Personal Management Philosophy
“My Personal Management Philosophy Paper”
One’s personality determines their management style. I am a down to earth, likes to have fun sometimes, but at work keep it professional kind of girl. I also believe that employees work better in a non-stressful and safe environment. The way I behave as a manager will reflect on my employees.
For instance, at my last job, my boss was bipolar. Coming into the office from one day to the next was different every time. This was very stressful. Our department file numbers directly reflected her moods. On days when she was in a good mood, and socialized with everyone, we had good numbers; however, when she was in a bad mood, our numbers were not so great. Which would make her even more mad and she would actually yell at us, even using profanity sometimes. To me this behavior as a manager is never okay.
Total Quality Management would be my style of management. I believe that when you put an emphasis on teamwork, empower employees, and have organization-wide recognition, your employees will like their jobs and want to strive to do their best. I would work my team based on empowerment, trust, and cooperation.
I would use the self-management process to get started. In my line of work, we always focus on customer satisfaction and retention, as well as, increasing profits. We are always improving the organization’s products and services. As a manager, one of my duties is to come up with new and exciting packages we can offer our customers. I would meet with my team and brainstorm ideas with them for these packages. It’s important to get their input. I feel that if my team helps develop the products they will be more passionate when selling these packages, which in turn would increase sales.
I would set goals for each individual in my team. I would also put in place a incentive program to keep employees motivated. I understand that most of the time sales people are commission based, but I would also have incentives in place to

I believe a manager should possess 3 basic traits. They are self-awareness, curiosity and independency. Let me elaborate more on this. First and foremost, in order to manage others one must first be able to understand oneself and manage themselves. To understand oneself one must be self-aware. They must know what biases they have so when it comes time to make decisions, they can make a clear concise bias free decision. Also when one is self-aware, they can keep their emotions and feelings out of the equation when deciding. Secondly, a manager should be someone who is curious because curious people will not only look at the surface but also dig deeper into the situation to find out what is actually happening. After looking at a situation from different angles, then they can try new approaches to find out if the real deal is actually what they forecast. Lastly, a manager has to be independent because they are the one who is making the crucial decisions. Many times a manager will listen to others for opinions but the final decision has to have gone through critical thinking and be made solely on the manager’s behalf.…

Management styles are characteristic ways of making decisions and relating to subordinates. This idea was further developed by Robert Tannenbaum and Warren H. Schmidt (1958, 1973), who argued that the style of leadership is dependent upon the prevailing circumstance; therefore leaders should exercise a range of management styles and should deploy them as appropriate.…

After investigating the background of leadership, and looking into various leadership models, I can see there is no single style which will make someone an effective leader/manager. I have learnt that the most effective leaders are those who have the ability to understand which style is required and interchange between the various leadership styles so they apply the style to suit the current task and staff member. I believe that successful leaders need to be self-aware of how their actions can impact others.…

Analyst Gillian Flynn provides a graphic description of a toxic manager as the: "manager who bullies, threatens, yells. The manager whose mood swings determine the climate of the office on any given workday. Who forces employees to whisper in sympathy in cubicles and hallways. The backbiting, belittling boss from hell. Call it what you want - poor interpersonal skills, unfortunate office practices - but some people, by sheer shameful force of their personalities make working for them rotten."…

Being a leader is more than simply holding a leadership position or having the ability to lead. Everyone is capable of being a leader, but not everyone exercises his or her leadership abilities. Each person’s idea of leadership is different. My idea of leadership has developed over time, and being a member of the President’s Leadership Class has helped me develop my philosophy of leadership further than what it was two months ago. My personal philosophy of leadership is the ability to effect change through leading by example, taking initiative, and encouraging others.…
