We waited in the gym for about 4 hours, then I got hungry. I walked through the dark hallway to use the vending machine. After I got my honey bun, I walked around to the field house to see if they posted the team. They did, 14 id numbers on one sheet of paper. I looked up and down the list multiple times looking for my id number and unfortunately it wasn’t on there. My heart was broken and I was so confused. I walked home teary-eyed and when I arrived home I cried my eyes out. After that I didn’t play basketball for a whole week, which I had never done. After that week I got back in the gym, and kept playing every day as usual. I went to all of their games because I loved the sport and I wanted to support my friends. After the season ended everything went back to normal, we kept going to the YMCA every day. Now school has ended and summer league starts. Coach put me on Jr. Varsity just too test my skills and the first game, it was the best game of my life. I dunked the ball on a fast break and I couldn’t miss. I was the star player and that showed coach I was better so he put me on varsity. All in all I am just saying never give up and work as hard as you can, it will pay…

I only had school every Monday and Tuesday because my mom was so busy and needed to work. When she came home from work she was so tired she would fall asleep. I would worry about not learning stuff but my mom would always tell me that the only thing i needed to learn was street smarts, which is all I need for living in Chicago. The only thing that kept me human was baseball when my dad left, it was there for me when I was sad, I would walk four miles every day just so I could go to batting practice. My mom is wonderful and takes me to every baseball game even though we don’t have much money, we always save up so I can play in the best division possible. I had people come up to me and tell me I could be the next big thing in baseball, but I do it for my mom, she helps me with everything from batting to pitching and she is the best coach you could ask for. My mom gives me strength to not quit and she makes me believe I can do anything. Today is the day, tryouts are always tough but I was gonna try my best and that is all I could do. The first drill was batting we had to hit into the left, right and middle over the fence that was 300 feet away. The first up batting was Jeremy he didn't get it over on any of them, the next guy John didn't get any either. One by one none of them got it over. I heard them call my name, “Zach Lingard, you are up next after Ron Harper”. Ron is the best guy I have ever seen at baseball at my age, and he only got it over one part of the fence, the left side of the fence. The coach called my name, it was my turn. I was terrified, not one of them got it over except for Ron and he only got one over the fence, here goes nothing, the first one on the left side the coach throws me a fast slider down low and I crush it right over the fence, my…

As a young boy of about nine or ten, it was a dream of mine to play on my school’s Varsity Soccer team. I spent many nights watching the current players contest with other schools for the title of WPIAL Champions. Being a young club soccer player, this was my ultimate goal. Now even though I had a strong passion for the game, my many years of club soccer were not easy. I was not a sub-par player, but I was also not the prodigy that some of my teammates were. I had to work much harder than most players to secure my starting spot on my team, but my efforts definitely payed off. For the first five or six years of club soccer, I held a spot as one of my team’s two starting center defenders. All of a sudden, while at a rainy tournament game in West Virginia, I went into a tackle wrong and injured my back. My entire soccer career went downhill from…

It was a very pleasant evening and I was at soccer practice at the South Barrington turf soccer fields. I loved to play soccer and I took it really seriously. Everything I do I go all out. There was no such thing as a second gear for me, I would always go 110 percent. When I was on the field, I could be looked at as a violent person and I would constantly get carded for rough play. During some of our matches I struck so much fear in my opponents they were afraid to guard me.…

A very bright and sunny morning was the first day of my high school soccer tryouts as an incoming freshman. I knew I had to gain the courage to overcome any obstacle that comes my way at my first high school soccer tryout. I had mixed emotions, feeling nervous and anxious to walk onto the field. There were so many questions I had but didn’t have an older brother or friend to help comfort me by answering multiple questions of mine. How many guys are trying out? How is the soccer coach? How good the competition would be in attendance?…

During the end of my freshman year I had received an email asking if I could attend a tryout to see if I would make the team that would be heading over to Europe to play soccer. When my mom told me that I had to go to soccer I asked her why, she said that I had a tryout to see if I would be picked to go to Spain and Portugal to play in two major international soccer tournaments that are held there. When I was told this I was very excited. I went to soccer on the weekend to go to the try out. I had got there and my two best friends were there so I was really happy. I was introduced to basketball when I was in 3rd grade. I wasn’t good at all but I wanted to play to try something new. I played for Holy Angels Catholic School and never got a chance to get in the game because I wasn’t experienced and good enough to compete. That made me very mad and I wanted to work harder during the summer to become better for 4th grade. Came 4th grade year I improved so much that I made the starting center spot and lead my team to 2nd place in the championship game. Every summer I was getting better and better no matter what, I had no days off. Came 7th and 8th grade I had several high schools calling me asking to play for their school, but I chose De La Salle. I wanted to be a student-athlete but it just wasn’t working out at the time, I’m still trying till this very day. You never stop learning so I take that phrase to heart and work to no end. I also thank God for blessing me with this talent because some people are not made for this sport so I’m graceful that I am. My stepdad trained me a lot during this time period. He saw something in me and at the end I did too so I thank him very much for that.…

Growing up, I wasn’t the healthiest child and I knew that I needed to change my habits. Therefore, in middle school, I decided to join my school’s soccer team. I knew a majority of the rules and how to play different positions despite not knowing how to dribble a soccer ball. When I attended the soccer meeting, that’s when it hit me that there’s a huge difference between watching soccer on TV and actually playing. The other players on the team had played soccer since the age of four, and there I was, without soccer experience. After signing up for the team, I felt foolish, scared, and distraught because I didn’t want the other players to judge me. I didn’t want them to make fun of me because I couldn’t dribble or kick a soccer ball, but my inner voice was still telling me, “…
