Personal Essay On My Trip To America
On my trip to Myanmar I learned how to cherish my life here in the United States and to strive to reach my full potential in school. My parents, originally from Myanmar, have always encouraged me to strive for a career in medicine since becoming a doctor in my country was an admirable and reputable job. My parents were as strict as stereotypical foreign parents could be. They believed that education was very crucial in life. They would also flood my ears with their endless childhood stories, trying to repeatedly tell me that I am more fortunate than them since I grew up here in the United States and have have access to an immense amount of resources. I sprouted into a fine student academically and placed nationally, in track and field when I broke my first National Record on the vault bar in third grade and received high recognition from the Burmese community by being the first person to break a National Record from Myanmar. I began to diminish academically at the start of seventh grade. Some could say it was my initial bout with Senioritis, a made up disease characterized by a decline in performance at school, however my trip back to Myanmar was the first step into changing …show more content…
My family and I stayed in the bustling capital of Yangon till it was time to visit Chin State, the most impoverished section in Myanmar, and also where my parents were born and raised. There are more than seventy five dialects in our country, which divided the once united Chin State into smaller villages that housed their own culture and language. My parents were from two different villages which has now allowed me to speak four languages fluently. As we made our way to Chin State, the quality of transportation began to deteriorate, as well as the quality of the roads that we traveled on. Initially we were being transported by bus and when we arrived to Chin State, we were on mere scooters that hardly got us

I am not your traditional medical school applicant. I do not have a 4.0 at a fancy big U nor have I helped helpless African children fight malaria, which is a goal of mine, but I digress. I did not make the best choices when I was younger and did not realize my full potential until the age of 21. I attended a semester at a party school when I was 18 and convinced myself school was not for me, when in fact, it was just an excuse to coast by. I never challenged myself at the awkward age 16-20 years old. I waited tables, worked in a warehouse, and did part time labor-intensive work to pay the rent and bills. I did enough just enough to get by. However, when I was 20, everything came into perspective. I was at a party having a great time with my best friend; I was in Louisiana at the time and as they say, “laissez les bon temps rouler”, translated, let the good times roll. That quickly changed. My best friend had a 5-minute long seizure, as everyone looked dumbfounded around him; I quickly took action, put him on his side and called 911. After a couple hours in the waiting room, two doctors…

I love the way you explained how people celebrated 4th of July in America. It definitely gave us a sense of patriotism and national pride. America have gone a long way. Traditionally, it's to celebrate Independence Day with American flags, red-white-blue, and that whole game. Nowadays, from my perspective, there are some patriotic people. However, for me while growing up, it's more BBQ, pool parties, fireworks, and most importantly red-white-blue & American flags. That's still somewhat patriotic and bring people together as you said, communal celebration. Those celebrations only happen in few times annually and truly united as together and helps us remember that America definitely have gone a long way.…

I had finally been given the opportunity to continue my higher education at an American institution. I knew that this was the chance I had been waiting for: the chance to study dentistry in a country where oral hygiene is incredibly important. However, there were several hurdles along the way I needed to overcome. Initially, I was completely unaware of how the American education system operated. My poor background in the English language made it even harder to overcome this obstacle. To add to this stress, my father was diagnosed with acute arthritis in his neck; a cervical spine fusion in C6 and C7 was pinching the nerve in his right arm, which was causing it to go numb. He wasn’t able to work and went through an extensive amount of painful physical therapy. The circumstances made it harder for me to focus on my dreams. Unfortunately, I had to work fulltime while I was still a fulltime student in college, which was detrimental to my grades. However, I worked even harder and by the time I was a junior in college, I was maintaining dean’s list as a full time student, while working…

Let me start off with my mother's journey to America. It was 1985 when her parents decided it was time for a fresh start. It was very difficult to come to America legally, so they made their journey by traveling to other countries. They left Cuba and traveled to Spain where my grandfather found a job as a farmer. They lived in Spain for almost 2 years before they gathered enough resources to travel to Mexico. The journey from Mexico to the USA was very easy for them because they had a family member who knew their way around. They struggled for many years in America but soon became legal citizens. My mother later on went to college and completed her bachelor's degree in accounting from the University of Miami. My grandparents purchased the…

Every year a large amount of children and women take on the challenge of traveling to the United States, some legally, some illegally. Considering the risks women and children take everyday living in Central America, coming the the United States is a very big opportunity and uncertainty they are willing to take. It does not surprise me that an immense amount of people make the trip to America because of the positive possibilities mothers are given when arriving, especially when they come to make money to support loved ones they left behind. Although this decision is not surprising and is well understood, i do not agree with this choice that is made.…

One day nearly two years ago, I came back from the worst trip and experience ever in my life. Three years ago, my family made the biggest decision of our lifetime together and we had decided to move. Now the fact that we were moving didn’t bother me or my little sister, it was just the simple fact that we were moving from our home that we had grown up in our entire life. The only problem was the fact that we had eventually found out that we were going to move to Oregon. This Alabama home that we grew up in was very special to me and my sister but it wasn’t the one of best of places. We had lived right beside our grandparents and we loved to go up the hill and see them and us moving had rendered that possibility from happening any longer.…

People often say things about how the United States, with its revolutionary political and economic system, must have been around for a long time in order to achieve the world standing it holds today. This isn’t the case though. In fact, when compared to great civilizations like the Roman Empire which lasted almost 12 centuries, many would say that the United States is still in its infancy. Much in the same way, the political and economic systems the U.S. is famous for are seen to be derived from past civilizations as well. But this of course leads us to asking the inevitable questions of where did it all begin, and what caused people to settle here in America of all places. In order to answer this however, we have to look back past explorers and crusades. Past the kings, uprisings, revolts, and trade routes. We must go back in time to the Roman Empire itself, specifically in the year 476 BCE; the time when everything was falling apart in Rome.…
