Personal Narrative: Adoption From The Animal Shelter
The day I adopted my pet

Wow! I can't believe today is the day I got my parents to adopt a pet from the animal shelter. My mom asked me if I was ready to go. I responded with "I've been waiting for this day my entire life!"

To begin with, we were finding a parking spot at the shelter. After we parked my mom questioned me saying "Are you excited?"

I responded with "Of course I am!"

We had entered the shelter and saw tons of puppies and kittens. There were many varieties of animals to choose from. I didn't know if I should get a dog or cat.

Next to this, I was starting to worry about if I could take care of it. The thought of it gave me butterflies. My mom popped out of no where and said "You better hurry

If I could have one do-over in life, I would relive my sister Myra's adoption day. The adoption took place about nine years ago, when Myra and I were both five. I remember feeling extremely petulant because I was wearing a dress. I cannot blame my younger self for my actions because I didn't truly know what I was doing, but I as I look back on that day, I feel a twinge of regret, due to a typical child reaction. The pictures that were taken show my sisters, smiling and excited, and me, looking sulky and bad-tempered; in essence, I was being a brat. I regret my behavior because I'm afraid that Myra might have believed that my attitude was because I didn't want to be her sister, and that was most certainly not the case. I was having a selfish…

It was a relaxing day at home in the Helfman household. My mom was constantly jabbering on the phone, my dad’s eyes were glued to his computer working, and my brother was stuck to his bed and never got up. My brother, Danny had gotten into Syracuse University a few months earlier and he was ecstatic about the life he was going to make for himself. Danny and I got along well our whole lives, but we weren’t as close as some other siblings. This upset me because sometimes all I wanted to do was talk to my brother and get his advice. I have three dogs. My dogs Sadie, Tootsie, and Lucky are cuddly and soft toy poodles.…

I was almost labeled a hamster killer. The first pets i got were dwarf hamsters. I went to petsmart with my mom and picked out two hamsters that were supposedly both girls, but one ended up being a boy. One's name was Caesar and the other Felipe. They weren’t always the nicest, but that didn’t make me love them any less. There was this one time that both of my dwarf hamster's got out while i was at school. My mom told me when i got home that she closed the door to my bedroom because they had escaped. I searched everywhere in my room for them. One hamster was under my bed and the other under my sister's bed since we shared a room at the time. Hamsters always find a way to get into the hardest places to find them in. I caught the one under my sisters bed and he was fine. When i went to get the other one out something funny, but sad happened. I have bins with wheels on them that i would roll under my bed and store stuff in. I had to roll the one under my bed out to see where the hamster was because i couldn't find her. So, as im doing this my mom came in the room to see if i had caught them. I was rolling the bin out as i saw something flat squashed on the floor…

I woke up to the sound of my alarm going off. "Would you turn that shit off." I heard James Kennedy, my foster father, yell. I quickly stopped my alarm and got up to walk downstairs. While walking down the stairs i slipped and fell straight on my ass bone. "Why can't you even walk down the stairs correctly." My foster father muttered while walking to the kitchen. I finally gathered myself together and walked into the kitchen. My foster father sat at the table reading the newspaper. "Look at this mexican f*g." My foster father said pointing to a photo of a man with long hair pulled back into a ponytail. The title read "Lin-Manuel Miranda broke the record for Tony nominations." I read the first sentence of the article about this Lin dude and…

When I first started college I was set on working in adoption and foster care. The whole reason I wanted to be a social worker was because of the book A Child Called It. If you have not read the book, it is about a boy named David whose mother abused him in the most unimaginable ways. When the social worker came and removed him from the home I knew that someday I wanted to be able to rescue a kid like David from his home and help him to find a better life. This is why I like the idea of adoption and foster care.…

We were so happy, I started explaining to her where we were, how the place looked like and that there was a big garbage can, as I explain tears dripped from my eyes. We hugged each other, cried, and stayed put right next to the garbage can. We finally saw my mother’s silver BMW car. We slowly walked towards the car, making sure that it was my mother or one of our parents are in there. I then saw my mother did something with her hand, I know what that meant to hurry up, I told my little cousins to hurry up and get in the car, we ran as fast as we could towards the car and got in. Since then my little cousins and I learned a very big and important lesson that we will never forget, it to your pacings with your family, close and to tell them that you need a break if you are losing your…

I remember this story so vividly because it was quite an embarrassing situation for me. It was a beautiful day outside and my mom wanted to go shopping, I hated shopping but I was tired of being at home so, I agreed to go with her. I was 12 years old and I remember wearing a bright red and blue jacket with deep pockets. Our first stop was TG&Y, we got out of the car and I remember thinking that I haven’t gotten into any trouble lately maybe, if I behaved, just maybe, I could finally get that bottle of perfume I had so desperately been wanting for what seemed like forever. I remember it was so beautifully packaged and when I smelled it, it was the most exquisite aroma. I can’t remember now how it smelled, but just that it was the sweetest smelling perfume that my nose had ever had the privelage of being exposed to. My mother was in a great mood and I thought that I would somehow coax her over to the perfume aisle and persuade her to buy it for me. I played along and pretended to be perfectly content looking at the shampoo and the toothbrushes and whatever else she decided to pick up and ponder over. Finally, I mustered up the courage to ask if we could go to the perfume aisle and smell all of the perfume a couple of aisles over. When she said yes, I was so happy and I merrily walked, no, skipped over there with my mom in tow. “Look!”, I said with so much excitement, “They have the perfume I’ve been wanting!”, “Please”, I asked. When I got her response, “No, not today”, within the blink of an eye my…

In elementary school, I decided that I wanted to work with animals. My mom told me that Humane Society volunteers had to be 8 or older, so I waited. Soon after my 8th birthday, after looking forward to the opportunity for what felt like many years, I was finally able to attend classes in dog walking, dog bathing, and cat house monitoring. Of those, I took to bathing the dogs because it had the least rules. I don't remember whether I chose to work with my mom or I was too young to volunteer without her, but both of us would drive out to Honolulu every weekend to work for a few hours.…
