I felt a sharp jab, a pain in the heel of my foot and looked down at it. Protruding from my foot was a pin sporting the headshot of the current goalkeeper of the Atlanta Thrashers. My sister, Melanie, noticed and started to freak out. She screamed and called for my dad in the living room. I was strangely calm about the whole thing, and just stared at the pin in my foot. The sharp end of the pin…
It was a really hot day. The scorching sun in the sky made it almost impossible to play. When we all got out the truck, we went to the field that we were supposed to play on. There was a game on the field. This meant that we got here early. Of course, most people would use that extra time to warm up. But for me, it was completely different. I sat on the bleachers. I was thinking deeply on my moves in order to bypass the defense. BEEP!!!!! The referee has blown the whistle to end the current game. The whistle snapped me out of what I was thinking. It was our turn to…
This was one of the best teams in our league behind West-Genese and Fayetville-Manlius. We started the game off good and quickly jumped up to a 1-0 lead. Our goalie had 5 saves an our defense was holding against their offense very well. Our offense was passing the ball very well and made most of the shots they took. Ending the half the score was 3-1 us. Our coach was very proud of us and let us know that during half-time. Starting the second half off you could tell Cazenovia was upset because they started playing dirty. Then came a turning point of the game. Our goalie made a save and I was running down field to catch the ball. I turned around to catch the ball then as soon as I turned the other way I got hit hard and layed on the field knocked out for a few seconds. Coach Culandra ran out very quickly and told me to stay there while Kelly the trainer ran over. After try looked at me Kelly gave me a concussion test and then I noticed my helmet was shattered. No one ever thought the helmets could shatter like mine did. Kelly took me in and gave me a new helmet which I then used to finish the game off in. Sadly we lost…

The first game of the intramural season had hype behind it because part of the lacrosse team was playing another team full of lacrosse players. We started our warm ups more organized then I thought, when we did lay up lines and practiced pull up jump shots. One thing you should know about me and basketball is I take it extremely seriously. In fact in all sports I’m an intense competitor. The game started off pretty slow, because both teams weren’t shooting very well. We were down 5 to 2 when I hit a 3 pointer to tie the game 5 to 5. The game was intense, due to my lacrosse teammate Kyle Coats had his shooting sleeve on and was laying the ball up like it was no ones business. My team responded to every punch though and with the time running out in the…
Connection is the restorative force by which individuals reaffirm or transform their identities. Ultimately, it is the ability to form meaningful and sustaining relationships that allows individuals to assess and affirm their values. Raimond Gaita’s memoir, “Romulus, My Father” (RMF), Evan Hunters short story “On the Sidewalk Bleeding’ (OTSB), and “The Oasis”, a Shark Island Documentary, explore this notion through employing the universal themes of compassion, alienation and love as they enrich characters sense of hope, significance, comfort and security- fundamental to a sense of belonging, or paradoxically lead to a sense of isolation and exclusion.…
As a defender I’ve learned when the perfect time to attack the ball is. The girl was running onto what we call a “through ball”. It was a fifty, fifty ball. We both came in on the ball hard and fearless. It all happened so fast. We both hit the ball at the same time, my foot on one side and hers on the other. Next thing I knew I was looking at the night sky with the bottom part of my left leg pointed out. Almost as in a “L” shape. The pain hit right away. I remember my reaction was immediately tears. All I wanted to do was try and move it, but I…
I was right at the 5 yard line when the girl on the other team tackle me right to the side line we a got up she patted my shoulder pads and said,” nice run dude you were close but i got you,” all of my team ran to me and were cheering so loud the other team got mad but i did not care it was a home game at the huntley high school. I realized that you should never like celebrate too early or you might not get anywhere and you should all have good sportsmanship to any and any one because you never know what will happen to the person that you did not give the respect to might do. Also it really does not matter if you win or lose what matters is that you have fun i say that because the other team were like mad sad and some were even crying because that could be their last game and disappointed in there self you can just see it in there eyes and their actions they they were kicking the turf and tackling each other because they did not make it to the playoffs i ran over there to break it up and i told them it does not matter if you win or lose what matters is that you have fun and they said,” yay that's what it's really about thanks,’’ and i ran back to my team and i broke us…
you're running the ball, 5 yards away from your 10th touchdown in 5 games. Boom, the defender takes you out, you go flying in the air with your helmet flying off, and you have no protection from the ground and your head. When you land, you twist your head and you hear a loud crack at the moment of impact, almost breaking your neck and smashing your head wide open. everyone in the crowd grows silent, You stay down for 10 minutes, feeling nothing but sharp, stabbing, burning pain in your head and your neck, soon the pain travels to the rest of your body. then, when you think it can’t get any worse, your whole body, from head to toe, has that sharp burning pain. finally your head starts spewing out blood. Then the thought…

As a cheerleader, I took part in a high energy and enthusiasm activity, yet I craved more. “More” just so happened to be flag football. The summer before I entered the first grade I asked my parents if I could make the transition. My request was met with emotions including concern, intrigue, but most of all, support. My parents were not going to dissuade me from participating in any hobby, especially one I seemed so interested in pursuing. I showed up to the first practice with my curly, blonde hair pulled back in a tight ponytail. I was enthusiastic to learn and participate in the sport over which my whole family went ballistic each Sunday night in the dead of winter. Upon my much awaited arrival, the coach's wife asked what number I wanted to have on the back of my extra-small jersey. I thought ‘one’ was the…
Belonging encases the intrinsic human experience through which individuals strive towards various affiliations within their microcosm of social dealings. An individual’s ability to attain belonging is heavily reliant on their prowess to develop relationships with others and their surrounding landscape. This dichotomy of belonging and not belonging is explored by the 1975 Peter Skrzynecki poem Feliks Skrzynecki and the 1998 memoir Romulus My Father by Raimond Gaita which utilise techniques such as narration and metaphors to accentuate the experiences of belonging and not belonging within their respective protagonists.…
The ball fell into the hands of my teammate. First quarter flashes by. The game had been back and forth. Second quarter rolls around. There is six minutes and 12 seconds on the clock. I was standing at half court. One of the Todd County girls was taking the ball out, and we pulled our press on. She over throws the ball and it comes directly to me. All I could think was it is a fast break, so I need to push the ball up the court. I start dribbling the basketball. I could barely here the ball bouncing and out of nowhere I hear a teammate yelling my name. I look over and her girl had been screened, so she was wide open. I immediately quit dribbling and I plant my left foot in front of my right and I twist to my left to pass the ball to her. I felt something funny pinch in my knee, and I instantly fell down. The ball never reached my teammate, and it was picked up from an opposing player. I tried to get up, because I knew I had to rush down there to play defense. As I put all my weight on my right knee tears started to stream, and I realized I could not get up. The ref called a timeout, and Mr. Aaker walked out to…
Belonging can come in very many forms. Belonging can come from people, places, groups, communities and the larger world. Through this nourishment of belonging a sense of understanding arises and when the choice is made to prevent belonging a sense of not belonging is established. This is illustrated by Peter Skrzynecki’s poetry from the Immigrant Chronicles, Neighbours by Tim Winton.…
