Pellagra is caused by the deficiency of niacin and/or tryptophan in our diet. Niacin also called vitamins B-3 is a water-soluble vitamin, it means it is not stored in the body and they are excreted from the body through urine or feces. That is the reason why the body need regular supply of this vitamins in our diet.
Its main function is to help the cellular metabolic pathway to convert food to energy. Niacin is found in poultry, tuna and other fish, enriched bread and cereals, beef, and peanuts. This vitamin can also be synthesized by our body from the amino acid called tryptophan. Thus, our body is able to synthesize up to 50% of the needed niacin because per 60 milligrams of tryptophan 1 milligram of niacin is produced. And, our daily need

This disorder is caused by insufficient intake of vitamin C in our daily diet. Vitamin c main function is to synthesize collagen. This protein is found mainly in skin, bones, and connective tissue and it provides structural support, strength, and some degree of elasticity within the body. Scurvy is a very rare disorder, however elderly people, alcoholics, and people with a diet lack of fresh fruits and vegetables are most like to have deficiency in vitamin C. Major sources of vitamin C are citric fruits such as orange and grapefruit, but it’s also found in sweet fruits like papaya, mango, strawberries, and cantaloupes.
Explain the function of the following: Zinc, Iodine, Iron, Magnesium, Calcium and Chromium.
Zinc is an essential mineral found in cells throughout the body. It plays an important role in the immune system, wound healing, and the breakdown of carbohydrates and lipids. Its main functions are the DNA synthesis, metabolism of protein, development of sexual organs and bones, cell division and growth.
Animal food that’s is protein rich food is also rich in zinc such as beef, poultry, and milk, nuts, whole grains, legumes, and yeast. This is also found as a synthetic supplement and over the counter
