Personal Essay - Reading and Writing
Lacking experience in writing and reading, English is my most feared subject. It is the one and only vulnerable spot in my otherwise invincible academic armor. I hate writing and I despise reading. Other than magazines, I cannot recall reading anything since "The Crucible" which was a teacher assigned book in my sophomore high school English class. Not that I read a lot before that, I don't remember reading any books in my middle school years neither. Now, with this writing assignment since a long time, my brain feels like an old rusty engine of an 81 Porsche cranking up for the first time in years, readying to compete in the English 1A heat.

My parents and my favorite math teacher always told me that I'm a very bright individual and my accomplishments in other subjects prove that. I approached and conquered the subjects of math, science, and history like a paladin in gold, yet faced with writing, I would coward in fear. To me, writing equals to nothing more than stress and frustration. A useless hassle and senseless boredom which I thought was too stupid to waste effort on. Therefore I have shied away from this department for as long as I can remember and focused all my energy toward the areas I have strength and faith in.

The writing compartment in my brain is very restricted. I lack flexibility in the use of words and phrases. A typical sentence of mine, starts with "I", "It", "Because", "The", "But", "Therefore". It is extremely difficult for me to think of new ways to begin sentences or use sophisticated sentence patterns which I see in other people's essays. But when it comes to grammar, I am extremely proud because there are usually no corrections on the essays my teachers hand back, or maybe it's because they're too lazy to correct them.

When I'm actually writing, I write as fast as a turtle can crawl. A 2 page essay usually takes me around 6 hours to finish. My teacher once told me to use a process called brainstorming which I tried

The five steps of the writing process are equally vital to the succession of any writing assignment, whether it is for work or school. The five stages include PREWRITING, PLANNING, DRAFTING, REVISING, and PROOFREADING. As our text (Arlov, 2014), explains, “Writing is not a single act, but a process composed of several steps,” (p. 3). Moreover, constructing a strong paper that is well-written (no matter how tedious it seems), requires efficaciously executing all five phases. It is crucial not to take shortcuts by eluding any step of the writing process.…

Over the course of the past three months, I have had the distinct pleasure of testing my writing capabilities through the Introduction to College Writing course. I have always had a passion for writing in all forms, but in previous years, the course work in grade-level English classes have been unchallenging of my writing ability. I have been heavily involved in Bonneville High School’s newspaper through journalism since my freshman year. This allowed me to strengthen my writing capability as I was drafting throughout the entire school year. I have never truly had to apply myself until I enrolled in English 101. Since the beginning of the class, I have faced various hardships while writing essays in unfamiliar styles, such as drafting a response to a scholarly article and synthesizing opposing perspectives. I have learned that I am more than capable in writing in different styles and that all of my work will be quality content regardless of the topic. I overcame the obstacles that have challenged me, and my essays exhibit that I am fully prepared to continue my work in English 102.…

Our first essay of Freshman Composition was to write a narrative about something that impacted our lives. I didn’t really know what to expect from this assignment. I knew I could write about my car wreck and give precise details about every little moment. When I started writing, I created a mind map to organize all the details. However, I was worried about my writing skills. I didn’t know what my instructor was expecting from me in this paper. I have never been a strong writer and that really concerned me when it came time to receive a grade. When I turned in the assignment I knew I had a strong detailed and easy to imagine story. However, I knew I was weak with my word choices and grammar. Grammar is the biggest thing that drags me down when I write papers for important classes even though I know my information. Because I knew that before going to write this paper, I looked for resources to help me. I found a website that points out your grammar and spelling mistakes for free. I know you can’t rely on the internet so I would read over it on different days to see if I found something new to correct. This helped in the end because I got a good grade on the paper and did well on grammar.…

When I was younger, I hated my brother. I hated him so much that I would begin to sob when he simply walked into my room. He was such a bully to me. I remember complaining, and people always telling me that one day we would be best friends. Of course I never believed that for a second… until we started growing up. By my eighth grade year I considered him my best friend. My brother, Jacob, is eighteen months older than me and always seemed to know everything about everything. He was in all the top classes with all the best grades. Not only was he extremely book smart, but he always had the best life advice, whether it had to do with friends, boys, or even parent struggles. I approached him with everything I needed to know about life. He was my confidant. He was the only one I knew who would always be there for me, and always love me no matter what.…

My academic experience of writing has mainly consisted of the core writing classes that were required for high school. In high school, I wrote persuasive essays, poems, research papers and expository papers. Writing in school was a difficult task for me to do as writing a paper over a topic that does not intrigue me makes brainstorming and getting started difficult. Throughout high school writing papers became easier as I worked on my weaknesses. The type of writing I found the most enjoyable was writing deep thoughts or ideas that made me ponder. Then making those thoughts more presentable and well articulated over the next few days. My weakness when I write is correct grammar, deciding what to write, and brainstorming in a way that keeps…

Writing is always difficult and takes a long time, this is my first impression about any writing class. Not only because of its techniques, but also the language was a big obstacle. I don’t see myself as a good writer and writing for me is just a required task I have to get it done. I moved to the United States three years ago. I have taken English as a first foreign language in my Egyptian school beside Arabic --my native language--. When I moved here and started school, I placed in an ESL class for a quarter and then moved to regular English classes after that. When I start the writing courses here at UCI, I wasn’t happy about my placement. After, I was taking a regular English classes in high school, I placed in AC English 20C/D. I wished that I had gotten placed in a more advanced writing course. But after finishing these academic courses, I can admit that my enrollment was not a waste and it was the right choice. During these courses, I have improved in many different areas. Doing the essay in three drafts required me to go over and reconsider my essay…

On Friday October 30, 1987 at Moss Regional Hospital I was born Dana Elaine Gradney to Paul and Rosa Gradney in Lake Charles, Louisiana. I have three older siblings Latreza, Paulrika, and Paul II who came and seen me for the first time before going trick or treating. Once me and my mother was discharged from the hospital my daddy brought us home where we lived in Mossville, Louisiana till the age of two and then my family moved us to Zion, Illinois. In Illinois we were closer to my father’s older siblings I stayed home with my mother while my father worked and my siblings went to school. I have little memory of wearing a snow suit and playing outside with my siblings on Christmas when my brother shot his toy gun piece and it went in the fireplace. Two years later My mother was accepted into nursing school back home so we moved back to Louisiana. I then started Pre-K at Wonderland of Play where I am still friends with three of my fellow classmates today. I then started Kindergarten at Westwood Elementary in Westlake, Louisiana till the fifth grade along with playing softball and school clubs throughout the years. I had many friends’ great memories of sleepovers with family. I remember my parents waking us up saying they heard the reindeers on the roof. They use to trade boxes on our gifts so we would think it was something we didn’t ask Santa for. On my 8th birthday I met my cousin Larissa Tanner for the first time and we became best friends instantly. In 1996 my oldest sister became pregnant with my first niece. On July 8, 1997 Torreyan Kia-Latrece Gradney was born my first niece and my parents first grandchild. In 1998 I moved to Houston, Texas because my mother accepted a better nursing position. I started school at Wilson Intermediate where I met new friends, joined school clubs, had my first boyfriend, and tried out for cheerleading for the first time. My cousin came to Texas every…

During this pass September of 2016, a traumatic event unfold before my very eyes. I was visiting my aunt’s house because I feel home sick. Honestly, I feel like family sick; my aunt is like another mother to me. I spent the weekend there in North Miami, and I just finished saying my goodbyes to my cousin. As I am walking down the street to the bus stop, I was digging through my pocket for my headphones. An accident happened right in front of my house. Two cars going the opposite direction end up in front of my house. The accident caused one of the cars turned to fast, instead of waiting, and hit the other car directly. The speed of the collision cause the car flip over one side; the other car block the two way and was damaged in the front. My cousin ran out the house to see if I was okay. The accident happened literally two minutes after I walked out the house. People from around the neighborhood began surround the flipped car.
