In addition to my enthusiasm for investing in young lives, I have done some volunteering as a teaching assistant to get some hands-on classroom experience for formal teaching. My experience at the school allowed me to acquire a number of skills and also help enhance my weaker ones. The key skills and strength that I possess for success include my enthusiasm and dedication to my assigned duties and my ability to support and inspire young people through being a good listener to them and offering appropriate advice. I am also highly skilled in assisting the instructor in supervision of students’ arrival and departure time, performing clerical and record keeping tasks and maintaining discipline of the classroom in the absence of the instructor. One of my greatest strengths is helping maintain a well-disciplined learning environment, with minimal interruptions and maximum productivity. This is achieved by pulling misbehaving students aside, reinforcing positive behaviour, and implementing a reward system.…
Every student has a personal tutor, who is responsible for building a close working relationship with them, and being…
My role as a Tutor is complex and demanding. Not only am I a professional individual; I am also a friend, mentor, counsellor and confidant to all of my students. Often my students lack confidence in themselves and their abilities. Using techniques I have learnt through the course of my life and studies, I gain their trust and confidence and in turn this builds their confidence in themselves and their studies.…
There was an older adult that told them to stop arguing and pick up the food. They then argued over who should pick it up. So, I came over and asked them, who was going to be the bigger person and they both raced to pick it up first. This showed how these students wanted to be treated like adults. If I had not connected with these students earlier I may not have been able to resolve this situation. This displays how important it is for young children to have a mentor or role model to talk and engage with. Through the various interactions I have had with students thus far, I have learned to be humble and grateful, and to connect with people because there is so much to learn from others.…

The four most important aspects of my role as a peer tutor would be showing leadership, communication, flexibility and having a positive impact on students. Each of these aspects are important and all contribute to my role as a peer tutor, without any of them I don't think I would perform as well in the classroom. Showing leadership and having a positive impact on others have changed over the course of the semester. At the beginning of the semester my leadership skills weren't as inclined as they currently are. Over the course of the semester, I have gained confidence and demonstrated leadership and initiative while peer tutoring. Also, I saw a change in how students approached me; they are presently more comfortable asking me questions in…
Every week at a nearby elementary school, I tutor children from kindergarten to sixth grade as a part of their YMCA after school care program. Typically, I work with the same group of students to finish their math homework, work on a project for social studies, or help them sound out new words. By watching them thrive in a positive environment and develop a love for learning, they constantly teach me new things. After being at school all day and dealing with ample amounts of stress, their innocent and bright minds cause me to ground myself and realize what is at the core of all of my hard work in academics: a thirst for knowledge. Perhaps the most rewarding thing has been witnessing them improve dramatically, such as being able to read a word with ease that we sounded out multiple times the previous week, with a smile on their face and a new sense of confidence and accomplishment. Steadfastly teaching them that by working hard and not giving up they can reach their goals, it leaves me with such a proud feeling when I see them putting it into action. Tutoring has been a two-way street: the children have impacted my life in a positive and meaningful way just like I have impacted…
Yes, last week was really difficult for me! I'm pursuing my degree in nursing through Arizona College and doing my prerequests through Keiser University, so I was able to take advantage of the free tutoring available at Arizona College. I put my kids in daycare for the week and I was at the Arizona College campus from 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. studying and being tutored. I feel that I understand the concepts that we are studying each week, however the math portion is what I'm having a hard time with since I havent taken a math class in about ten years. I feel that I'm able to do the problems but they are taking me a long time to complete and since the time frame for the test is fifty minutes I run out of time and I'm left guessing on some of the…
I have had the chance to serve as a tutor, a peer advisor, and as a teaching assistant for a variety of courses while I was an undergraduate and in my current role as an AmeriCorps VISTA. Through these positions, I had to chance to lead class periods and I have found that I enjoy teaching at the university level, as compared to the times that I have helped with elementary and middle school classes. I fully enjoy seeing students finally understand a concept they have had trouble with and connecting students with their passion. Watching them take that spark and ignite it into something much larger than themselves has been one of the most rewarding…
Throughout high school, I was involved in multiple extracurricular activities, including, but not limited to, Friends of Rachel and Desert Vista Peer Tutoring (DVPT). During my time as the secretary of Friends of Rachel, I managed all the attendance and arranged all meeting times for the club. I especially enjoyed being the receptionist for Friends of Rachel because through my tasks, I was able to develop my organizational and planning skills. Meanwhile, during the two days per week I spent at DVPT, I tutored hundreds of students in subjects ranging from mathematics, science, history, English, and Spanish. I, also, took on the role of receptionist for DVPT where I facilitated the entire tutoring center by pairing tutors and tutees, marking…
The Independent study mentorship program or better known as ISM is truly what it sounds, as it is an independent study in which the student is not only treated as a learner of the teacher, the ISM instructor, but yet accepted as a fellow thinker because independent research and an innovative approach is highly encouraged. The reason as to why I would like to be a part of this brilliant opportunity is because I get to study and research the topics and information that would fit into the profession that I seek to get more opportunities other than the psychology classes that I already had and will take next year, to have a chance to see how the environment in the real world is while…
I have always been the person to help my friends and classmates with their schoolwork, as I enjoy the feeling of fulfillment and achievement I gain whenever I help them overcome challenges. To me, if I had made their life easier or helped them in any way, then I had done my job as a friend and as a classmate. Often times, I found myself offering to tutor my friends when they were struggling, and it became something I genuinely enjoyed doing. So, I sought to give this help to more people, and in the beginning of junior year, I helped start a tutoring club at my school. It involved helping kids from the local middle school with their classwork and schoolwork. The club started off with a very small number of kids a day, often times the number…
Like I said earlier was that I love to walk by and see them with their happy faces all the time it just brightens my day. In 7th grade I would just see them and not know their names. But now i know who they are and I think they are some of the neatest people I know. On the downside of being a peer tutor I didn't really like all of the projects. The only one I actually found interesting was the R-word poster. I liked that because I was able to go online and read the stories on the website. Being a peer tutor was a little challenging. In my opinion the worst parts were when your student just did not want to cooperate at all. They just wanted to free draw or go back to class. So we kind of had a little moment but in the end it was all okay. I found this challenging because like I said I think they are the neatest people I know, so it's hard to argue with them a little. I don't want to hurt their feelings. But I know it is part of helping them. I really enjoyed this class and I feel like now I am better at handling situations. I also am more comfortable around people who have…
I have a unique perspective that I could bring to Peer Advising because I am an out of state student so I recognize the time and money commitment that coming to the University of Kansas can be. I have had to work multiple jobs at a time to ensure that I get an education. I come from a very diverse community back home in Houston. I am a Multiracial Latina.…
In our everyday lives we run into many problems that are hard to fix. These problems come at any age, but the quicker they are handled, the easier they are to fix. Sometimes children can’t come to their parents about problems because they are afraid of the consequences of their actions, so they just try and handle problems on their own. This is where more problems arise. Most kids don’t talk to each other about their situations because they are either afraid to, or they don‘t have someone they can trust. Peer mediation is a program designed especially for this area of concern. This new endeavor was introduced to me through the public school system. Peer mediation is a problem-solving process that is helpful for kids of all ages (Farifax).…
