THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Background of the Study
It is said that education is the catalyst for change. Indeed, it is. Nation building depends on the quality of education that any country has. The capacity of a country to compete and consequently progress in the global arena is dependent on its human resource.
In DMMA College of Southern Philippines for instance, students struggle to succeed in their studies because they are influenced by the socio-economic status of their parents whose monthly income, occupation, education, and place of residence clearly defines them as impoverished or bluntly speaking, below the poverty line. Because of this, it is too common to see students in DMMA College of Southern Philippines taking part time jobs in fast food chains to provide for themselves their basic needs and daily allowance. Though such scenario reflects industry and perseverance on their part of the students, it also takes its toll in the student’s performance in school.

The researchers hope that by establishing a relationship between the Perceived Socio- economic Status and the Level of English Communication Skills of Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management Students of DMMA College of Southern Philippines for School Year 2013-2014, the government as well as private and public organizations can finally realize the need to improve the socioeconomic standing of the Filipinos.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to establish the relationship between the Perceived Socioeconomic Status and the Level of English Communication Skills of the Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management Students of DMMA College of Southern Philippines.
Specifically, it seeks to answer the following questions:
1. What is the Perceived Socio- economic status of the Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management Students of DMMA College of Southern Philippines?
2. What is the level of English Communication Skills of the Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management Students of DMMA College of Southern Philippines?
3. Is there a significant relationship between the Perceived Socio- economic Status and English Communication Skills of the Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management Students of DMMA College of Southern Philippines?

Null Hypothesis
There is no significant relationship between the Perceived Socio- economic Status and The Level of English Communication Skills of the Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management Students of DMMA College of Southern Philippines.

Theoretical Framework This study is anchored on the critical theory of Max Horkheimer which is the school of thought that stresses the reflective assessment and critique of society and culture by applying knowledge from the social science and the humanities. As a term, critical theory has 2 meanings with the different origins one history: first it originated in sociology and the second it originated in literacy criticism, whereby it is used and applied as an umbrella term that can describe a theory founded upon critique: thus, theorist Max Horkheimer described a theory as critical in so far as it seeks “to liberate human beings from the circumstances that enslave them.

Presented above is the Schematic Diagram of the Relationship between Perceived Socio- economic Status and the Level of English Communication Skills of Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management Students of DMMA College of Southern Philippines for School Year 2013-2014. The Independent variables are the perceived socio- economic status of BSHM students and the Dependent variables are the Level of English communication skills of BSHM Students and the Moderator variables are the BSHM students.
Scope and Delimitation
This study is limited only to the relationship between the Perceived Socio- economic Status and the Level of English Communication Skills of the Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management Students of DMMA College of Southern Philippines for School Year 2013-2014.
Significance of the Study
The results of this study will be beneficial to the following: School administration, for them to know the relationship between students’ Perceived Socio-economic Status and the Level of English Communication Skills in BSHM Department. Through the study, the school administration will be able to develop projects and programs that will give importance to the socioeconomic groups whose English communication skills are greatly need improvement. BSHM Faculty, for them to have an idea as to the groups of students that need extensive training when it comes to their Level of English Communication Skills by simply knowing the Perceived Socio-economic Status of students.
Guidance Counselors, for them to understand students more effectively and they could give awareness to the teachers.
BSHM students, for them to strive for their future upon knowing that their Perceived Socio-economic Status has association with the Level of English Communication Skills.
Definition of Terms Perceived Socio-economic Status: The perception of the respondents is about their Socio- economic Status. It is bracketed as follows: poverty level, average level and above poverty level. The Level of English Communication Skills: The scores of the students of DMMA College of Southern Philippines in an English Communication Skills Test that measure the competency of the respondents on the following domains: reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management Students: These are students enrolled in BSHM. DMMA College of Southern Philippines: an Institution of Learning located at Tigatto Road, Buhangin Davao City.

Review of Related Literature
Socioeconomic status (SES) is an economic and sociological combined total measure of a person's work experience and of an individual's or family’s economic and social position in relation to others, based on income, education, and occupation. When analyzing a family’s SES, the household income, earners' education, and occupation are examined, as well as combined income, versus with an individual, when their own attributes are assessed.

English Composition gives all students a framework through which to think critically and move forward successfully in college-level coursework. One of the

Summary, Conclusions and Recommendations

In this chapter, the researchers present the summary, conclusions and recommendations.

Summary This study sought to find out the relationship between the Perceived Socio-economic Status and the Level of English Communication Skills of BSHM students.

Specifically, it seeks to answer the following questions:
1. What is the Perceived Socio- economic status of the Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management Students of DMMA College of Southern Philippines?
2. What is the level of English Communication Skills of the Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management Students of DMMA College of Southern Philippines?
3. Is there a significant relationship between the Perceived Socio- economic Status and the Level of English Communication Skills of the Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management Students of DMMA College of Southern Philippines? The study shows that there is no significant relationship between the Perceived Socio-economic Status and the Level of English Communication Skills of BSHM students. The respondents of the study were the BSHM students of DMMA College of Southern Philippines. Forty (40) selected BSHM students comprised the subject of the study. The responses of the respondents were tallied, tabulated and statistically computed and interpreted to answer the questions posted in the statement of the problem.
The following are the findings of the study:
1. The respondents in the poverty level have High Level of English communication skills.
2. The respondents in the average level have High Level of English communication skills in the category of listening skills, while they have moderate level of English communication skills under the category of speaking, reading and writing skills.
3. The respondents under the above poverty level have High Level of English communication skills in the category of listening, speaking, and writing skills, while they have moderate level of English communication skills under the category of reading skills.
4. The x2 computed value is lesser than the x2 tabular value which leads to the confirmation of the research hypothesis that there is no significant relationship exists between Perceived socio- economic status and the Level of English communication skills of BSHM students.

Conclusion Based on the findings of the study, the following conclusions were drawn.
1. The Perceived socio- economic status of the BSHM students does not affect their Level of English communication skills.
2. There is no significant relationship between socio- economic status and the Level of English communication skills of BSHM students.

Recommendation
From the conclusion, the researcher offers the following recommendations. 1. For the BSHM students to maintain or enhance their English communication skills which is necessary. 2. For the Teacher should to use English language as medium of instruction all the time for students to listen and follow. 3. For the English Instructor to coach the students to improve their English communication skills. 4. For the School Administration to conduct programs that would enhance the English communication skills of both teachers and the students.

Abstract This Thesis is entitled “Perceived Socio- economic Status and the Level of English Communication Skills of BSHM Students of DMMACSP” .The purpose of this study is to know the relationship between perceived socio- economic status and the level of English communication skills of BSHM Students of DMMACSP. This study would be a great help to the students and the instructors, school administration and parents as this study reveals that perceived socio- economic status and the level of English communication skills is very important.
The data and information used in the study were taken from the result of the questionnaire retrieved from the respondents. The researchers used the descriptive method of research because it gives better and deeper understanding of a phenomenon on the basis of an in- depth study of phenomenon.
Based on the conclusion, the Perceived socio- economic status of the BSHM students does not affect their Level of English communication skills and there is no significant relationship between Perceived socio- economic status and English communication skills of BSHM students.
The researchers would highly recommend that the English instructors will assist the BSHM students to improve their English communication skills for the foundation of their career; in addition for the School administration to device a program that would enhance the English communication skills of both teachers and the students.
