Sherman Alexie uses stylistic devices throughout The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian to develop the character of the protagonist Junior’s rich, white girlfriend, Penelope. First and foremost Sherman Alexie uses an illustration to show how beautiful Junior thinks Penelope is. On Junior's first day he sees Penelope and is struck by how pretty she is. Junior uses the words “totally and absolutely gorgeous”. This shows that penelope has instantly captured juniors attention with her looks. It brings out how stunning penelope is. On the other hand,Alexie uses dialogue to show that Penelope is friendly on the outside but she can harsh even if she doesn't
realize it. It is junior’s first day at his new white school, When he sits behind penelope. “‘What's your name?’ She asked. ‘Junior’ I said. She laughed and told her girlfriend at the next desk that my name was junior. They both laughed. Word spread around the room and pretty soon everybody was laughing.” This conversation between penelope and junior shows that penelope is kind by asking about junior but is harsh when she laughs and spreads it around the class. Finally Alexie uses detailed description to show penelope’s pain. Junior and penelope just recently started dating and thay are at penelope's house. Junior is reflecting on his recent conversation with penelope. “She’s in pain and i love her, sort of loved her, I guess, so I kind of had to love her pain too.” this shows how penelope is a deep character. She can laugh and be funny but inside she's in pain and junior still has to love her. This is how Sherman Alexie uses dialogue, Illustration and detailed description to show penelope’s character traits in The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian.
