Personal Narrative
All my life I’ve felt like I was constantly reaching, constantly pushing myself to work hard and achieve goals that to me, didn’t seem difficult to obtain. I never believed that I couldn’t do it. But for 10 of the 17 years of my life all I was doing was reaching, never actually grabbing a hold of whatever it was that I was reaching for.
Throughout my childhood, I participated in many sports. The first thing I participated in was ballet, at the age of 5. At that age, I had set the goal for myself to become a ballerina. I went to my rehearsals, practiced rigorously, and enjoyed myself as much as possible. After a while, I began to realize that I was not a skilled ballerina. In fact, there were many girls in the class who were much more skilled than I was. I did not have the same graceful movements as the other girls nor was I flexible enough. Physically, I just could not compare. I became extremely discouraged and did not return for another year of ballet. This was just the first goal that I would fail to achieve.
This process of starting a new hobby, setting a goal for myself and then failing to achieve this goal continued for the next few years. Be it that I wasn't physically good enough to continue or because I just didn’t have the talent. Whether it were sports such as soccer or hobbies like guitar and piano, I just could not find my niche.
In middle school, and briefly in high school I had taken an interest in music and theater. My music teachers told me how much talent I had, constantly giving me positive feedback on my performance. I worked very hard to progress through my music career. I attended my lessons, rehearsals, and participated in NYSSMA; when a scored composition is performed in front of a judge. However, I never received solo’s in concerts or lead roles in any school plays. For me, it felt as if I was working hard and sacrificing time that could be used to enhance my school performance.
My sophomore year of high school I decided to take interest in new activities that I knew would benefit me regardless of whether or not I would be the most affluent member of the group. I applied for and set a goal to get into the high school’s Academy of Finance, a prestigious two year program during junior and senior year where students college courses to prepare them for a business career. The classes included are College Accounting, Macroeconomics, and many more. Not only was I accepted into the Academy, but I also found out that I did well in these classes. Finance eas something that I enjoyed and would definitely try to make a career out of. The same year, I also joined my school’s debate team. It was something that I sounded very beneficial academically. Immediately I realized that I was skilled in the art of debating and was put on the debate team with a senior who was already debating for 4 years. That year, my partner and I made it into finals for the first time in the high school’s history. Although we did not win, I still enjoyed every minute of being apart of the debate team and I’m still an active member.
What I learned through my journey unachieved goals is that one does not easily find what it is that they are good at. The obstacle in the way of achieving my goals was myself. I discouraged myself from continuing many of my sports and hobbies, and I never gave myself a chance to get certain opportunities that would have allowed me to progress. I learned that things do not come easily and when you work very hard, you gain so much more than you know.

Growing up, I was never naturally athletic and very injury prone. Regardless of these issues, I always remained determined and strived to accomplish my goals. As I enter high school one of my main goals was to make the varsity tennis team. During my freshmen year I practiced every day for the first 3 months of school hoping that I could just make the team. Unfortunately I tore a ligament in my wrist for the second time which prevented me from practicing till right before the tennis season started. I ended barely making the JV team which was very disappointing, but it only motivated me for next year. In my heart I knew that I if I was determined enough I could play varsity next year on my own merit. As I progressed through the sophomore year,…

In chapter 12, the key event to me was when Claudia and Finn talked to each other through the keys. I felt many emotions when reading their interaction one of them being happy. I felt happy when they talked to each other because it was a turning point in the story in my opinion. I also felt surprised because at first, I thought by having two keys, there would be a lock that would need both keys to hear and speak to each other. I also felt confused by the way they conversed; How could they now hear each other but not before. I think by having one key being touched, the other key can hear because on page 153 Claudia says she breathed and rubbed on the key making it warm and on page 154 Finn says when he touches the key it's warm.I like the way the author wrote the scene from both perspectives, it gave us the readers a clearer understanding of how both Finn and Claudia felt. I also like how the author described the way both keys affect each other and have a "key" connection.…

Tennis and marching band are two extracurricular activities that require both dedication and commitment. Prior to entering my first year of high school, I decided that I wanted to take my love for tennis to the next level and make the O’Fallon high school tennis team. In 5th grade, I committed myself to playing the alto saxophone in the school band and all that entails with lessons and practice, with an eye on playing in the high school marching band. During high school, I made a commitment to participate in the Rose Bowl Parade in California. After making that decision, I found out I made the tennis team. Practicing both these activities in the summer and playing during the fall semester put me at odds with my parents on what should come first tennis or band. The amount of time needed for both activities to succeed was monumental and would be an uphill battle compared to the actual time I had. This caused internal conflict knowing that one will not get as much attention as the other. At that moment, I decided to come up with a solution to my problem then put it into action. One way or another I had developed two answers. I realized to become good at band and tennis something had to change.…

Finally, when I moved to New Orleans I started volunteer work at the Children’s Hospital and helped with pop up clinics for the Latino community twice. Overall I found that helping others shouldn't be something seen as duty or mandatory, it should be spontaneous. Through others experiences and hardships we learn and grow as human beings, not only did I enjoy helping others but I felt that it helped me with my problems. Having moved around so much and meet so many people and living by myself so many years I came to truly be thankful for my blessings and specially for my hardships. Hermann Hesse once said, "I have always believed, and I still believe, that whatever good or bad fortune may come our way we can always give it meaning and transform it into something of value." Helping others made me realize that we all need help and that my way to help others would be through their health. It also taught me not to judge anybody, especially if you don't know what they have been through. I am hard believer that everything happens for a reason, and all the weekends I spend watching my parents help others helping others myself made me the determined person that I am today. Finally, the most important lesson I learned was to never give up, no matter how hard the task is or how bad the problem is there will always be someone willing to help and you can always be both sides to that, the helper or the one who needs…

After retaking the LASSI I have noticed a considerable amount of improvement as well as regression. In the beginning of the year, I vowed to myself that I would become a better student. I wanted to maximize all of my abilities in order to be successful. So, after I took my first LASSI and had my talk with Mac, I began to implement new strategies meant to help me accomplish my goal. First I had to deal with my anxiety. In past years I suffered with a lot of anxiety while learning math. I used to love math very much, however, this changed after my 6th grade year. Math became a foreign subject to me. I could no longer make connections and solve problems. As a result, my grades in math began to drop. As a person who is used to getting A’s and B’s on assignments, I had a difficult time in coping with my failure since it didn’t live up to my standards in the subject of math. My difficulty with math eventually caused me to have anxiety. I had carried this anxiety until my sophomore year in high school. It seemed as if no matter how hard I tried to concentrate on math tests my mind would always become blank. Luckily I had an…

Football has always been a big part of my life. As a young boy I would day dream of making insane touchdowns, making tackles that would leave man stuck in the ground, and even winning the heisman trophy. In 7th grade I had begged my mother endlessly to sign me up for pee wee football because she would always worry about the risks of football. After finally getting her to sign me up, we went straight into the season. I chose to play running back because as a 12-year-old I was remarkably fast having timed 5.3 in the 40 yard-dash. After a few weeks in the season we approached the playoffs and found out our opponent for the first round of the playoffs were the jaguars who were undefeated. Our team didn’t have the best chemistry on…

The most important activity I have participated in throughout high school is ballet. I have been dancing for 13 years, and it will always be a passion of mine. I spend up to five days a week training and rehearsing at my dance studio, but because a majority of these classes occur immediately after school, I have had to prioritize my school involvement activities. For many years I had aspirations of becoming a professional ballet dancer, but after several injuries, to my feet, knees, and hips, I was forced to realize that my body could not keep up with the physical strain. After this conclusion, I took up another creative outlet that I have come to love with just as much passion: fine arts. Now I see a future for myself in this field. Because…

    Something About Me

My name is Sindy Chen. I’m easy-going, conscientious, but introvert and unconfident. When I was in high school, for the purpose of getting rid of my shortcoming, I participated in several extracurricular activities actively. I joined the choir, the cooking club, and so forth. In order to overcome my stage fright, I determined to take part in the choir. I think I made the decision on impulse. When I recall the scenes in which I sang and performed on stage, they seemed completely unimaginable. However, there is hard work and bitterness at the back of applause. The process of practice was repetitive and vapid. Several times I nearly gave up, but thanks to support and encouragement of the teacher and teammates, I could stick at it and pick myself up from where I fall. Although it is hard to utterly conquer my fear, I’m glad that I had made up my mind to attempt what I wasn‘t expert in. In a year of training, I exactly learn the worth of group cooperation and precious friendship that is valuable to me. As for the cooking club, I joined it because I got a sense of accomplishment when I finished the work in person. Even though sometimes the food that our group made didn’t taste good, I still enjoyed cooking with my team members. In the process, we learned with joy and were never tired of it. In addition, as a leader of this group, not only did I learn cooking skills, but I also learned how to allocate works efficiently and integrate with other members.…

    Having a Job to Love

I was born to be someone special, someone talented, someone people would one day look back and remember. When I was younger, I remember sitting in my 1st grade class looking at a sheet of paper with only one question listed: “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Unlike every other kid in my class who wrote down either “Ballerina,” “Astronaut,” and “Cowboy,” I wrote down “Musician.” Now that I’m to the point where it’s time to choose my career path, the only difference from 1st grade and now is that I want to be a music educator, director, and composer. These days, a Music Educator makes a decent annual salary, has a great work environment, and the educational requirements aren’t as strenuous and long as some of the educational requirements are for other career paths. In this day and age, not very many people have the opportunity to turn something they’ve been passionately involved with all their lives, and turn it into a career they love. I’d rather have a career that provides me with a job that I love coming to every day, than a job that I was forced to settle with and hate.…
