Personal Narrative: A Trip To The Alemany Farmer's Market
San Francisco; the most European of American cities, world renown for scenic beauty, the famous coastal fog and landmarks that include the Golden Gate Bridge, “cable cars that climb halfway to the sky,” Fisherman’s Wharf, Alcatraz, Chinatown, Union Square and Mission Dolores, although at the moment, to us the city only represented a spot on earth where we would meet Noke; a family member, a friendly face who recognized us and would welcome us with open arms to this great, big new country. It was Tuesday just before noon when we arrived, desperately weary from our travels and immensely looking forward to no longer having to move from place to place. When all the other train passengers waiting outside had left, unable to communicate with her …show more content…
From Highway 101, we took the Silver Street exit, as Noke explained that we were going to a farmer’s market. Knowing how much Oma and Evie would enjoy their first experience visiting a market in California, he was eager to show us the Alemany Farmer’s Market; the oldest one in the Bay Area. Even though Evie and Oma were indeed tired, they found their second wind; a burst of energy, as they listened to Noke tell them about the copious quantities of fresh local produce always available …show more content…
We past the city of Brisbane, which Noke said was known as “the City of Stars” for the residents and business owners who display large, illuminated stars, some exceeding 10 feet in diameter, on the rooftops of their homes during the Christmas Season. I imagined the magical sight of all those lighted stars on top of the homes throughout Brisbane. Soon, we noticed an enormous sign of white letters on a hillside proclaiming that we were driving past “South San Francisco, the Industrial City,” everything was a grand size compared to the intimate size of everything in Holland. Fondly, Noke pointed out the main points of interest along the way, while Ellen and I pointed out magnificent homes to each other and wondered if that was the home we were going to live

Laura, a Mexican immigrant and student in Rose’s remedial English class, has a completely different frame of reference than California born UCLA students she finds herself in class with. She remembers in detail how her father made a meager living as a “food vendor” in Tijuana. The types of food, the smells and the other items he sold are cannot be forgotten by Laura. She emigrated, with her parents, to the United States at the age of six (Rose 1). These memories keep her connected to Mexico.…

I remember anxiously waiting for 9:00 o’clock so we could go explore the store. The grocery store could be kind of spooky during the night but this didn’t bother us too much because we would be busy playing tag or hide and seek throughout the store. The grocery store has seven aisles. Aisles 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 are nothing special but aisle 6 is divided into in half by a variety of items as well as a candy box ( I don’t know what else to call it).…

There are two visions of Los Angeles – one of a successful, sprawling ‘Jewel of the West Coast’ and one, the ‘‘nightmare’ anti-myth’ of superficial soullessness first depicted by Noir (Davis 21). Both perspectives fade in and out of fashion. Los Angeles’ founders hoped for a sprawling utopia, capable of usurping San Francisco. In the early 1940s however disenchanted artists and thinkers began spreading the dystropic perception of Los Angeles that still colors our perception of it. Noir’s gutless, rotten, Aryan, trophy wife ‘L.A.’ still lingers. As Mike Davis1 puts it ‘Noir made Los Angeles the city that American intellectuals love to hate’ (Davis 21). Recently however, a new wave of pro-Angelino literature has begun fighting back. Many Americans adamantly stereotype Los Angeles along Noir lines, but its become trendy to argue against the superficial and artificial reputation of this city. Its ‘paradoxical’ land (MacWilliams 184) has two faces. L.A. is both ‘the sunny refuge of White Protestant America’ (Davis 33) and the only city in the world more, or equally, as diverse as New York (Davis 80).…

As a Chinese-American, my family expected me to help out at the restaurant while maintaining straight A's in school. But, it wasn't easy; every day, I would report to the restaurant after school and immediately start working. Inside the kitchen, I would pack all the orders into aluminum containers, place them into a brown bag, and insert packets of sauces and utensils. Burns and cuts were common due to the terrible and tearable aluminum containers. Outside at the front desk, I would answer the seemingly endless ringing phones. In many instances, customers had to wait either on the phone or at the front desk for me to find their orders on the computer, even after they showed me where it was on the menu. During lunch hours, the pressure was even…

For nearly two and a half years between 2008 and 2010, San Francisco, California was host to two parallel worlds. Simultaneous to the quotidian urbanity, a burgeoning venue for spatial and ludic interrogation intertwined itself with the city’s urban fabric. The evidence of this second world sprouted gradually: strange flyers on street corners advertising fantastical and unbelievable technologies, cryptic graffiti, and a pirate radio station that was only within range from the city’s Mission Dolores Park. In response, thousands of San Franciscans enlisted and engaged with this parallel realm over the course of its operation. These participants endeavoured on quests across the city in the name of Eva, a vagabond artist who had…
