Percent Yield Lab
I. Introduction
The Percent Yield lab is designed to further the students’ understanding of percent yield by having them predict how much material will be produced from a reaction; specifically a double replacement reaction. In order to perform the lab, a solid understanding of percent yield is necessary. According to Prentice Hall Chemistry book, percent yield is comprised of two main components. The first is the theoretical yield. The theoretical yield is what is calculated and predicted. It is what is expected to be produced. The second main component is the actual yield. Unlike the theoretical yield, the actual yield is obtained by knowing what is actually produced. With the two main components together, the percent yield can be gained by using the formula: (Actual Yield/Theoretical Yield) x 100. Percent yield comes very useful for many different aspects. By not doing that in the lab, the percent yield was significantly higher than it should have been. Getting exact measurements would hopefully eliminate the problem. Another thing that would change would be to remove the flask as soon as the material inside crystallized. During the experiment, the group did not immediately grab the flask as soon as all the liquids evaporated. This could have somehow harmed the data collected and caused the actual yield results to be altered. Lastly, the group would make sure to stir the acetic acid in the flask for the entire duration of the prescribed time. By just estimating the amount of time stirring, the contents in the flask could have not properly mixed. By using a stopwatch to accurately measure time, the actual yield of the substance could have been greatly
