Penelope As A Mother Figure In The Odyssey
Penelope is the most well known character in The Odyssey to represent a mother figure. Penelope and Odysseus have a son named Telemachus which Penelope protects with all her heart. The characteristics of a mother are protection, love and provide balance in the family. Penelope is seen giving Telemachus all the love and protection she can. To provide the balance that is needed in a family she comes makes up her mind to remarry again after she comes to a conclusion that Odysseus has died on his way home. She is a complete mess without Odysseus and needs a male to lead the family. “It takes the leadership and masculine presence of her son to bring her to her senses” (The Narrow Role…). This shows how Penelope can't be on her own and raise Telemachus
