Growing up, the job title “lifeguarding” said it all to me. Swimming pools and aquatic attractions were always the most fun places to go with the family. When I was in second grade I learned that I loved competing with people and being good at things. I joined a gymnastics gym near my house in second grade when i was 9, and started competing when i was 10. My mom told me that I have to do well in school if I was going to be focused on a sport along with school, or she would take me out of gymnastics. Soon enough, I wasn’t doing so well in social studies and comm skills. I was scared my mom would make me quit, But I worked as hard as I could so get back up there. A lifeguard, Mike, was working a night shift one night in Orange County, California at Newport Beach, observed a boy and a girl that were out swimming near a danger zone, as Mike was going towards then to inform them that was not a safe spot for them to be, a rip swept them away before Mike could get to them. Being a lifeguard lead me to find my interest in Medicine. Over the past three summers, I have been the head lifeguard at a community neighborhood. Like becoming a Doctor, there is lots of work and practice that goes into being capable of rescuing a life. I went through hours and hours of training workshops and CPR training classes in order to get my lifeguard certification. At the end, the only thing that makes all the training and exhaustion worth it is when you are able to successfully put yours skills to the test. There are many reasons that I might want to be a lifeguard: my paycheck would increase, I could get a job in practically any community, and I could spend my days outside in the sun. None of these, however, are the reason I want to be a lifeguard. The real reason I want to become a lifeguard is because it would allow me to better as both a person and as a pool employee. When the sky is blue, the humidity is high, and the weather finally reaches around 80°, it usually means it’s time to hit the beach. Moms bring floaties for their kids and beach chairs for themselves in order to sit in the sun and get a good tan. All children at one time or another wanted to try something new. When I was about six years old, I was that child. My mother had just started introducing me to sports a year before that, and that summer I was supposed to go to a tennis summer camp. For most of my summer’s during college, I worked at a Girl Scout camp as a lifeguard. It was one of my favorite jobs I ever, but sometimes it was also difficult. During my second summer, I received feedback from the Head Lifeguard, Hank, that challenged me as a lifeguard and personally. Every day, I delivered waterfront rules to the campers that came down to swim. Providing the rules and ensuring the campers understood them made sure that the campers stayed safe and that my fellow lifeguards and I would not need to use our training to save them. But since the groups were composed of young girls from grade school to high school, there was always lots of background chatter while rules were being given. This frustrated me. Moreover, I regularly attend extra-curriculum activities such as hockey, English and business studies.
