My jobs were to insert reports into computer. By abling to insert the reports in the computer I was able to learn the codes and the laws of the criminal justice system. I also achieved another shoterm goal by taking a citizen police academy in Wichita, Kansas. On Monday, April 11, I went on a Ride-A-Long with Officer Jim Brooks who is a sergeant at the Taneytown police department. Initially, I was supposed to do the ride-a-long on Friday, April 8, However, Officer Brooks contacted me a few days before, explain to me that they had changed his shift and asked to reschedule the ride- along (which we did, till Monday April 11). This shows how flexible the police staff is, with changes occurring constantly and how they do not have consistent schedules. There are 5 shifts at the station, which each officer works. Taneytown, Maryland is about 2.5 square miles. The police station was built in November of 2002 and is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days of the year. For each community within and…

I have chosen to return to school and pursue a Master’s degree in Criminal Justice for a couple of reasons. The first reason is to increase my personal knowledge of the Criminal Justice system which includes police trends, criminal/civil courts, juvenile justice and other aspects of law enforcement. During my experience as commissioned officer for the past four years I have learned that in order to consider myself as an experienced officer and train others in law enforcement, I have to increase my knowledge base in all areas of Criminal Justice through education. This would give me credibility if I chose to be a Field Training Officer or an instructor at a law enforcement training academy. In order for me to be confident in a supervisory position…

Before this year I was always dead set on being a high school history teacher and thought that I never wanted to teach anything else. During the fall semester I was placed in a sixth grade class for my observation hours and at first I was kind of upset about it. Once I experience a middle school classroom I was still on the fence about what grades I wanted to teach, but I figured I would take this course anyway. I am so happy I did because I decided I want to do my student teaching in middle school. I have realized this is such a unique time in children’s lives and I want more of the molding aspect rather than solely teaching like at the high school level. I want to not only educate students in history, but also have it relate to their every…

At the tender age of eighteen, I began my career as a correctional officer with the Texas Department of Corrections at the Ellis I Unit in Huntsville, Texas, a town with population of only about 30,000 people, but with seven prisons and more than 13,000 inmates. I attended a lengthy and thorough pre-service training academy that was conducted for eight hours every day for two weeks. All trainees were required to live in dormitories together as a group so we could sleep, eat, breathe, and drink corrections. There were about fifty trainees going through the academy at the same time. We were an interesting bunch with about half of the group being young guys like me looking for their first real job and the other half being forty-something military or law enforcement retirees wanting to pursue a new career. There were no women in my academy class. Women at the time could be found in support positions that were primarily clerical, but would not play a direct contact role in male corrections in Texas until 1984 (US Department of Justice, 1991).…

My educational goals and plans involve criminal justice, human services, and vet science. I went to Niacc for two years to try and get my Criminal Justice degree. I took several classes for it, but fell short of money to finish what I needed to graduate. I have always been interested in T.V. shows like Criminal Minds and Law and Order: SVU, 48 Hours, and Dateline. Those shows give me the idea of what I want to do and who I want to be like. I don't know the destined occupation in that career field that I want to do. I would be okay with any job in that career field though. I have much respect for police officers and fire fighters. I always told myself I want to be like them someday. I want to be a hero to someone. I want to go the extra…

My education will never be complete. This knowledge affords me the ability to grow each and every day. It teaches me to question the world and to learn from these questions. I learn through different lenses and circumstances I experience each day. At seventeen, I am nowhere near complete. I am young. I am flawed. I am naïve. What I have learned has led me down different paths in order to achieve different milestones on my own journey. I am strong. I am creative. I am poised...but most importantly I am learning. My education has allowed me to learn about myself, about others, and about the world. I am evolving through the educational process and through the effort of acquiring knowledge. I have no idea what I will learn tomorrow --some days…

The police said it was a robbery and that my father car was found stripped and left up on blocks. My father was barely hanging on for dear life when one of the attorneys from his old job came to tell me that his disability would now be cut off because there would be no way to tell if his injuries was from the job or from the robbery. Oh, but if that wasn’t adding salt to an already open wound, Mack Cannoli arrived to ask me how was I going to pay my father’s debt now that he can’t. What the man had offered as a way to help pay the debt had me taking a swing at him, but his men stopped me. Luckily, the police officer who was investigating the robbery walked in.…

Working at the Public Defender Service for District of Columbia (PDSDC) was an experience that I truly cherish and one that really opened my eyes to the impact a dedicated public interest attorney can make in people's lives. Witnessing how much the talented attorneys I was working for cared about their clients and how much of a difference they made for each them, made me want to continue to help those who are struggling in the criminal justice system. Volunteering as a case-screener for the Mid-Atlantic Innocence Project allows me to do exactly that, while also gaining more valuable legal experience.…

My roles and responsibilities of a criminal justice professional is to serve all those who need it. It's my responsibilities not judge people on their race, religion or economic demographics but to do my job as the best of my abilities no matter the circumstances. Most importantly to me I want to help those who need it most those who have lost all faith in what this country is supposedly build one justice and freedom. “For justice to be true justice, it must be fair. It must be administered equally and exactly to all.” (The Making of America, p. 239). Although I don't have a role in the criminal justice system now I would hope I can play an important role in breaking our corrupt system. Since I’m not sure would type of career as a criminal justice professional I will have I expect that it would make a positive difference in at least one-person life. I guess politics would be a great fit for me with my ideas and thoughts on how to change things for the better. I aim to create new policies and laws to adapt to the ever-changing society we live in. My plan is for my profession to mainly help low income communities, making sure they receive the necessities such as food, education and public housing. To promote the goal of justice they need educate people that's already in the criminal justice field and make sure their doing their job correctly, which will instill trust in the community. They need to listen to the people most affected by the decisions of public officials. Their presence need to be in the public not just when there is a crime. There are many challenges in the field of criminal justice. Most people in the field are corrupted and racist. Departments should offer more training on how to deal with situations other than violent tactics. They should add more requirements to certain jobs, multiple extensive psychological exams to weed out the unfit individuals the public…
