People Come and Go
People come and people go,
In and out of your life and so,
When one shines bright among the rest,
And is there when needed, you’re truly blessed.
That is how I see you, friend of mine,
And why I’m sending this Valentine.

Thoughts of affection fill my mind
When Valentine’s Day is near;
I think about my closest friends,
Those who are most dear.
And on that special Valentine list,
You’re at the top, my friend.
I love you, and I know for sure,
Our friendship will never end!

If I could create the perfect friend,
One of my own design,
A friend to be my companion,
A friend for a Valentine,
I’d build her with a giving heart
Filled with kindness, too,
A friend who’s also lots of fun,
But I've already got one—you

A friend is like a Valentine
She has a loving heart.
You share with her your feelings;
Her listening is an art.
A friend is like a Valentine;
Like candy, she is sweet.
And that description fits you, friend;
You make my life complete!

What can I say to let you know that your friendship means everything to me.
How can I make you aware that my life is so much better and happier because you’re in it.
What can I do to convey how I feel— that I’m blessed in so many ways to have you as my friend.
Will this little rhyme help?

On Valentine's Day we think of those
Who make our lives worthwhile,
Those gracious, friendly people who
We think of with a smile.
I am fortunate to know you,
That's why I want to say,
To a rare and special person:
Happy Valentine's Day!

Valentine’s Day is all about
Special feelings warm and fond,
And friend, I knew right from the start
We had a very special bond.
Our time together is a gift;
You’re interesting and warm and fun!
And when I need to talk and share,
I think of you, friend; you’re the one.
We’re always true and real together.
We have no reason to pretend.
I’m thankful that you’re in my life,
My trusted, cherished Valentine friend.

I hope your Valentine’s Day is great.
I hope it’s quite a treat.
I hope you have a happy day

    While comparing the film’s Strangers on a Train, directed by Alfred Hitchcock and The Spanish Prisoner directed by David Mamet, two suspenseful mysteries unfold. In this essay I will compare both directors use of themes, tones, and camera effects to convey the thrilling story of a confused and tortured protagonist. While they are different plotlines, both stories overlap in many ways. Perhaps Mamet may have even made an homage to Hitchcock’s Strangers on a Train by mirroring various scenes and themes in The Spanish Prisoner.…

    Yet, the Kilgour Family Streetcar was not the only failed transit-stop on the journey to finding the light at the end of the tunnel for Oakley; the light being an efficient, reliable transportation system to serve its residents. Everyday Cincinnati encounters hundreds of commuters, residents, shoppers, and unbeknownst to most, right below all the hustle and bustle rests seven miles of ruined tunnel and six subway stops, America’s longest derelict subway, the Cincinnati Subway. Decades later, the underground tunnels are silent with tracks fading into the shadows, looking as though time is frozen. Stations remain untouched as they anticipate the arrival of commuters that will never disembark. In what once could have been turnstiles, entrances…

    In Suzanne Britt’s essay titled “Neat People vs. Sloppy People,” she is essentially making a comparison between those who are neat freaks and those who are more unorganized. It is clear that she is more on the side of those who are a little less organized. Britt says that “neat people” are selfish and unmotivated. It is clear that she is more in tune with the so called “sloppy people.”…

    Strangers on a Train

    An obvious yet very effective theme in Hitchcock’s Strangers on a Train is that of “criss-cross” and doubles. The list could be endless with mentions of double crossing, and criss-crossing, however each example is very effective and important to the film. One double that truly sticks out is that of Bruno and Guy. “Doubled” together in the film, they constantly are double crossing each other, and yet are completely opposite personalities shown in the film. One could argue that this is shown in the very opening sequence as two pairs of feet approach in the train, and soon “cross” each other (or bump in to each-other) which is lead to the meeting of Guy and Bruno. When leaving the train, after discussing the “perfect murder”, Bruno himself mentions this theme as he is talking with Guy. Bruno explains his idea and then says “For example, your wife, my father. Criss-cross.”…

    The Harlem Renaissance was a turning point for many African Americans. A vast amount of literature was created specifically for this group during this era. For the first time, African Americans were being told that it was okay to be proud of who they were. This new consciousness and self-awareness was prominent in many works of literature, but several writers began exploring the darker side of this movement with literature that concentrated on the negative aspects of race relations in America. Nella Larsen 's novel Passing concentrates on this theme with the story of Clare, a tragic mulatto who "passes" as a white person. Not only is Passing representative of the plight of the tragic mulatto, it is also a novel that explores the complexities of human relationships.…

    The book “Things Fall Apart” by Chinua Achebe has many important sociological perspectives. Many of the characters in the book play important roles in order to create a society. Towards the end of the book, the “white men” begin to move into the village, bringing the religion of Christianity with them. Although the villagers have a current religion that believes in multiple gods, the white men begin to convince people to convert. The Vanishing

    When a foreign film is remade the director tends to change things like the characters, relationships between the characters, organization of the plot, symbols, and the theme to appeal to American audiences. Why is that? Maybe it’s because “[Americans] just haven’t overcome the language barrier” or that “[foreign] films move at a much slower pace than [American movies]” like Fred Hift states in his article “Film – European movies: Looking for an American audience.” Often time’s American film audiences are too inept to understand the meaning of a foreign film or a film in general without everything being laid out in front of them, they also tend to be a little bit ignorant when it comes to other cultures besides their own – which is why foreign films are becoming more Americanized. This is exactly the case in George Sluizer’s French film Spoorloos, directed in 1988, and the American remake he did titled The Vanishing, directed in 1993. When directing the remake George went on to change multiple things in order to make it more American friendly.…

    Social Closure

    Sociologists look at stratification to study the reasons for social divisions in society and their effect. Sociologists speak of stratification as an analytical tool that helps one to understand society and explain the inequalities that arise within it. Class is a social stratum whose members share certain economic, social or cultural characteristics. Sociologists typically use a system of social stratification in the UK based on class. Britain is said to be an open class system meaning that people are able to move up and down class groups the term social mobility is used to describe moving in either direction from your ascribed class, that is the class of your parents. In other societies such as India it can be based on the caste system. This is a closed system because the social mobility I have described is not possible. This is referred to as social closure. Class can be measured objectively by measuring a person’s occupation or subjectively by what class the person perceives themselves to be in. Over the last part of the 20th century there have been many changes in the UK. With the de-industrialisation of Britain and the government policy in the 1980’s to create a property owning democracy sociologists have had to reconsider how to measure class and social mobility.…

    Transient Person

    After reading the last paragraph of the article by Jane Jacobs, I cannot help but thinking which type of person in her description I belong to. Am I the “transient person” who lives in the high-rent tenants and does not take care of the neighborhood? Or, am I the “intervening type of person” who helps to care for the streets and is aware of whether people living around are safe? To my disappointment, I found myself closer to the former type. I have been moving from place to place since I left my hometown. Precisely speaking, I have moved 15 times in the recent 13 years. I don’t pay much attention to the community where I live, as long as it is secure. The article makes me realize that I should change.…

    Human Trafficing

    It is estimated that the yearly profits generated from the industry of human trafficking is $32 billion. When people are trafficked they lose their freedom and are illegally transported across or within countries borders. The U.S. Department of States estimates that 14,500 to 17,500 individuals are trafficked into the U.S. from foreign countries, and over 4 million people are trafficked every year. Human trafficking has become a worldwide problem, which still has not been able to be stopped even with laws or acts that fight against it. There are many factors of human trafficking, like poverty, broken homes, and corruption. Poverty is one of the greatest factors of human trafficking because most poor people have less educational and stable job opportunities. Traffickers play to these faults by telling lies like promising better economic lives. Most American victims are people who are disaffected, running away, or children who are casted away. Official corruption and organized crime are more factors of trafficking, where police officers take bribes to overlook women in sex trades. According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) at least eight organized crime groups are trafficking women (Cullen-DuPont).…
