Personal Essay: Life After The Vietnam War
My grandmother says, “Nothing more sweet and delicious than fried rolls during a time like this.” She smiled as she stared at me. Despise her expression, the smile that she gave me chill down my spine as something about to happen. Yes, it was the same type of old story that she told me again and again for the past five months, but this one was different.
As far as I know, my grandmother and my grandfather lived happily after the Vietnam War, but I had never heard such experience like this. The war was a dark history for my grandparents, my dad, and my aunts and uncles; they had to suffer the lack of food and insecure for their safety for years, yet they also had to work hard to repair everything that got destroyed every time the communist

While she smoothly prepared the ingredients for the next steps, she began to share about her past and why this foods had such significance to her. She recalled her past as she says, " This story is rather a sad memory about our dark past which related to this meal." Not much interest, I kept messing the stuff on the table. My grandmother noticed it, so she raised her voice a bit to get my attention back in, "Back then, foods were not as common as now. We often scavenging for foods like potatoes and cassarvas, while meat was very rare and expensive. Foods like fried rolls were very valuable and only use in special occasion like ancestors day or festival days. Despise the tension of the war, they still joined together and celebrated them as much as they can." "Fried rolls was one of the few foods that we could afford and easiest to prepare. It was everyone's favorites. The joyments in everyone's face despite the war and our losts shared a great memory in my heart." The Vietnam War had different effects on many people. It affected people at home and obviously greatly affected those who were fighting in Vietnam. An excerpt from Everything We Had by Al Santoli and Beginning and Arrival, excerpts from If I Die in a Combat Zone: Box Me Up and Send Me Home by Tim O’Brien, are memoirs that explore the effects and influences of war on two young men. Tim O’Brien wrote about his own experiences in the war, and in the piece of work by Santoli, he tells about the events of a soldier named Robert Santos. These men are quickly shaped and molded by the war and the people there.…

This is a reoccurring theme throughout the book. The Vietnam war was a war that almost everyone involved had a very hard time moving on from it if they even did at all. O’Brien does a great job showing the war as something that eats away at its participants for years, even lifetimes, after. He even tells of how he goes back to Vietnam with his daughter and still thinks all of the same thoughts he thought of twenty years ago when he was there last. Most of the soldiers agree that their lives were forever changed from the war. Nothing seemed the same when they returned home. War completely took over their lives while they were there so it makes sense that their thoughts and feelings would transfer over to their post-war lives. This war changed all of the characters in this book. Not all for the better, but everyone is…

Upon their return from the Vietnam War, many veterans were shocked upon the reaction (or lack thereof) displayed by the citizens of the States who had remained on the home front. When finally landing back on American soil, many veterans expected to be greeted with celebration and maybe even a parade, acknowledging their service and dedication to the Vietnam cause. However, veterans were instead greeted by protestors who did not agree with the United States’ participation in the war (ironically, not all veterans wholly supported the cause itself, but instead went out of respect and devotion to their country).…

The next morning, I was to report to Logistics and Strategy. People were all over this place. Seaman lined the walls with headsets on and screens in front of them. They used their fingers to tap the screens and then shout out coordinates. I walked down the row of officers scrutinizing interactive pixel maps. They had the ability to visualize the ships and planes in real time with holographic symbols. I passed them and walked up some steps to a clear glass room. TOO THIN, Fernando, Chad, Mallory, and five Admirals were there. One Admiral for each permanent coalition country. There were also a line of officers outside the room, waiting for orders.…

The two texts that are associated with emotion in the anthology are both poems, Grandpa's Soup by Jackie Kay and The Coming of Yams and Mangoes and Mountain Honey by James Berry. Grandpa's Soup is about Kay recalling her own childhood memories of spending time with her grandfather in Scotland, this is similar to The Coming of Yams and Mangoes and Mountain Honey in the respect that Berry is also recalling childhood memories by remembering his homeland in the Caribbean. The two poems are evidently connected by memories and the fondness in which they are remembered, which reveals that both protagonists have an emotional link to food.…

When you are someone’s support system you take on multiple roles that indirectly deteriorate your self preservation. Being a listener or a shoulder to cry on, requires sacrifices that, in the moment, you do not even recognize as imposing. Voluntarily and willingly being there for someone begins with the unwavering doubt that you and your own problems cannot and will not prevail over your person’s immediate crisis. Depending on the duration of your duty, a somewhat selfish thought of inconvenience is bound to surface. But, that wave of retraction is almost always combatted by a riptide of dedication and loyalty that brings you back to sea, where all you can do is tread. In turn, the suppression of self regarding issues regularly comes with a layer of obligation and a sting of bitterness.…

Separated by society from experience. Leaving as a boy, changing into a soldier, returning as a man, who has seen and experienced more than words can explain or understand. Some by force, others by choice, yet all who were there understand and relate to one another through a bond that not one else can begin to comprehend. The war in Vietnam is one of the most controversial wars in American history, because the morals and purpose for American intervention will always be questioned, left to interpretation or assumption. Every person has the right to their own thoughts but the only ones who have the truth on what happened in Vietnam were those who experienced it, fought in it, and served in it.…

As soon as I had my eyes wide open, I jumped out of my bed and ran over to my sister’s bed to wake her up. “TODAY’S THE DAY, JANA!!!!!!! IT’S FINALY EID!!!” I screamed at the top of my lungs. Yet she didn’t wake up. “C’MON JANA! WAKE UP AND BE EXCITED WITH ME!” I continued. She woke up and jumped out of bed the way I had. She ran over to my mom, asking her to take out the brand new dress from the closet in her room. My mom said: “Not now, Jana. We don’t have to be at your grandmother’s house till 9:30.” This surprised me. I looked over to the big round clock to see what time it was. We had 3 hours till we had to be there. I couldn’t wait to taste my grandma’s sweet, cheesy Kanafe that she makes every Eid.…
