Personal Narrative-Belly Night
Every morning I wake up to the annoying sound of Abigael’s alarm clock and the smell of my own leather. Don’t get me wrong; I love waking up to the song, “Endlessly” by the Cab, but does it have to be at six-fifteen in the morning every day even on weekends? I mean, does she not like to sleep? I’ll never understand it. Once Abigael finally wakes up, the anticipation starts to set in. Which pair of shoes will she choose today? Fortunately for me there’s not too much competition. There are the smelly sneakers, the blue heels, myself, and then there’s the cowboy boots. I cannot stand those cowboy boots and there are three pairs of them! I understand that since I am an ankle boot myself, I should get along with them more, but I hate them. They always pick on me since I’m too short to be considered a cowboy boot, which leaves me in this odd in between group …show more content…
I am happy to make the journey downstairs, as I am tired after the day and ready to head to bed early. Abigael stops in front of the mirror one more time as she reaches into her back pocket, grabs the gentleman’s number, and smiles as she looks at the piece of paper. She then looks down at me and says, “Glad I had my lucky boots on today.” It is in that moment that I realize what I am. I am Abigael’s lucky, sassy pair of boots. I may not be a tall, tan pair of leather cowboy boots, but I am short, black, made of slick leather, and have plenty of sass with my three-inch heel. It all makes sense now; why Abigael always walks a little taller in me, why she wears me so often, and why she always walks with just a little more pep in her step while wearing me. I feel content as Abigael slides me off and returns me to the floor of her closet. I will no longer feel inferior to those taller boots, now I feel nothing but pride and will sleep peacefully knowing that I am wanted. Today has been a great day because now I know exactly what I am; lucky and

“I promised,” she whispered, taking his hand and leading him to the bed. Sitting him down on the edge, she got down on her knees and started to take off his boots. Pulling one off, she looked up at him smiling, “I remember helping you before with your footwear, Mr. Darcy.” Letting out a short chuckle, he nodded, “A blurred occasion, Miss Price. For weeks I pondered how each came to be on the wrong foot.”…

"I'm wearing the new dress, pink and white with stripes, and new underclothes and socks and the old saddle shoes I wear to school, brown and white, the kind I get every September because they last long, and they do. My feet scuffed and round, and the heels all crooked that look dumb with this dress", says Esperanza while at her cousin's baptism party, where all she can think of is how horrible she looks (47). Esperanza has all new clothes, but the only thing she explains in detail is her shoes. To her, her shoes mean everything to her, she has everything new on, and she looks beautiful, but if she still has her everyday shoes on which brings down the whole outfit because it's not everyday that she gets to go to a party, and because she has her old shoes on she…

The recent summer rainstorms have transformed the roadways, of Wrongberight a rural hamlet on the eastern shores of Virginia, into a never-ending slip and slide. Late Saturday afternoon, vivacious Clemmy Sue Jarvis, a petite woman of sixty three, cautiously pulled out of her driveway, and slowly turned south on to Flat Bottom Road. She maneuvered the rain soaked road with great care. Nevertheless, fifty yards from her dearest friend Estelle Louise’s long dirt driveway, her rusty Chevy pickup, that she has kept mobile for years with hairpins, bubble gum, and duct tape, skidded across a massive oil slick. As a result, the pickup spins in wide circles as…

    Night Memoir Paper

I choose the memoir Night by Elie Wiesel. It is a book about his experience, and also his family’s experiences throughout the holocaust. This book follows Elie and some of his family and friends from shortly before the holocaust all the way to his first moments being a free man. It describes his memories, his hopes, and his dreams. At certain points he almost gave up but he continued, survived, and got his horrifying message out to the world so people can look back on one of the worst parts of human history. The memoir genre feels like the author is just talking to you normally and telling you a story about a certain memory in his life. He really wants you to connect with the people he talks about and especially his family. This book is easily understandable if you have any idea of what the holocaust was. The way he writes this memoir, it is easy for you to get into the book and really start to see what he was seeing at the time. He has a couple main themes like his relationship with his father and darkness. However unlike a normal book, I feel he didn’t focus on the themes as much as he did as just getting the story out naturally. Books that usually are the memoir genre are about a big event in someone else’s life like a million little pieces, or about an event that affected everyone’s life like Night and the holocaust. I personally like memoirs over biography’s because they are more concise and have a narrower target audience. When I go to a library and pick up a memoir, I can usually tell if I’m going to like it or not because it tells you exactly what the author is going to talk about. If I read a biography, I could like the part of it that was interesting but not liked the parts I didn’t want to read about. An example is if I would want to read about the holocaust. I would rather read a memoir about the holocaust specifically than a biography that talk about the person’s life more before and after the event. I was fairly familiar with this genre before reading…

As the story opens, we are introduced to an opinionated, observant, sarcastic and hormone-driven 19-year old boy who works as a cashier in a grocery store of a small town. As he describes the store and his surroundings, the reader begins to sense Sammy’s discontentment with his mundane life when he shares his thoughts and perceptions. For example, he refers to customers as “sheep” and “house slaves”. The external conflict between Sammy and his small town’s views develops as he watches the girls maneuver their way around the store. These girls were a breath of fresh air. They were new, different and seemed to stir up some outrage and criticism. For instance, Updike writes, “A few house-slaves in pin curlers even looked around after pushing their carts past to make sure what they had seen was correct” (119). He even began to feel sorry for the girls as he saw “old McMahon patting his mouth and looking after them sizing up their joints” (Updike 120). This demonstrates how Sammy began to realize how closed-minded and ordinary the town he lived in was. Another external conflict arises when Lengel, the store manager and Sunday school teacher confronts the girls about the store’s policy. In particular, Updike states, “‘we want you decently dressed when you come in here’ ” (121). Sammy resented the fact that Lengel and all the “sheep” judged the girls simply by their clothing or lack thereof. His act of quitting was to show them that they all overreacted to the situation with the girls.…

Through examining the life of Kenan, a middle aged man, it will be proven that humour has an important role in his daily life. Kenan has the duty of carrying canisters to the brewery to bring clean, filtered water for his family and Mrs. Ristovski, the neighbour. Before the war, Kenan was a clerical assistant at an accounting firm. His journey to the brewery is very risky because at any point he may be shot; therefore, humour has a huge impact in the way Kenan presently lives his life. Before Kenan leaves his house his wife and him joke about their clothes: “Would you like me to get you some shoes?...No, she says. But I’ll take a hat if you have time...Of course, he says. I would assume you would like mink?” (Galloway, 26). At a time of war, fancy clothes will not benefit either of them, but he leaves his wife in a good mood. Amila and Kenan use light humour to make a dark situation a little…

It’s midnight and as I expected, a black Ford F-150 Truck with tinted windows pulls up to my house. I walk outside holding a backpack with my portable speakers and a baseball bat. However, I quickly change my mind and leave the baseball bat inside the house. I hop into the back seat of the truck and am greeted by four large burly kids. “What’s up Matt?” says Ben who is sitting in the drivers seat. With music blasting, Ben takes off the parking brake and presses his foot down onto the gas pedal. Soon we are heading down dark winding roads as we listen to music from Captain Murphy, which contributes to our mischievous mood. Finally we arrive.…

The laughing eyes are quieted, as all focus now belongs on me. I am conscious of my clothes, showing no signs of wear, in a dark contrast to threadbare coverings, draped loosely over bony shoulders. My bracelets jingle. As earrings bob from my ears, the polished silver reflects the dusty streets and empty stares. I am ashamed of the sparkle, as new sandals protect my lily petal feet from the heat of the sun beaten ground. My feet are kept cool, as the breeze gently tickles. This same playful breeze does nothing for my burning face, as it is warmed by the army of stares.…

Throughout the course of our childhood, we have all been told frightening stories. Whether those stories were about “The Boogey Man” or “Bloody Mary” or even an original story, they all served one purpose, to frighten us into behaving. I really wish I had listened to my mother, I really wish I hadn’t tried to be the moron I was, if only I had experienced the slightest ounce of fear to prevent me from entering the woods, especially at night, when evil is said to be at its strongest.…

What can I help you with tonight?", asked the rotund man named Carl. His voice was nasally, and from my dad's facial expression I could tell he thought the same thing. His face was scrunched up like he had smelled something bad; he turned to me and said, "Does it look like I need any help?" I was not dumb enough to say anything to that, and apparently, neither was Carl. He slowly backed away from us until he got to the cash register, where an angry black woman started to wave a shoe in his face, saying,"These are NOT the shoes I ordered! I want a discount!" So, they aren't the shoes you ordered and you want them anyway? I literally have no words, and I always have a snarky comment stored away. Anyway, my dad looked like he was about to go on a warpath, so I decided to sit down. Meanwhile, my father decided to look at some shoes, and I started to make faces at the little Indian boy who was sitting beside me. For a moment, it seemed as if my dad had calmed down because he was carefully pursuing the shoe collection with a thoughtful, peaceful expression. Until the angry black woman accidently spilled her coffee on his…
