Their last breathe
I take a seat on the cold stone bench of the arena. The rumble of the crowd fades into my head; the thick July air makes it hard to breathe. It is not my fight but my nerves acts as if it is, shaking in anticipation and fear. The competitors take their places on opposing ends of the field. I'm too far away to see their faces behind their masks but I can feel the adrenaline flow through my body and know that it doesn’t compare to what they must be feeling; knowing that this could be their last minutes alive. I wonder what they did to deserve this. Was it a crime of vengeance that earned them a spot in this place; or were they just an innocent slave that isn’t entitled to this harsh of sentence? One gladiator charges forward

but I feel much more tired from the jet lag. It hasn’t quite set in that I’m in Rome, Italy. It just doesn’t seem real yet. We are headed to the coliseum; I can’t wait to take pictures of it because it’s such a famous landmark. We already have tickets so we skip the massive amount of tourist that have the same plan as we do. We are following our guide that I stopped listening to 10 minutes ago because of her strong Italian accent and speed of talking. The stonewalls are chipped and are as coarse as sandpaper. Time and Mother Nature has spotted the stones. Instantly, I am intrigued by the stories the walls have to tell. What has this place held? It smells of heavy summer heat and of must. The smell reminds me of my grandma’s old …show more content…
The high archways make it feel as if all eyes are in me as I walk in, even though everyone seems to be lost in their own thoughts. The sound of my camera clicking just reminded me that I forgot to turn my headset back on. Her voice seems slower now, “Do you see that cross directly across the floor from us?” she seems to be asking with a heavy heart, her voice is deeper and her eyes are filled with sadness. I look and see a cross that almost blends in with the column behind it, but now is extremely obvious “that the cross was put up to remind us of all the Christians that were killed by Nero

All the hate in the world, all the resentment, all the greed, and all the corruption can drive any person insane, yet we can escape this insanity, and we can escape this evil by participating in events like this. Everyone needs and deserves events like this, but not everyone at my age has realised this yet. People don’t see the importance in an opportunity like this, but four of us and a few more do. Once more, I am one of these people, I am ready to take a break from the stresses of everyday life in the 21st century, and I’m not ready to let an opportunity like this to slip through my hands. And that, is one of the reasons why I believe that I should be one of those who lay the wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and twisted and complex as this essay may be, it is nothing compared to the human mind. But the human mind can be understood sometimes, much like my writing, and one thing that is understood is that the mind needs events like these to relieve the pressure of one’s self and to keep someone sane, and that, along with every other aforementioned reason, is why I truly want to lay the wreath at the Tomb of The Unknown…

“Shaking off from my spirit what must have been a dream, I scanned more narrowly the real aspect of the building. Its principal feature seemed to be that of an excessive antiquity. The discoloration of ages had been great. Minute fungi overspread the whole exterior, hanging in a fine tangled web-work from the eaves. Yet all this was apart from any extraordinary dilapidation. No portion of the masonry had fallen; and there appeared to be a wild inconsistency between its still perfect adaptation of parts, and the crumbling condition of the individual stones. In this there was much that reminded me of the specious totality of old wood-work which has rotted for long years in some neglected vault, with no disturbance from the breath of the external air. Beyond this indication of extensive decay, however, the fabric gave little token of instability. Perhaps the eye of a scrutinizing observer might have discovered a barely perceptible fissure, which, extending from the roof of the building in front, made its way down the wall in a zigzag direction, until it became lost in the sullen waters of the tarn.” (pp.5)…

He glanced up at the beautiful building made of polished white marble, towering over him as if in an attempt to intimidate him. He trudged up the Everest of steps, admiring the ferocious marble gargoyles that were next to the tarnished wooden door. He turned the golden doorknob of the entrance to reveal a lavish reception. An army of exquisite paintings invaded…

The statue towered over the cemetery. The overwhelming size of the statue made you think that there were things out there that were more important than you, or your life. Maybe, I thought, the idea of the statue is to make people stop and take a moment out of their lives to think about the lives of others. It is impressive to think that an intimate object could make you stop your busy life to think about the deceased. I walked up to the statue and just stared. I was in awe. I looked at what surrounded it and saw numerous head stones. I read the head stone and saw that they were for pastors and fathers from the school. The names on the head stones were names that I have seen before. They were the names that the dormitories were named after. These people must have done something very amazing to still be recognized many years later. That notion in itself is very impressive…

As I’m walking on the side walk looking at this calm and peaceful neighborhood I’m falling in love with all the beautiful trees and the serenity of the environment. As I come closer to the Menil I notice how tall it is for a one story building. It’s a simple building but the treasures inside awaits my curious eyes and soul of the arts. I notice the brass inlays and the unique designs upon the green lawn, I so wished there was water to fill it to get another prospective on the art but I continue on my way in.…

The thirteenth emoji going left to right, that has heart eyes and has its lips perked out is relateable to a part of the book where Jerome and Rory are kissing intensively. On page 200 it states "I started pressing my lips into his cheek - just a hint of a kiss,.....I felt his shoulders release, and he made a little noise that was partly a groan, partly a sigh. He kissed my neck up, up, up to my ear......My body flushed itself with all the good chemicals that it takes to reserve for making out. On page 201 it states " He told me scary Jack the Ripper facts, and I had the sudden need to make out with him until I ran out of breath. I would have continued indefinitely if........."…

It was 5:15 P.M on a Friday night. It was snowing. I parked the car along the side of a small restaurant; a short walking distance to the museum. I staggered down the street, through the harsh winds and rapid snowfall. As I approached the museum, the monumental building really came into perspective. The exterior is minimally decorated, which was a surprise for me. Although, the architecture was modern.…

Finally, when I moved to New Orleans I started volunteer work at the Children’s Hospital and helped with pop up clinics for the Latino community twice. Overall I found that helping others shouldn't be something seen as duty or mandatory, it should be spontaneous. Through others experiences and hardships we learn and grow as human beings, not only did I enjoy helping others but I felt that it helped me with my problems. Having moved around so much and meet so many people and living by myself so many years I came to truly be thankful for my blessings and specially for my hardships. Hermann Hesse once said, "I have always believed, and I still believe, that whatever good or bad fortune may come our way we can always give it meaning and transform it into something of value." Helping others made me realize that we all need help and that my way to help others would be through their health. It also taught me not to judge anybody, especially if you don't know what they have been through. I am hard believer that everything happens for a reason, and all the weekends I spend watching my parents help others helping others myself made me the determined person that I am today. Finally, the most important lesson I learned was to never give up, no matter how hard the task is or how bad the problem is there will always be someone willing to help and you can always be both sides to that, the helper or the one who needs…

This scene begins with a downward tilt of Arbiter 's Grounds, which in game is a prison that was built to hold the most merciless criminals while they await trail, execution, or exile. The appearance of Arbiter’s Grounds is tall pillars and rounded walls seem to be a recreation of the Roman Colosseum. The Roman Colosseum is encoded with meaning due to the historic background of the building since it was constructed in 72-80 AD and since then it has been used for gladiatorial contest and re-enactment of famous events and battles for public entertainment. Due to background of the building a more meaningful message is created behind why they used this building rather than a regular house. The audience can use this sign to determine that a boss fight or a big event…

Just behind the cross, piles of rocks lay haphazardly on the ground some vanishing in the blowing dust and sand. More grave markers lay randomly among the rocks, one tombstone leaning against the wind, and three handmade crosses each topping a pile of rocks and debris. On the left, behind the leaning tombstone, a brown picket fence juts out of the ground surrounding what I can only assume is another tomb. Only the whisper of the wind as it beats against the grave markers can be heard in this desolate place. In the background, and barely visible against the brown and grey landscape, is a chain link fence separating the cemetery from a dusty, empty road. Beyond the road a glimpse of the abandoned ASARCO Smelter Works, an ore refinery and at one time, the economic center of…

After retaking the LASSI I have noticed a considerable amount of improvement as well as regression. In the beginning of the year, I vowed to myself that I would become a better student. I wanted to maximize all of my abilities in order to be successful. So, after I took my first LASSI and had my talk with Mac, I began to implement new strategies meant to help me accomplish my goal. First I had to deal with my anxiety. In past years I suffered with a lot of anxiety while learning math. I used to love math very much, however, this changed after my 6th grade year. Math became a foreign subject to me. I could no longer make connections and solve problems. As a result, my grades in math began to drop. As a person who is used to getting A’s and B’s on assignments, I had a difficult time in coping with my failure since it didn’t live up to my standards in the subject of math. My difficulty with math eventually caused me to have anxiety. I had carried this anxiety until my sophomore year in high school. It seemed as if no matter how hard I tried to concentrate on math tests my mind would always become blank. Luckily I had an…

Football has always been a big part of my life. As a young boy I would day dream of making insane touchdowns, making tackles that would leave man stuck in the ground, and even winning the heisman trophy. In 7th grade I had begged my mother endlessly to sign me up for pee wee football because she would always worry about the risks of football. After finally getting her to sign me up, we went straight into the season. I chose to play running back because as a 12-year-old I was remarkably fast having timed 5.3 in the 40 yard-dash. After a few weeks in the season we approached the playoffs and found out our opponent for the first round of the playoffs were the jaguars who were undefeated. Our team didn’t have the best chemistry on…

4:05! And we were explicitly told to be on time; hopefully the class will not leave without me. I arrive to Main Campus and don’t see a classmate in sight. Do you in fact not have a field trip today? Ahhh…let me run to COACB to try not to miss too much class. On my way there, I run into my Professor Aridiana. That’s interesting…its 4:11 and my professor is not in class. Clearly there was some miscommunication in Spanish Art. By the time we were able to coordinate with out entire class where to meet and where we were going, it was 4:30 and we only had an hour to walk to and see the Sagrada Familia. Fortunately, I had already seen the Gaudi’s historic Roman Catholic Church twice as it is arguably Barcelona’s most notable tourist destination. I do always enjoy our class field trips though, gives us an opportunity to spend time with our classmates outside COACB. I must say however, that as the cover page for all of Barcelona’s guidebooks, it is kind of disappointing and anti-climactic. The outside of the building is phenomenal with its intricate and ornate architecture. The 18 spindle shaped towers grace the Barcelona skyline and stand out for miles. Upon entering the actual cathedral, it resembles more of a construction site than the last great sanctuary to Christendom. I understand that this was Gaudi’s last and most important architectural masterpiece, and the reason worked stopped on the church was because of the Spanish Civil War of 1936. Simply put, I think that the excessive amount of scaffolding and workmen don’t do the impressive church the justice it deserves. I look forward to returning to Barcelona in 2050 and seeing the finished…

A few days after arriving in Frankfurt, I was already on the road. The first stop on my road trip, through the exquisite southern region of the country, was the city of Wurzburg. Towering over the city, situated on the mountainside, Wurzburg castle is a gateway into the past. While standing in the presence of this architectural goliath, I cowered below its mighty walls. In the presence of this massive citadel, I imagined that even the bravest generals shuddered while attacking this colossus. Ironically, inside the castle walls it was so peaceful that one could hear a pin drop. The chapel within the castle walls houses the tombs of dead bishops and princes. Their likenesses, engraved forever on the floors of the holy mausoleum, spoke to my soul. While gazing upon the Romanesque style carvings and the Gothic style architecture, I felt transported into a metaphysical realm. The alters of gold magnified the sunlight and reflected it off the ground floor etchings, presenting the tombs in an otherworldly light. Exiting the chapel, I walked into a splendid rose garden decorated with renaissance era sculptures and paintings. Trees with pink…

What I saw in there were no flowers which blossoms or verdure which put a mind to rest, but human bones scattered on the dusty ground. The sight greeted me with the malady, my mind ails with the smell of decay, covering my mouth with my hands, I move forth, avoiding to step on the bones which gave a creak sound; ailing my mental strength which provokes me to panic. What doom befalls here, I can’t tell. The atmosphere around, gave melancholic and sorrowful perception. Fear resides its way alarmingly in my heart, which was pleading me to leave this unsanctified island, however, the dint of curiosity hold me still to explore more, as not far from there I saw a building’s top, round in structure, with crenellated walls. The sight gave me a good omen, of the existence of…
