In “Head And Neck Injuries In Football (Soccer)” Ammar Al-Kashmiri and J. Scott Delaney examine how concussions happen in soccer, what happens to the head when concussed, and how they can be prevented. Al-Kashmiri and Delaney go in depth on the incidence, distribution, and possible control of concussions, making known the increase in head injuries as well as providing multiple studies and statistics for sports related concussions. Transitioning into the biomechanics of a concussion, the authors explain how most concussions in soccer happen, when and where concussions are more likely to occur, and the effect of different types of contact with the head in regard to severity of concussion. Even if an initial head injury does not result in a concussion,…
After contacting Bobak Abdolmohammadi, research assistant at the Boston University CTE Center, of the brain samples donated to the center, around eighty percent are of former football players. His opinion echoes, based upon the findings at BU, that it is the cumulative exposure to repetitive head impacts that is most likely the main explanation behind CTE. He believes it is clear that something must be done to help solve this issue at the basic foundational level. In conclusion, the injury rate in the sport of football in relation to a child/adolescent’s vulnerability to physical injury creates a very precarious situation for a child participating in tackle football. With a high risk of physical injury for a child and the injury rate of football, those constant injuries can develop into overuse injuries like concussions.…
Players have a horrible habit of leading with their heads when making a tackle and one of the most dangerous hits in football is when two players heads collide. This hit results in a high number of concussions due to its direct force and the fact that it…
There are many female soccer players in high school who wear protective headgear and have a sense of confidence that the headgear will protect them from getting any concussions. “Natasha Helmick spent six years playing soccer wearing a headband, believing the headgear would prolong her soccer career by preventing concussions. Helmick, 20, said that the headgear inflated her belief that she was safer on the field and she began to play more aggressively” (Snow). Wearing headgear in soccer will easily boost any girls’ confidence and make them play harder, it will also make the parents feel more comfortable about their daughter going head to head on the soccer field. The only problem with this is players are still at risk come into injuries like concussions. “For Helmick, the head guard gave her family confidence that she was being better protected from head injuries, but she suffered at least five concussions while wearing the headband” (Snow). Helmick is now sidelined from soccer for good. There are many young women who are in high school that suffer such severe cases of concussions and they can no longer play the game they love. Some of these young women have had up to five concussions and are only between the ages fifteen through seventeen. The concussions these young women in high school suffer are so severe they are only allowed to attend school for four hours a day and have to eat in candlelight to ease their headaches. “The number of girls suffering concussions in soccer accounts for the second largest amount of all concussions reported by young athletes” (Snow). From my experience with playing soccer for fifteen years, heading is a very important part of the game. Heading is an important part of the game because it can be a matter of scoring a winning goal or even to tie the game. When I played soccer growing up I was unaware of the risks of concussions because the girls I…
Some people believe that if they ban headers in youth soccer it will modify one of the fundamentals of how soccer is played and that the percent of change that it will bring if they do ban headers isn’t high enough for all people to agree on. People argue they would rather stress on more illegal body contact. But one of my team mates and longtime friends got brain problems because he headed to much in the game. It was one of our last games of the season he went for a header, and then after he hit the ball he fell to the ground unconscious. When he was taken to the hospital, he had a very bad concussion and had never damage in his neck.…
I decided to read this book to forget some bad memories. When I found this book at the e-book site, I believed that I would be able to get good advices to forget bad memories from this book. However, in this book, there were not enough advices to forget the memories. There were some expertise about the brain and her personal stories. I did not regret to buy and read this book, but I am not satisfied in this book.…
The seriousness of sports-related concussions will have harsh repercussions where the impact of being hit forcibly repeatedly can lead to severe bodily harm where quality of life is affected. Although the topic of concussions related to sport injuries has garnered much attention in today’s era where safety is promoted to protect the athlete’s health. However; this was not the case in the early 20th Century for athletes who suffered brain damage from the result of playing football. (Harrision, 2014) stated “years before the first medical study of football injury was published, it was obvious that this new American game was dangerous. Even though the players and public knew of the dangers of football, unfortunately; some athletes did not report…

That disease can possibly lead to death. It is essential that the players of the game have a great reason to believe that they will not develop that disease. Football, America’s sport may be the most dangerous sport because of the long-term effects that one may have after one’s career. Many unsuccessful attempts to come up with a solution to concussions still puzzle those who are influenced by the game While the NFL would be concerned at the loss of fans and there revenues that maybe the least of the worries that NFL have. The number of concussions among the players becomes an enormous concern for the rule makers and the equipment makers and even the agents of the players.…
One very important way to reduce the amount of concussions in football is informing the players about factors such as the dangers of concussions, how the athlete knows if he has one, the rules of the game, and proper tackling and blocking techniques. Teaching and making sure they know the major health and life threatening risks of concussions is a crucial aspect of prevention. Information such as what a concussion is, how it occurs, and the long and short term effects are the main points that must be thoroughly explained to the players. These must be drilled into the athletes’ heads for the reason of teaching and showing them how dangerous a concussion can be and not to take it lightly. The brutal life long effects and what could happen to…
In fact, recent statistics estimate that approximately 300,000 sports-related traumatic brain or head injuries occur annually in the United States alone. (Riddell, Erika).Because of this, concussions are a significant public health issue due to the frequency of occurrence and the short, as well as long-term consequences that are involved In general, the five “E’s” of injury prevention include epidemiology, education, engineering, enforcement of rules, and evaluation of injury prevention programs.. Therefore, recognition of the signs and symptoms of concussions and some knowledge of the principles of management should be included in the preview of all sport participants, their families, and sports personnel such as coaches, trainers, and…
As stated in a medical journal developed by a Rhode Island medical journal, these head injuries are now being looked at closer. The statistics from the article say that they’re over 100,000 reported concussion cases in student athletes ranging from high school to college football, along with a lengthy paragraph stating what the outcomes happen due to the effects of a concussion. Stating that frontal lobe development might slow down or stop entirely making simple problem solving skills and emotional control a lot harder on for the individual in life, due to this…

When I was asked to interview a Psychology Professor in order to get to know the Psychology Department better, and to broaden my knowledge in the field of Psychology, I was very excited. Psychology was never offered as a class at my high school, and all that I know about Psychology I learned from my mother. As much as I was very excited to get to know about Psychology and a Psychology Professor, I was a little nervous about meeting and talking with a professor who I had never met before. I built up the guts and courage and emailed Professor McIntyre and asked her if she would be willing to meet with me. She was delighted to meet with me, but could only interview over the phone because she needed to be home with her new baby girl. I would like…
I agree with you Jessica on having unrealistic images of yourself and the difference between looking a certain way and feeling a certain way. Cultural identity is a big deal to teenage girls because it projects her identity based on a certain groups that she associates with (Matlin, 2012, p. 124). In high school I was in the group of misfits, that happen to be mainly boys, and we had friends in other groups but we did not fit in anywhere else. Even though I projected an image of not caring about what others thought of me, I still felt I was fat and when I looked in the mirror, I saw myself as fat. I look back now and I was at an ideal weight then but currently I still think and feel I am obese. I am reminded by the doctor during every checkup…
