The Perks of Being a Wallflower

I loved my book, “Perks of Being a Wallflower”, for the following reasons, because of the characters. I love the main character Charlie and his friends. I love the setting. And I love how they ended the book in the hospital. I love the characters because I can relate a lot to Charlie, since he’s a freshman in high school, like me. And how he was scared of High School. In the beginning of the book it said he was very quiet and really shy.in the beginning of the year I was really shy and quiet because I had to make new friends because all my friends went to Shephard High School. But we both had to make new friends because Charlie’s best friend, Michael, committed suicide. So, Charlie overcame that fear of going up to people and met Patrick and his step sister, Sam. Which later in the book and became best friends. “Mary Elizabeth: Charlie, Charlie, what do you think about high school? Charlie: High school? Bull$#!t. The cafeteria is called the Nutrition Center; people wear their leather jackets even when it's 98 degrees out. And why do they give out leather jackets to marching band? It's not a sport. We all know it. Mary Elizabeth: This kid is crazy. Charlie: Mary Elizabeth, I think you're really gonna regret that, you know. Charlie: haircut when you look back at old photographs. I'm really sorry. That sounded like a compliment in my head.” That excerpt was when Charlie went to high school for the first time and his friends asked him, how was his first day of school and he thought high school would be different. That’s how he is throughout the whole book, funny but shy. The setting usually takes place at school, most of the time. “The point, though, is that there is a guy in shop class named “nothing.” I’m not kidding. His name is “nothing.” And he is hilarious. “Nothing” got his name when kids used to tease him in middle school. I think he is a senior now.” (pg. 12) That’s when he met Patrick in shop class. Also, when he beat up the football player that was beating up his best friend Patrick because brad was denying his sexuality but Charlie stop the fight and save Patrick from it. But there is times where he is at home talking about his sister and her boyfriend and his brother and his football. They also added high school parties. After prom, he went to his first high school party. He accidently ate a pot brownie and got high and made lots of new friends. I love everywhere that took place in the book. It really shows the “teenage life.” Charlie threw out the whole book, he has been hospitalized. But the last letter he wrote really closes off of feelings of hope. He hopes he will get out of the hospital soon, seeing Patrick and Sam. Hopes to see his family. He hope his parents will forgive him. He hopes that his aunt will forgive him from all the stuff he said about how it was his fault she died. And how if his birth date wasn’t on Christmas, hopes his aunt would have never died. He hopes that he finds new friends sophomore year, since Sam and Patrick won’t be there because they are going to college. And most importantly, he hopes he will try not be a wallflower. “The hardest part was sitting in the doctor’s office when the doctor told my mom and dad what really happed. I have never seen my mother cry so much. Or my father so angry. Because they didn’t know it was happening when it was.” Charlie before he went to the hospital he took LSD or acid, as they referred it as, and he had been having these symptoms of it. And then he had no control of what he was doing. In one part of the book he said he was completely naked and just watching the TV.

Charlie tends to exclude himself from others, and not socialize with bountiful amounts of people. These two attributes of his personality influence others to believe that he is a trustworthy individual. “Then, he walked up, patted my shoulder, and said, “This is our little secret, okay, champ?” (17). This quotation spoken by Charlie’s father reveals that people seem to trust Charlie due to his personality type. Charlie’s actions also depicted his sense of trustworthiness. “But I would be lying. The truth is that when Patrick dared me, I knew that if I kissed Mary Elizabeth, I would be lying to everyone” (135). In this quotation it is evident that Charlie choses truth over falsity, no matter the consequence. Charlie’s personality characteristics place him in the category of being a wallflower, which forces him to be a truthful…

Charlie started off as a confused boy living in poverty. After Charlie’s fathers passing he was unsure about his role as man of the house. With his mother slowly withering away, and his brother only a baby, he felt he had to take all the responsibility, in order for his family to survive. “…so confused sometimes (he) didn’t know who it was (he) was supposed to be.” He was still at the grieving stage from his father’s passing, and was forced with the expectation of filling his father’s shoes. “Wearing them was easy’ but ‘filling them was a different story altogether.” Throughout this novel, Charlie’s father’s boots are used as a metaphor to link Charlie to his father. “He had given me the boots as I sat for the last time on his bed and listened to the wheeze and crackle in his chest.” Charlie escapes and numbs his pain by running; this is how he later gets involved with Squizzy Taylor. “When I felt the cold dull ache in my bones, I headed out into the dark damp streets of Richmond, and... I ran’. Charlie is doing anything he can to survive at the moment. Survival is the main theme throughout the book. Charlie knew that it was getting to the point where he and his family would be unable to cope. “No. We can’t keep scroungin’ off the neighbours, Charlie. It ain’t right.” For these reasons it is obvious that it would be scarce to find happiness living within people so poor. ‘True, (he) lived in a city that was home to every imaginable evil, but for (Charlie), there was always something else. For (him) there was hope.” As…

My opinion on this book is that it always keeps you on the edge of your seat with many plot twists, and a sad but exiting tone in the story. I hold this opinion because there are many exiting events in the story and you can never expect when they happen. I like how its really intense and calming and also some parts funny. I like how it talks about teen pregnancy because some young teens will want to get pregnant at such a young age and if they read this book it may help them change their mind and wait till they get older, thats very important to me. I really like the chapter where Bobby was talking about the wall when he was trying to get everything back in place and try to see who he really was, i thought that part was really good. I like how it goes back and fourth for the chapters like then and now, it makes you want to read more because in one chapter it tells you really good information and you just want to read even more till the…

For the most part, everything else was the same throughout the short story and movie. Charlie, starting out mentally challenged, had an operation that made him intelligent for a limited period of time. He thus becomes so highly intelligent, he feels disconnected from humanity. In the end of the short story and movie, he has lost all intelligence and becomes dumb again. The rest of the characters mentioned in the short story and movie were all the same. We got more details of the students in the class with Charlie, but everything was the same as in the short story. There were no changes to the personalities. Charlie’s co-workers were still mean and teasing to him before the operation. They would knock him around, make fun of him, and get him in trouble. He never realized this until after the operation. Charlie lived in an apartment near the campus, in the short story and movie. He also got his own lab for research. He did this when he found out what was going on with Algernon and started studying to find a…

The two books I chose to read this marking period were Paper Towns by John Greene and Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky. I'm happy to say that I was very pleased with the books I had chosen, each novel was unique in its own way which kept me reading rather than putting the book down. Both Paper Towns and Perks of being a wallflower deal with the trials of “coming of age”, social Issues in growing up and finding out what kind of person you are inside.…

In the beginning of the film, Charlie struggles with making friends in the first couple of days of his freshman year. Charlie adapts and interacts well with people and is able to make friends easily and quickly. Chbosky portrays this idea in the wide angle shot of the large crowd in the football game, when Charlie approached Patrick and says “Hey Patrick”. "Hey, you're in my shop class”, says Patrick. Eventually Charlie is told to sit next to him and they continue their friendly conversation and with time meets a girl named Sam. From then onwards they made good friends and was later introduced to more people. Chbosky highlights the fact that Charlie becomes easily able to seek a conversation with someone in front of a large crowd, from which then lead to an invitation to his first ever party. At the party Charlie became emotional after realising the fact that he was being noticed and appreciated by the group of his presence. Patrick raised his drink and asked everyone to do the same. “To Charlie” and the whole group said, “To Charlie". Chbosky shows in the wide shot angle of when Charlie was drinking his milkshake and sitting on a lower level than his two other friends, that he has become recognised by the group, being the centre of attention by being himself, he gains the trust of others and is told important secrets compared to his original life. Charlie demonstrates the benefits of being a wallflower…

Even from the beginning you can just tell that the two brothers would go out on a limb for one another and not even think twice about it. The two boys were inseparable. Whether it was playing catch out in their yard or watching the Red Sox on TV. There was even that time when “Charlie pulled out two tickets from the pocket of his jeans jacket. Red Sox Tickets” (Sherwood 9). He had got them just for him and Sam. I can connect to the relationship of Charlie and Sam St. Cloud because I also am the youngest sibling of three. Yes, there are times that we don’t get along, but I can also say that if any of us need a friend or need some help with anything, all of us would say some encouraging words or help them out when needed. Now you might be able to see that yes my sisters and I do fight just like Sam and Charlie, but we would also do anything for each other, just like Charlie and…
