One of the most influential soccer players in the world, Pele, grew up on the streets of South America in Brazil. It’s hard to believe it’s possible for a man who has become so famous in the world of soccer never even owned a pair of shoes until he was seven, but it also shows his fans how someone can succeed with hard work and determination. Pele’s fame spread quickly, and ultimately introduced the United States to the game of soccer when he led his team to win the world cup. He had played his last game in New York on October 1, 1977 and his career had lasted for 22 years. Pele had been carried off the field crying, not from tears of sadness, but tears of joy on his teammates´ shoulders. In the biography ¨Pelé,¨ James Buckley Jr. stated ¨...Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods pales when compared to the adoration Pelé enjoyed,” which is the pure truth (Buckley). Pele, when younger, had grown up into a poor family which couldn’t afford a soccer ball. So, kicking around a bundle of socks is all that they could do until Pele was 15. He had shown the world that African American people can rise to the top and accomplish things just as good as whites, poor or wealthy. Pele gave people hope, and that is exactly what they needed at the time. For instance, according to the article on the website “Biography.com,” the text stated “Four years later, in England, a series of brutal attacks by opposing defenders again forced him to the sidelines with leg injuries…” and Pele still made it through to continue playing (Bio.com). This shows that Pele was a fighter for anything that he believes in even if it was hard and took long and extensive
