Percy Meeting A Monster In Mary Shelley's Frankenstein
Meeting a monster is one way how Percy is a hero. Percy is in the museum with Mrs.Dodds and she starts saying strange things to Percy. Suddenly, she shifts into a monster. “She wasn’t human. She was a shriveled hag with bat wings and claws and a mouth full of yellow fangs, and she was about to slice me to ribbons.” (Riordan 12) This supports Percy meeting a monster because the quote says Mrs.Dodds was not human. Then, the quote describes Mrs.Dodds with things monsters have like bat wings and yellow

Despite being disturbed, the Monster in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, was fully aware of his capabilities and his own strength even when ostracised from society. Evidence of this is when Shelley writes “I could, with pleasure, have destroyed the cottage and its inhabitants and glutted myself with their shrieks and misery”. Here, the monster would of indulged himself by murdering the DeLacy family and wouldn’t bare any signs of a guilty conscience. This bares similarity to the story of Prometheus, which was popular in the 1800s, when Frankenstein was first written. Prometheus stole fire from Greek gods to give to man so they could advance in evolution. As punishment for this, he was chained to a mountain and was regularly attacked by animal. He knew that even though the eagle would eat his liver, he was aware of his capabilities and anticipated it would grow back. Furthermore, the phrase, ‘glutted myself’ implies that the monster would of relished seeing the DeLacy family die and scream with horror and pain and presents his disturbed nature perfectly. Moreover, Shelley would of wanted to include this, so the reader began to despise the monster for enjoying such a disgusting crime.…

During the creation scene, the creature is portrayed as a malicious beast by Victor and the reader blindly accepts his perspective because in the reader’s mind, Victor is a human while the Creature is not. As humans, we have a tendency to sympathize with the human Victor as opposed to the non-human Creature. As the story progresses to volume two, Mary Shelley challenges the reader’s perspective by providing a panoramic view of the Creature so the reader can gain a perspective through the Creature’s eyes and thus it allows Shelley to challenge what the reader views as…

In “The Loss of the Creature,” Percy focuses on how one perceives something before actually witnessing it based on the opinions of others. The value of the place or idea is already preconceived due to the fact that we are so caught up in time that we overlook the entire experience as a whole. Or being that we are so focused on the option on an object from someone else, we miss the whole concept or what it’s true meaning or “beauty” as Percy state’s is. We lose the ability to make our own decisions because we base them off of someone else’s viewpoints. Using an example of a movie that I experienced shows Percy’s point.…

In the chapters 4 and 5 from the book “Frankenstein”, explains how he creates the creature and the ideas that lead him to his creation. In the beginning of chapter 4, it made it pretty obvious that Frankenstein was interested in the idea of dead people. For example, Frankenstein stated that “to examine the causes of life, we must first have to recourse to death,”(Shelley 18). This proves to show that Frankenstein was already planning on making his creature apart of death. Another process that Frankenstein used to construct his creature was when he thought about the creature as himself. To further explain, he says that “I should attempt the creation of a being myself,”(Shelley 19). Frankenstein then created the creature with characteristics…

In chapter five of Frankenstein, the image of the weather and the creature before it comes to life creates an exciting, emotional atmosphere the contrasts Victor’s feelings of depression and disgust after the creature comes to life. Victor begins to describe the scene by saying the ¨the rain pattered dismally against the panes”(Shelly 42). Although this trivial detail appears irrelevant to the creation, a small feature like the rain in this instance builds up the anticipation because the detail of the rain seems dilatory and it has us on the edge of our seats waiting for the exciting part. Then when Victor begins to describe the appearance of the creature he says that he, ¨selected his features as beautiful¨ (Shelly 42). Victor appears so excited…

The lens through which readers encounter monsters is often a skewed one. This lens could be that of the author, who seeks to embody a monster as a horrific, non-human entity that will cause havoc in an area. Similarly, this lens could be that of a character in a piece, one who witnesses the monster’s wrath and destruction firsthand and hopes to avoid the cruel savage being. Monster narratives rarely unfold from the perceptive of the monster, and, as such, audiences must rely on other sources as to the monster’s course of action. Such voices can carry a bias with them. As in the case of the author, the omniscient perspective provides descriptions of the monster without directly interacting the monster. This perspective could easily fail to report…
