My chapter of Alpha Phi Omega is Alpha Beta Zeta, located at Radford University. Each member is required to get 35 community service hours each semester. Service projects occur around the New River Valley and help a variety of community organizations. Because Alpha Phi Omega has a partnership with the Boy Scouts of America, we host many projects that allow us to help them facilitate big events. Projects I have worked on include: cleaning a local daycare center, performing trail maintenance along a portion of the Appalachian Trail, collecting food for Meals on Wheels, raising money for different causes, running youth programs for Boy Scouts and 4-H events, cleaning our Adopt-A-Spot, beautifying local parks, and many other programs. Over the…
A small child views a painting, giggling to his mother how it looks like an elephant soaring throughout the galaxy. An hour later a middle age man views the exact painting only to acknowledge the abstract painting as a collage of miscellaneous shapes and colors. This view is much like the comparison between John James Auburn and Annie Dillard passages, revealing opposite and similar aspects on the subject of birds.…
Walking into the locker room about to get ready to go to our last football game of the season. I could smell the sweaty equipment from the kids who never take their pads home. The Hempfield Spartans 7th grade team would be ending their season 0-7 if we didn’t win today. As I was changing into my pads my friend mike walked in the room. I said “you ready for tonight”. “Heck yeah” replied Mike.…
I'm sure everyone has wondered in their lifetime, “Is there really a God?”. I know I have! There are many religions like Buddhism and Hinduism, but most people believe in Christianity. Christianity follows the teachings and miracles of Jesus Christ with the belief that He is God. There are many branches of Christianity. I'm writing this to tell you about why I am a Nazarene Christian. The things I will be covering are wildlife, the spread of Christianity, and the planet Earth's perfect tilt.…
It’s funny how we try to fool ourselves into thinking we have any control of our lives. We live with the idea that we have full authority over our choices and our days. In early 1989, My husband, Charles, and I were living in Charleston SC and had just been blessed with our first baby girl. Bringing her home had put my Master’s Degree on hold, and my husband felt that this would be a perfect time for us to move, but I quickly nixed his plan.…
When I was assigned this assignment I was skeptical, but this assignment really helped me understand myself. There wasn't much information to go off of besides, show who you are, so this is who I am. This picture displays me hanging from a tree, with water behind me, and it's featuring my BYU hoodie.…

The right to physician-assisted suicide is a very controversial topic that concerns many people all over the world. There has been much debate about whether a terminally ill patient has the right to die with the assistance of a physician. Physician-assisted suicide is defined as a physician providing a patient with means to kill themselves. The doctor would prescribe a lethal dose of medication to the patient to end their life. From the Utilitarian standpoint, physician-assisted suicide is morally acceptable because the patients should be allowed to end there suffering, reduce the damaging financial…
Galatians 2:20” I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.” Knowing Jesus on a personal level is the greatest thing in the world. When we come to know Jesus all the angels in Heaven rejoice. Having a relationship with the Lord can change your life forever. I love knowing that There is a God up in Heaven that I can go to when things get out of hand. Glorifying God for the rest of my life will be something I will always cherish.…
During the year of 2010, the summer before eighth grade year. I got the chance to participate in a five day youth mission trip in Galveston Texas with my church that went by the name of Oakwood Baptist Church. During the mission trip there would be many different activities that our church group would get to be a part of, such as an outdoor dodge ball tournament, indoor carnivals, and our very own Vacation Bible School. I was able to take part in this amazing adventure, and I couldn’t wait for it to begin.…
I never thought how interesting it would be to visit a different place of worship besides Christianity. Since the day I was born I’ve been a Christian and whatever anyone else believes in is wrong and that they are going to hell if they don’t believe in Christianity. About 3 years ago I visited the International Buddhist Progress Society a Buddhist temple in Naperville. Buddhism from what I learned looks more like a way of life or guidelines to it rather than a religion. Buddhism tells you how you could live life better but doesn’t scare you with the prospect of hell instead you live with ignorance. My own history with Christianity still made me doubt or fear the conquences of going to this temple. Part of me believed that I be punished by…
Today was the day. The big day. My election for Lieutenant Governor of Division 2B for Key Club, an international service club, was today. Fear and anxiety pricked my skin in rapid movements emanating from every pore. I rehearsed my speech for the fifth time that day. Upon arrival at the Fairfax Library, I urged myself to remain calm. I quickly scouted out the other girls who were present; one girl was dressed professionally with a folder in her hand. I knew that was my competition. The girl spoke eloquently and genially, she radiated enthusiasm and a certain warmth that I did not have. With every question that was asked, she answered with a smooth smile and high-pitched tone that was dripping with sincerity. I bristled inside; I had just been slapped. I was shrouded in a cloud of anxiety and anxiousness. Suddenly, I was dragged from my reverie.…
First cold of the school year not that bad right? But over fall break I gained my focus back and I am “beating” myself up for not doing my homework but at least I got my basement, soon to be room painted. The bad thing about colds is they are like a roller coaster you feel fine one minute and the next you feel like your “dying”. This is not how I wanted my week back from an overwhelming and stressful break. This had made me think about what we discussed about in spiritual formation about the Sabbath. I have grown up and even taught what the Sabbath was, but as I get older I realize how important it is to take a break and relax at least once a week. I mean God would not have made it if we did not need it. I am beginning to come to terms with…
Throughout my life I have encountered many circumstances that have shaped me into the person I am today. I was born in Moroleon, Guanajuato, Mexico. I attended school in Mexico all the way to second grade. In the summer of 2006 I moved to Cumming, Georgia. It was the hardest thing to do because I left everything that I care the most about. We lived in a trailer which was not the nicest place and in the middle of the forest. I started school at the beginning of August. I had always loved school so I was so excited for the first day. I knew it was going to be hard because I would have to conquer so many obstacles on the way. At this time the only English I knew was probably counting from one to ten and some of the colors. My Father knew some…
My personal mission statement is to be the best that I can be and work hard to help others be the best they can be. This statement is important to me because I have always found that I am at my best when I am helping people, whether its helping people at my job or at the grocery store. There are many things that fall into place with that, which to me, mainly includes education, because I am a student and I work in a college where I work with students and I listen to their problems and relate to them. So education is very important in general, but to me Community and Industry Education is very important and important to a lot of people. First off I have attended Tarrant County College and I have gained so much from that experience. I have gained…
