Personal Ethical Position
The late American Politician Alexander Hamilton once said, “He who stands for nothing will fall for anything” (Goodreads, 2013). I stand for opportunity. Each student is a unique individual who requires a secure, caring, and stimulating atmosphere in which to grow and mature emotionally, intellectually, physically, and socially. It is my responsibility as a school counselor to aid students in conquering their fullest potential in these areas by providing an environment that is safe, supportive, honest, trusting, and invites a sharing of ideas and feelings. …show more content…
Professionalism should be shown through my sessions with my students and in my actions. My role as a school counselor is to guide, provide access to strategies, techniques, and resources as well as open their minds to new ways of thinking no matter the issue or topic being discussed. During each session, confidentiality is the number one priority. From day one, I want to ensure my students that they can trust me with their feelings and thoughts no matter what it is. However, I will also make sure that they are aware that I have to discuss our conversation with someone else if the subject matter being discussed will do harm to themselves and/or others, appears abusive, and/or I am summons by the court. Getting attached is easily done when you have a loving heart that strives to fix everyone’s frown into a smile. I will have to learn that as long as I give a 150% effort to each child’s situation, I have done my job. In closing, one of these days in my upcoming counseling career, I hope to hear at least one of my students say, ‘Because of Miss.
