Personal Narrative: A Career As A Service Dog
“Ned, come! Get in the car,” called Jan.
Here we go! It’s time for our trip and I’m so excited. I scamper to the car because I remember what Jan has told me. Service dogs must do everything they are told. Even though I am only a puppy, I want to be a service dog like my uncle someday. Service dogs help people who cannot do important things. Some help people who cannot see well to travel safely. Others help people who cannot move well to manage things like opening doors or turning on lights. Service dogs do very important work for people with disabilities!

There are common misconceptions and misunderstandings about assistance dogs due to the lack of awareness about the subject. Service dogs are protected under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Owners and handlers of these dogs are allowed to have their dog accompany them in public places that would otherwise ban dogs from entrance. However, therapy dogs are not protected under (ADA) and do not have special permission into public places. This is because they do not provide direct assistance to a disability for the owner or handler. Questions may arise about whether or not people are being honest about their pet being a service dog. However, one is not allowed to question the handler about their disability or ask them to have their dog…

Entering Paw Paw I was filled with excitement as I saw the stage being set up and all the campers. Once we were directed to our parking spot, we both got out and gathered our camping supplies. Once we gathered our supplies, we decided to walk around looking for people we knew, as well as camping spots that were not already reserved. After tirelessly searching for friends that were not even there yet to figure out, we came upon what seemed like a perfect spot until we saw that it was reserved. After leaving this campsite, we retreated back to the woods area to sit and think of what to do. Shortly after his girlfriend contacted me saying that she and my ex were there. Hearing this we decided to walk all the way back to the entrance to meet them,…

Through my late teen years I envisioned living in Santa Monica, California. The warm climate, pet friendly areas, and being on my own were at the top of my list. I would be attending The Academy of Art University located in San Francisco, through online courses, majoring in fashion design. My “backup” passion would be the animal health and rescue field. I had always had a passion for animals, from showing Golden Retrievers and Netherland Dwarf rabbits, to my first official job as a feline caretaker with The Second Chance Humane Society at age thirteen. Upon entering the fashion world, I quickly discovered that I would have extreme difficulty with the stress levels due to competitiveness and the overwhelming…

Novels are mainly based around the author’s ideas, but numerous people don’t comprehend that these ideas include the point of view and perception of the story. For instance, the novel A Dog’s Purpose by W. Bruce Cameron, contains an imaginative storyline; however, what creates a truly unique effect is that the novel is narrated by a dog and his journey through different lives. Because the novel is told by an animal, it appears as if the novel is just an entertaining story, but the depth of the novel is actually astounding. One doesn’t anticipate learning important lessons from a dog, yet the lessons taught in the novel are refreshingly taught from a new perspective that they become more insightful. For starters, Toby/Bailey/Ellie/Buddy is a…

All of the journeys that lead to greatness start with a dream, whether it is big or small, but what the person does with their dream is what controls whether it comes true. “All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them.” -Walt Disney. Anyone can have a dream but just like Walt Disney said, they need to have the courage to pursue them if they are to come true. Even today, if a child is asked what they dream of being when they grow up, they usually answer with a police officer or firefighter. The reason for this is because at such a young age all they are interested in is superheroes who save people and the closest thing they have to a superhero is a police officer or firefighter. My answer to this question of course was…

There have been situations where I felt that I have been treated unfairly. I would like to share one that occurred in the spring of 8th grade. As an animal lover, I wanted to find an opportunity that would give me a chance to surround myself in an environment with many types of lovely animals. I went to find an opportunity at a pet shelter that needed volunteers. I walked inside the shelter and asked the front person if there was a volunteer opportunity available. I was told that there was no opportunity available, but I did not think anything about it. I went home, then after a few hours went by, I texted my friend, who is Caucasian, if I could come over to her house. I received a text back saying that she was busy volunteering at the same pet shelter that I had gone to just a few hours ago.…
