Personal Narrative: Balancing School And Work

“The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step” (Lao Tzu). My journey and current academic goal is to be an accountant. Fortunately, I have been able to live at home and work part time while taking classes at Northern Virginia Community College (NVCC). Balancing school and work has been both challenging and rewarding. Working has enabled me to receive a paycheck, become more confident, gain more independence, and exhibit exceptional time management skills. Attending NVCC has given me the academic courses, strength and knowledge needed to propel me on to my future goals. Both school and work together has made it difficult to execute my best in school. This school year I made the decision that I could no longer work part time
while in school. Engaging more in my academics has had a positive impact on my grades. Therefore, my transcripts from this Fall semester show a much higher G.P.A. than last Fall semester. I will finish strong at NVCC receiving my A.S. Degree in Business Administration this Spring. Transferring into the accounting program at George Mason University will be very academically challenging. Nevertheless, I am confident that I will successfully fulfill and conquer the challenges ahead.
