2. Which carrier would you recommend that Bob consider for elimination? Why? I would recommend that Bob consider eliminating Best Freight (BF) as a carrier. While BF performed higher than Certaint Carriers (CC) in on-time delivery and billing accuracy, BF fell behind for loads rejected and loads with damaged claims. These two key performance indicators (KPIs) are two of the three measures of service quality. Service quality means doing things right, the first time (Coyle, et al. p. 430), and are key to the success of supply chains. I believe BF’s customer satisfaction rating will begin to drop unless these KPIs improve.

3. If Bob decides to keep all three carriers, what should each of them work to improve? Allied Transport (AT) provided the best service out of the three carriers. The main improvement area for AT is loads with damaged claims. AT may want to take a bit more time ensuring that the load is property secured, and that their drivers are taking driving precautions. On-time delivery may be coming at a cost of damaged goods; which can eventually affect the amount of loads rejected, and customer satisfaction ratings. As discussed previously, BF must improve loads rejected and loads with damaged claims. The ultimate service quality is the execution of perfect deliveries (Coyle, et al. p. 431). Until these two scores are improved, BF cannot be recommended as the primary carrier. CC received perfect scores for loads rejected and loads with damaged claims,

    8. BJ’s Wholesale has a lot of improvement that can be done to boost revenue growth and overall financial performance. They should almost model Jim Sinegal and Costco to begin with. From reading this case, I have gathered that BJ’s Warehouse spends entirely too much money on unnecessary things. It has been proven by Costco and even Sams that not much ‘extra’ stuff is needed to succeed in the industry. I believe it may be the fact that they came in later,…

Identify the quality issues that need to be addressed: The United Parcel Service is the world’s largest package delivery company. Clearly the FAA does not think UPS is doing such a great job in that department. In thinking about the reasons why they may not be maintaining their aircraft, a few ideas come to mind. First, aircraft repairs take time and money. With profits of 5.8 billion dollars last year, it is safe to assume cost was not the issue. Time is the single biggest thing UPS has to deal with.…

b). Express Delivery: Express delivery options basically help in reducing the lead-times associated in each of the stages of the supply chain. As a matter of fact lead-time is one of the major causes to add to the variability in the supply chain, as a result enhancing the bullwhip effect across the upstream stages. Due to the availability of information and the express delivery options that are being offered today; for example, by FedEx, UPS etc, the suppliers are able to ship the components at a faster rate to the manufacturers and similarly the warehouses to the retailers. Thus Express Delivery options are able to resolve the bullwhip effect to a great extent, which is providing an opportunity for the players in the supply chain to plan well and effectively. Also, as…

Susan Weber, the new president and CEO of SAB Distributions has offered a new collaborated relationship to Jean Beierlein, president and CEO of Central Transport. Dramatic changes in the market have changed SAB, and it continues to get worse. SAB is losing the competitive advantage over other companies entering the distribution market, and it is causing SAB to use a different approach. According to Susan, SAB needs to change, and get away from the “status que”. SAB has decided to expand to take on some larger retailers in the Mid-Atlantic States and provide more services like a 3PL (third-party logistics). 3PL’s are used to outsource the majority of the companies’ logistic services (Rouse, 2010).…

When they launched the product there was no strong player offering a refrigerated whole grain product and with people looking for healthier options this gave them a great advantage. The goal of the Laura Ashley and FedEx alliance was to alter the customer service levels of Laura Ashley by offering improved reliability, speed, and frequency. The alliance was a good strategic move for both parties, but more so for Laura Ashley. The agreement had its pros and cons, but overall benefits both companies. The agreement strengthens the competitiveness for both companies. This helps Laura Ashley focus on its product, by having FedEx focus on more efficient, lower cost distribution. This also affects the future retail capabilities for Laura Ashley, while adding onto FedEx’s business with LA. The BLS division of FedEx now has an opportunity to utilize its global assets and potentially open up new future markets. However the steps to achieve these goals have barriers to overcome as well. The major strength is transparency. Making all data available to all parties involved is crucial for success with this alliance. This improves the overall efficiency of the distribution process and saves money in the process. Inventory carrying costs are significantly lower now that all products can be recorded and seen. The two companies are also going to integrate their information technology systems. This will also enhance the distribution and logistics for Laura Ashley. There will be significantly less errors and confusion with the same technology. Logistics and distribution were a major problem because each market area would have different systems within the same company. However, consolidating systems can also be troublesome. Some of these projects can be expensive, counter-productive and overwhelming. The company could have built a common database that combines data from the old system. More importantly, there can be a high degree of disruption with the alliance. With already horrible customer service levels, enhanced disruption could be the “last straw” for some…
