Personal Narrative: A Day In The Classroom
Nine am. Cool July morning. Then, the screaming. Over the summer I worked at a special needs camp in a pre-k inclusion classroom, and one of the neurotypical peers was a four year old boy with bright blue eyes, a warm laugh, and defiant, aggressive attitude. Anytime this little boy would be asked to do anything, whether it be transition activities or put on his shoes, a full blown meltdown would ensue. The meltdown would not only be disruptive, but potentially harmful to the others since the intense screaming and kicking could cause a sensory overload. The other staff would try different methods of discipline, that would, at the most, last 10 minutes. Then one morning, I was assigned to him. Discipline may be my weakness, but creativity is my strength. Throughout the day, I talked him as a friend, I explained things logically when he was being defiant, and instead of commanding him to walk down the hallway, I became the monster whose favorite meal is little blue eyed boys. We developed a routine rather quickly. In the morning we ran around the gym. Next we would go to circle, and instead of screaming, he would eagerly sit with me and I’d scratch his back. We would then go out to the swings where we would make up stories about how he was swinging so high, he was going to fly over the moon and meet the aliens that drove pizza cars on Mars. He would laugh when I told him I fly a pink plane to camp, saying that he knew I was lying because he went to the airport and didn’t see my plane. I became the only one he would listen to, but also the only one he would trust. Even on days where his mom told us he had been nasty all morning, it took me three words to see his smile again.     During my semester in Nature of the Learner I was placed in a second grade classroom at Johnson Street Elementary. This was a global studies school.     On Thursday, September 15 at Cohasset Elementary school in Van Nuys, I worked at my practicum site for the first time in a Head Start class of three and four year olds. My goal for this first class was to become familiar with the children and the classroom routine. One of the first things I noticed was that all the children and the teachers are Hispanic and speak Spanish, although the class is mostly taught in English. I experienced a diversity issue between myself and the staff and children in the classroom. The main barrier I faced was the language.     The child I chose to observe was a 6 year old boy that I will refer to as Timmy. Timmy is an intelligent, active little boy who reportedly struggles with behavior. Timmy lives with his parents. He has two 14 year old half sisters one of each belonging to his mom and dad prior to them meeting and getting married. The sisters live in the home with Timmy part time. I observed Timmy in his afternoon childcare classroom from 10:55am-11:55am. The classroom was spacious with large windows along one of the walls over looking the playground.     Traveling into the Indian Territory, we were being angrily chased down by three Indians furiously shouting at us. Dashing through the thick forest, the savage Indians were throwing spears and shooting arrows that narrowly missed us.     All children behave badly from time to time. But, when defiance, hostility and refusal to comply are a constant behavior from your child (as it is in my home) that affects the entire family, you’ll know it requires a more serious intervention.
