Essay #1: Family History
It all started on a very hot windy summer in 1985, as I was walking home from school on a Thursday afternoon. I was speed walking trying to get home as quick as possible because the weather was unforgivingly hot, when I accidentally tripped on a rock on the sidewalk. I fell on my hands and knees while all my school papers started flying all over the place. I got up quickly, trying to grab all my homework and school notes but the wind wasn't letting up. As I was picking up the papers from the floor I heard a voice say," Mmm, nice work Valentina." Startled, I immediately looked up and saw a handsome young man holding some of my papers in his hands

I knew he was the guy I wanted to spend the rest of my life with . I remember it was a very hot summer in 1989, when called me to invite me to a party and asked me to look as beautiful as possible . I had no idea what he had planned. When he picked me up he gave me gorgeous white roses like he had done on our first date. He then mentioned that there had been a change of plans and that we were going to have dinner instead. After dinner, we went and got ourselves delicious strawberry ice-cream cones. I hadn't noticed that were doing the exact same thing, as the day he asked me to be his girlfriend. It was like having our first date all over again, but even more special than the first we had a few years back. When we arrived to my house we stayed in his truck talking about everything and anything. He gave me a serious look and said, "I stole something from you". I gave him a confused look when I saw him reaching into the backseat and grab the same old jewelry box he had given me. I started to laugh and asked, "why you did you take it?" He just sent a grin my way and said, "Open it". As I opened the box I felt my heart beating faster and faster, and my hands started to sweat. At that moment I saw a paper in there that read, " Would you do me the honor of becoming my wife and give me the pleasure of making you happy for the rest of our life?". I felt as my tears cascaded down my cheeks, I was beyond happy, surprised and speechless all at once. I looked at him and let out a sob and reached over the console and hugged him. "Yes, yes, yes I want to be with you forever, I love you," I cried as he pulled out a beautiful ring and put it on my left hand where my fourth finger meets my

The phrase to “set himself free” is used a lot throughout a bridge to Wiseman’s cove, whether it is to do with family issues or just common everyday tasks. Carl is constantly trying to let himself free and sometimes succeeds but other times doesn’t. Some examples are that if he’ll see his mother or every stop looking after his little brother Harley. Throughout “A bridge Wisemans cove” he goes through a mental journey facing evil family member (usually Beryl) and friends.…

On September 8th 1990, it was a hot sunny day in the city of Cali, Colombia. Temperature around 88°F with very low humidity, normal for that time of year, since the summer was about to begin. A sky full of altocumulus clouds cooled the estimated population of about 1.7 million people ("1990 population estimate for Cali, Colombia."). Among that population there was my mother. Already late for her gynecology appointment, inconveniently causes by a car accident, she would shortly find out when I would be entering the world. The accident turned a 20-minute drive in a 45-minute drive. Rushing into the clinic, as the doctor’s assistant was calling her name, she rapidly was taken to the back to speak with the provider. When the doctor came into the room he calmly said, “I have good news, and bad news”. My mom’s heart already racing she decided to go with the bad news first. “The probability of being a complicated birth is pretty high, which means the surgical team will have to perform a cesarean section instead of a vaginal birth”. My mother relived thinking it would be something much worse she asked the doctor to go ahead with the good news. “The baby will probably be arriving today”. My mom became frantic, “that’s the good news? They might as well both have been bad! My mother panicked, she had nothing ready for the birth, since her first child was not due for another 10 days. Her hormone levels raging at an all time sky high, she shortly began to cry. The doctor and his staff hugged her and reassured her that everything was going to be ok. They quickly rushed her to the hospital where they would have all the equipment in the event that there were any major complications. Once she was all settled in, the operating room staff started to prepare for the birth around 3:15 P.M. The staff thought I was ready to come out, however I took another three hours to make my grand appearance. At 6:23 PM I arrived spreading my arms and legs with a…

Since I grew up in a family with an abusive father, my response to conflict differs from most people. My father resolved conflict by shouting, degrading, and often physically abusing the other person. My mother’s response to conflict was to try to settle a compromise or walk away until her own frustration was no longer there. I think based off the conflict responses I observed growing up, my responses are a mixture of my parents. When in an intense argument with someone, I attack their character and then silence them out. Family members play a big part in how we resolve conflicts, because a good portion of our lives begin by us spending time with and watching our relatives. We, as a society, adapt skills and mannerisms from those closest to…

My mother’s parents would always share stories with us about how their parents came to America from Italy and Germany. They would bring out old photo albums and tell us all about how different life was for them and how they held on to family cooking recipes and every Christmas we make the same dishes that their parents would make. My father’s parents would also share stories about Ireland and my grandpa would talk about what he experienced when he was in the war. Unlike the family I interviewed, I was brought up in a Christian household. Every Sunday the whole family would attend church together and then go out to eat after to talk about what we had learned. We would also pray every night before bed and were always told to give thanks throughout the day for the life we have been blessed with.…

I come from a family of immigrants who came here for a better living standard unfortunately, while growing up I witnessed money problems in the household. They had to work long hours and I struggled to focus on my own potential. My parents couldn’t spend much time with me and my siblings dealing with our own problems especially in school. As a result, I had a lack of confidence because I wasn’t at the same level as the rest of other kids and struggled doing well in school. I hate to say I didn’t have a strong role model because even though my father was around, he was always worried about other things and once in awhile he would spend time with me. I started not to take school seriously and become more rebellious and would always get complaints…

Beside my Jewry box laid a letter from my dad and a set of wedding rings. The letter just said at simple I love you. At that moment in my life I wish I could have believed him. After I read the letter my brother and I sat and talked or at least tried. After all the man that was my hero had walked out on my family for another woman.…

The following day, he called me and we talked for hours. I fell in love with his sweet and beautiful voice instantly. We continued conversing over the phone for about four months before deciding to go out somewhere together. We arranged to meet at the Kaw Yam Mu Poe lay Park near the river. After meeting up, we talked endlessly for what seemed like hours until we had nothing more to say. We sat in silence and stared at the water. I still remember the past in the friend’s birthday party. He took my hand and looked me in the eyes and asked me if I would be willing to give my heart to him. I was completely stunned at the question. I knew I loved him and wanted to be with him, but I was too nervous, and I have never had love before. I don’t understand much about love and I felt that I'm not ready for love yet. Hence, I said honestly, "I'm not ready." His face of happiness turned to sadness and he stopped talking. He dropped my hand from his and…

My day started like any other day at work. I was dreading coming in as it was a beautiful spring day. I was running late as usual so I came in the back door. As soon as I clocked it my friend and coworker said there is someone I want you to meet. I reluctantly went out to the front porch of my facility, and there he was. I didn’t know it then, but I met the man that would change my life forever.…
