Personal Narrative: A Career As An Insurance Attorney
Giving It Your All Being an attorney, what a stressful yet rewarding career. Or so my cousin, Katie Whitman Myers has told me. Katie is an Insurance and Reinsurance attorney in New Orleans. Boy oh boy, what the hell does that even mean? I asked when she told me that was the type of law she practiced, and as she chuckled she told me, “Insurance coverage, we write letters telling insurance companies what to do in certain situations and represent them if there’s a lawsuit or something.” So what really is an Insurance Attorney? Why does she have to help the insurance companies and “tell them what to do”? “The contract made between an insurance company and a third party to protect the insurance company from losses. The contract provides for …show more content…
They went to and graduated from LSU Law School together and married shortly after. I would think that being in a relationship especially in law school would be hard so I asked them if that took a toll on their relationship through out law school. Katie responded with, “No, not really. I mean we of course had our ups and downs. We would get stressed out and blow up on each other occasionally (Jimmy cleared his throat and gave her a silly grin) ok, iiii would blow up occasionally. He’s a little more laid back than I am so I think he handled it a little better. But we obviously made it through!” She smiled as she rubbed her belly. They just found out that they are expecting their first child. This making me even more curious, “I have to ask! Do you think having a baby will take a toll on y'all's careers?” and they just looked at each other. They had thought about this already. “I think I will take more than just six weeks off after the baby is born, since I can, but I know eventually I will want to go back to work. We both worked too hard through school to let it go to waste.” That answer definitely hit home for me and made a lot of sense being that I want to go to law school and become an attorney, and a good one hopefully. I have thought further in to the future even to starting my own family and some day would love to be able to stay home but definitely don’t want all of my hard work and dedication to go to …show more content…
She loved her political science classes and all of her debate classes. So, now I knew what she studied, but why? And what did she have to do to accomplish her goals to get in to law school? “I studied political science at LSU for my undergraduate and really had to work hard to get good grades and maintain a high GPA because I knew that’s what they would be looking for when I was applying to law school.. And then of course studying for the LSATS. That was something I never want to have to do again!!” Gosh! Those LSATS, definitely not something I am looking forward to

I was the first in my family to choose a career in law enforcement, so initially, I was unaware of the challenges this career field came with. My mom was a teacher, and my dad worked in the printing business. Both were successful in their chosen fields, but they were blind to the demands required for a fulfilling career in law enforcement. My parents used to fight each other when I was young. My father has a common characteristic which shows on almost all traditional Asia men and that is male chauvinism. When the wife is a traditional Asia woman, it builds up a happy family in the world. However, my mother has her own opinion so sometimes fighting became a common thing in our family. Even though when I grew up and they stopped fighting and started arguing, I still can remember the feelings – helpless, scared and anxious. Therefore, when I meet a client who has involved in domestic violence, my experience may affect my view and consultation for my clients. To be a professional social worker, I need to have an objective view and not taking any bias on clients. For example, I may feel sorry for the victims which represent me and my mother in my mind, and pursue them to make a decision that I recognize is good for them.…
