Personal Narrative: A Day At Macy's Herald Square
The first time I attended Macy ‘s Herald Square on W 24th St I was a junior in high school. My fashion merchandising and management 1B class went there on a field trip to acquire some of their history and information on what it takes to run such a large retail store. When our tour guide was finished we had free time to explore the store. I remember wanting to shop but being too overwhelmed because I wasn’t looking for anything particular and couldn’t decide where to start or where to go. At the end of the day I didn’t purchase anything. Although I was amazed a retail store could be 3 acres, I realized that day I prefer smaller retail stores. I wasn’t back to Macy’s Herald Square until I began going to FIT in fall 2015. I went back with my

The economic crisis that started in 2007 affected the business of upscale department stores countrywide. Upscale department stores understand that the items they sell are considered discretionary items, so when there is an economic downturn, they are one of the first industries to be hit. When looking over the Nordstrom Annual Reports from the last few years, there are two things evident: this company has a lasting strategy and they work hard to continuously evolve this strategy. Their strategy includes constantly evaluating risks in the market such as economic conditions, competitive market forces, availability of merchandise, and growth. With an incredible sense to stay ahead of the trends, minimize turnover time, and serve their customers with an uncanny ability, they have easily become one of the top department stores in the country. Nordstrom’s core strength revolves around their customer-first attitude, customer loyalty and their aptitude for merchandising. “Going forward we want to be more than just customer focused. Instead, we’re working to become a truly customer-driven organization.”[1]…

This report presents data describing the differences amongst the two department stores, their fundamental visions, and comparative statistics. Macy’s or Dillard’s: Differences amongst these competitors There are several aspects you can analyze from each department store. Major pieces do set each one apart from the other. Brand names carried by Macy’s and Dillard’s from an average shoppers point of view can go completely unnoticed unless price is involved. For trend shoppers brand names can either make or break a retail store. It can easily determine if he or she will walk to Macy’s or Dillard’s because they already know the store does or does not carry that brand. This is consistent with each department throughout both stores and affects revenue significantly. Macy’s currently has 15 private labels which include: Alfani, American Rag, Charter Club, Club Room, First Imoressions, Green Dog, Hotel Collection, I-N-C International Concepts, JM Collection, John Ashford, Material London, Style & Co, Taso Elb, The Cellar, and Tools of the Trade. Dillard’s brand names include: Cypress Links, Lawton Harbor, Oak Creek, Roundtree & Yorke and St. Durand, Bechamel, Cabernet, Copper Key, Preston & York and Westbound, Class Club, Brioso and Simply Comfort. Store appeal is another difference between the two retail stores. Macy’s has recently revamped all of their stores with a new trendier design and customer friendly use. Dillard’s is still conservative and plain when you walk into one of the department stores. The younger crowd would gear more towards Macy’s as a first choice of shopping. Elements that Macy’s brought into play were minor, but important customer satisfactions such as wider fitting rooms with waiting areas, international visitor centers and a dining experience in select stores. Macy’s also integrated the self-price check throughout their stores which relieves a lot of customer service, when you have the famous, “How much is this?” question. Dillard’s is trying…

I walked into the doors of Statehouse Expo Center, my feet walking with the sound of my bag rolling over the little cracks on the light floor tile, my white uniform as crisp as a fall breeze. With every step further, I could see more people. Lots more people. The mats filled with people. People who spend their whole lives working to be where they are, on those mats. Sparring, combat, weapons and forms. XMA in one corner, Black Belts in another corner, everyone else in a corner and staging in a corner. All surrounded by a Sr. Master or the occasional Master. When we get to a tournament, our team always meets up. Then all the kids go explore. We found our team and all the kids put away their IPads and Kindle Fires.…

I remember anxiously waiting for 9:00 o’clock so we could go explore the store. The grocery store could be kind of spooky during the night but this didn’t bother us too much because we would be busy playing tag or hide and seek throughout the store. The grocery store has seven aisles. Aisles 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 are nothing special but aisle 6 is divided into in half by a variety of items as well as a candy box ( I don’t know what else to call it).…

“It works just as good as the name brand,” my mother would always suggest. As I have matured, I regret to admit that, in most instances, my mother’s notion was right. Consequently, those very words describe my shopping nature. When I think of what kind of shopper I am and how I have developed my shopping habits, there are three factors that are responsible for my consumer behavior. Those factors include my childhood shopping experiences, my knowledge of advertising and marketing, and my persona.…

I worked three hours on Sunday 8/23/2015 at Old Navy as a cashier. Cashiering is quickly becoming one of my favorite jobs. Before I was sent to register 3, I had to go through some ethics training about Old Navy's zero harassment policy. I have had to do similar training for another job I had so this was nothing new. At the register, I faced some normal challenges a cashier faces on a average day from the computer running slow to the credit card reader not working. During this work day, I was given a new challenge and responsibility of wearing a walkie talkie earpiece. I have never used one before and it was pretty exciting to learn this new skill. With this machine, I can hear the mangers and other select employees that have a walkie. I had…

    The Mall

In Alan Brinkley’s essay The Mall he explores the history of shopping complexes in the United States and gives us insight on the different kinds of complexes. The mall started off as a shopping center. The first shopping center was the Country Club Plaza, opened in Kansas City in 1924. The shopping center soon increased in size and became small “strips.” In 1956, the first enclosed, climate controlled shopping opened in Minneapolis and was called South Dale Shopping Center many cities. The malls spread and began to have similar aspects of the downtowns that they were rapidly displacing, but they were safer. Soon after that malls started being built in many cities. The malls were still increasing in size and they were begging to add movie theaters, video arcades, bowling alleys, restaurants, and hotels. “In cities and towns in every part of America, malls became not just a place for shopping, but often centers of a much-altered community life as well” (Brinkley 115). Malls became like little cities with their own police that were private security forces. For the most part they were able to keep undesirable customers off the premises. Mall evolved into self-contained imitations of cities, minus many of the troubling abrasive features of downtowns. Malls set out to be perfect urban spaces mostly having white middle class women in mind. Many teenagers began to cling to the malls instead of other hang out spots such as street corners, parks and downtown. The mall became a universal shopping center that attracted everyone.…

In the early 1990's, Americans were spread out and the suburbs were not as appealing. When the American mall came, numerous ideas and opportunities came as well. Americans began to move closer to these newly found projects and begin to socially adapt. The American mall allowed people to come together and have the opportunity to shop, eat, and socialize all in the same place. Malls began to offer more than just a place to shop. In the 1950's, we saw Gruen's creative design of an enclosed complex that was equip with central garden courts with fishponds, balconies, hanging plants, and cafe tables. These buildings also began to come built with central air and heating, which was very modern during this time. Malls were now becoming a place for people to not only shop, but a place of enjoyment and relaxation. People no longer began to come to the mall to buy clothing or house ware; they began to see the mall as a fun, new innovative place of excitement. People would meet each other at mall to hang out and have fun because all in the same building were places for consumers to enjoy children’s' play areas, live shows, and packed auditoriums (Gruen and Smith, 24). A variety of foods in either the food court or themed restaurants were also available. There were different ways to get people on board with this new building. Some days employees were asked to bring their families to the mall and…
