The Good Daughter by Caroline Hwang is an essay about the author’s identity and dual culture as an American and her ethnicity as a daughter of Korean immigrants. She starts her anecdote with her trip to the dry cleaning store wherein she met a woman who is also of Korean ethnicity. She tried to identify herself as a fellow American-Korean by doing a customary Korean greeting. When the woman asks Caroline her name, she is inclined to ask if she is Chinese. The reason being is because Caroline mispronounces her last name, Hwang. After Hwang explains to her in English of her ethnicity, the woman bursts out in laughter and corrects her. Caroline takes this a little offensive, probably because of the fact that she had just dropped out of graduate school and her “sense of identity” was disappearing.…

If I could have one do-over in life, I would relive my sister Myra's adoption day. The adoption took place about nine years ago, when Myra and I were both five. I remember feeling extremely petulant because I was wearing a dress. I cannot blame my younger self for my actions because I didn't truly know what I was doing, but I as I look back on that day, I feel a twinge of regret, due to a typical child reaction. The pictures that were taken show my sisters, smiling and excited, and me, looking sulky and bad-tempered; in essence, I was being a brat. I regret my behavior because I'm afraid that Myra might have believed that my attitude was because I didn't want to be her sister, and that was most certainly not the case. I was having a selfish…

She was born on a busy summer night on September 13th 1918 in Brookline, Massachusetts. I always had the feeling that Rosie was a little different from the rest of us. On the day of her birth the midwife arrived late, and my theory is that this action deprived her brain of oxygen. We were proven right when she failed to advance from kindergarten and was deemed to suffer from intellectual disabilities. When this happened our parents began to conceal their third child from society.…

prosperity, but none of them reveal the way through which inequality is produced as it is done in Unequal Childhoods: Class, Race, and Family Life by American sociologist Annette Lareau. The author has analyzed the relationships of children with their families and the external world that differ depending on social class by making observations from primary school, conversing with students’ parents. As a result, Lareau identifies two parenting styles: concerted cultivation and the accomplishment of natural growth.…

Since the creation of humans, the world’s inhabitants have needed human connections and family. Adam needed eve, a newborn baby needs his parents, the monster from Frankenstein by Mary Shelley (1831) needed a family, and Michael from Michael by William Wordsworth (1800) identified himself by his love for his son, Luke. The way a child grows up and the involvement of his family plays a large role in the development of character and his outlook on life. If fathers and mothers did not leave, if siblings always took care of each other, and if there was no betrayal within home life, maybe the world would look significantly different than it does today. Although human relationships in general are a vital part to life, family relationships are the…

Growing up as a little kid I really didn’t have any toys or friends to play with. My dad works in construction, I asked him one day if he could built me a little play house for me, he told me that he would think about it. Until the next day he brought in some wood, nails, paint… so on and so forth to build the house. Now, this house was like no Barbie house, this house was a life size house for a little kid. I remember helping my dad drawing and building it to make it looked all pretty. The house look like a real house, it had a door with a door knob, and a window. The house could even fit in my blue chair with letters on it so I can go inside, sit down and eat my snacks in there. I loved it so much I would usually take my naps in there.…

As most children grow up, they are aware of their surroundings and take in everything they can understand which adds to their personality and their structure of life. As a child I developed at a level more advanced than the children around me. I learned to use a computer at the age of 3 years old. I read at an 8th-9th grade level while in the 5th grade. In addition, I could handle complex situations better than a average elementary student. The mindset I had as a child unlocked new doors for me. For example, I was not afraid to try new things and accept the lessons that came along with new opportunities. Also, I learned from my parents that going down the path of success isn’t always easy. Lastly, I experienced that life is filled with…

The issue you tried to cover is really unique and good. When I was a child my siblings used to help me study mats, physics and chemistry. They always used to show me step by step and then, they let me practice with several similar questions. That helps me for my present knowledge. I remember there were other children’s whose parents will do their home works for them. For sure they used to get a better grade but I am not sure if it helped them. There for from my own experience it is better to guide them and let them to try and fail; since it won’t hurt them to fail instead it will teach…

I come from a world where the only thing that is constant, is change. Changing states, changing houses, and changing schools. Unlike most other kids, I don't have a childhood home where I made countless memories, in fact, my earliest memories as a child all consist of cardboard moving boxes, along with unimaginably long car rides to foreign places. I don’t have a door marked to show how I've grown over the years, and I don't have a bedroom wall thick with paint covering over colors I chose as a child. Truthfully, often times when I was younger, and would see someone with these things, I was tempted to be envious and couldn't help but to think how lucky they were to have such stability. As a result of this, I spent a large portion of my childhood…
