One individual from each of the following groups was assessed: Chinese, Filipino, West India and I, an African-American born in the urban area of Philadelphia. Health maintenance is how an individual prevents illness and maintains maximum function. In the African American community health promotion is being geared toward the youth and the elderly, programs such as Get Moving, the Silver Sneaker club are just a few programs that encourage a healthier diet and place a strong emphasis on exercise. The African American diet is very high in fats and starches; it includes a lot of fried foods and meals that are layered in cheeses and sugars. As Healthcare transform into primary care, the importance of education and teaching the public, community, schools, and family members, and most of all our patients about the importance of Diabetes prevention and decreasing complications related to diabetes. As a future nurse practitioner with the desire to serve the Hispanic community, a knowledge of perceived barriers in assisting this population is necessary to provide effective care. Certain antecedents to perceived barriers may be sense of control, self-efficacy, and empowerment (McCloskey & Flenniken, 2010, p. 111). Also, Hispanic Americans perspectives of health compared to that of the provider may be additional barriers to reaching desired outcomes (Hunt, Arar, Larme, Rankin, & Anderson, 1998, p. 657). I pose the preceding PICOT question as a starting point to understanding perceived barriers to achieving controlled A1C levels as an indicator of positive glycemic control and health outcomes for Hispanic Americans.…
The different theories would be used in an effort to identify the areas of concern, and then the chosen theory is used to create an effective objective for the client. When asked, the student interviewed explained that he was not familiar with many of the different theories prior to taking the course. With this statement, the interviewer asked the student what theories discussed during the course would he use to enhance his cultural sensitivity when working with Hispanic and Latino clients. He immediately explained his new appreciation for the Strength Perspective and explained how he as a social worker often focused on the lack of resources that many Latino and Hispanic clients have, and when reading about this theory he realized the importance to focus on the strengths.
