AN ETHICAL PERSPECTIVE AND ITS EFFECT ON CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
1. INTRODUCTION: At the bottom of many events in the world is the effect of religion. It is certainly older than many of her adherents. Religious leaders, sects and proponents of different theories of religion have come and gone. Dispensations have come with very many different religious experiences and till date, we are faced with the vicissitudes and dynamics of religion. Every adherent of certain faith will have something to say as it concerns the philosophy of what they practice. For Tylor and Frazer, religion is a systematized animism, and it exists to help people explain events which would otherwise be incomprehensible if it weren 't for invisible spirits behind everything1. In Freud’s psychoanalytical opinion there are hidden psychological motives behind religion, as a result he alluded that religion is a form of mass neurosis. It exists only as a response to deep emotional conflicts and weaknesses. Since it is nothing more but a by-product of psychological distress, it should be possible to eliminate the illusion of religion by alleviating that distress.2
In his judgement, in an attempt to elucidate to us the social function of religion, Durkheim focused on the importance of the concept of the "sacred" and its relevance to the welfare of the entire community. For him, religious beliefs are thus symbolic expressions of social realities - without those social realities serving as a foundation, religious beliefs would have no meaning3. In other words, social impact is key for holistic engagement of religion. Durkheim attempts to see the sacredness of religion and the social impact it should have on the society. Upholding the sacredness of religion and in an attempt to avoid reductionism, Eliade went fully beyond the natural or intellectual analysis and conclusion as he maintained that religion is primarily about belief in the supernatural4.
