medical school and my mentor about what I have experienced throughout the mentorship experience by creating a small group. I would also give them as much information and knowledge that I gain from this opportunity, that I might had experience being as a true scientist. In additions, I would also help other who interested to participate in this mentorship experience next year, by addressing my struggles and how I overcome everything.…

The very first day that I went to Taft to cadet teach I was very nervous. I was nervous to leave the high school, to get in my car and drive to Taft. I was terrified to park and walk in. I thought to myself “Where am I going to park?”,”Do we go to the front office first?”,”What if they do not like us?” I had all of these questions running through my head. So we parked at Taft and we walking in with the rest of the group. It was weird waiting for the doors to unlock, but as I was waiting I noticed the new doors they put in that were more safe and secure. Once the doors were unlocked we walked in through the commons, up the stairs to the front office. They already had our sign-in book waiting for us when we walked in.…

Wisconsin has started to sue the parents of some school bullies. Parents are not happy about it although they have been given a warning. After the warning if the problem still persists, then the parents will get sued. Is this the right way to deal with bullies in school? Now schools have considered using student mentors to pair up with a bully. Bullies are not a force to be reckoned with. Several schools have tried multiple ways to declare themselves a “bully free zone” but none have had the best impact. When the wisconsin schools started suing, the bullying increased, and the schools started to notice that in reality, parents do not have full control of their child’s behavior. Some schools such as Cloonan middle school have started using student…
