Personal iHealth Literacy What drew me to enroll into the medical coding program is the fact that I find the health care world to be fascinating. I started my career in the legal field and dealt with worker’s compensation and tort cases which involved getting the medical records of the clients and reviewing them to make sure we received the medical records that pertained to the accident or injury. When my legal career ended, due to the lawyer I worked for becoming the Mayor of Haverhill, I found employment in the health care field, and I have been in the health care field for six years. I started out as a Care Team Coordinator, which is a position that deals with the scheduling for the clinicians, running reports to track paperwork, etc.

While reviewing these charts, I became interested in the medical coding that I would read on the plan of care. Since I have not had any job satisfaction since I was downsized, I felt it was time to take a step to get myself into a position that is more fulfilling than the one I have now. I have talked with people I work with about medical coding, and they suggested I look into it as they felt it would be a good fit for me. I like a job that is challenging, makes me think, and work hard. Becoming a medical coder is a position I feel that will be challenging because it will make me think, and it is also a job which, I would say, consists of doing investigative work as you are looking into a book to find the most accurate code you need in order to tell the “story” of the patient’s diagnosis and services rendered. After speaking with co-workers I read up on the courses that Northern Essex iHealth, I decided to enroll in the medical coding program. Once I complete my courses and my internship, I will have my certificate. I will continue my education to learn about all the specialty coding in order to further my career goals. There will be more jobs for medical coders as there are medical coders who have been using ICD-9 and do not want to learn the new ICD-10 because the ICD-10 coding is going to be more in depth and there are going to be thousands of new
