town of Cheyenne, Wyoming. By the end of the week, we ended up in Hailey, Idaho. Although it was the middle of June, it was freezing cold and snowing there. We had to buy winter clothes, because we only brought t-shirts and shorts. While we stayed there, we visited the mountains of Sun Valley, where we went hiking, and played in the snow. After several days in Sun Valley dad loaded up the car, and we headed South to Nevada. Our goal was to reach San Francisco, California by that evening. It was an magnificent twelve hour drive. By sundown, we stood on Pier 39 taking in the awe-inspiring view of Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge. By this time, we were exhausted, so we checked into a hotel to rest and plan for where we would go next. The following day, we hit the road and headed South on highway 1. I can’t even put into words how jaw-dropping the combination of ocean on one side, and mountains on the other.
It was like a scene straight out of the movies. We stopped somewhere near Monterey to observe a large herd of elephant seals that had gathered on the shore. On the eighth day of our trip we made it to San Diego. While in San Diego we visited Point Loma Park where it’s possible to watch our military in training at Base Coronado. We also visited the San Diego Zoo. The park is over 100-acres, and is home to over 3,700 rare and endangered animals representing more than 650 species and subspecies. We spent the entire day trying to see it all, which is impossible. Our next stop was Disneyland, another full day of non-stop excitement. We must have rode Big Thunder Mountain 20 times! After 2 exhausting day of park hopping we decided to spend a few relaxing days at Huntington Beach, the water was freezing, so we mostly just played in the sand. By this time, we had to plan our trip back home. Since we traveled across the northern states on our way there it only seemed practical to take the southern route home. We drove through Arizona, stopping along the way to see the magnificent Grand Canyon, The White Sands National Monument, and The Carlsbad Caverns National Park. Not to mention the numerous other route 66 landmarks we stopped to observe. It was amazing how the landscape changed from mountains, to canyons, to prairies, to rolling
hills. We also drove through New Mexico, Texas, and Arkansas. When we finally made it home, it felt as though we had been gone forever. Even though we felt like we couldn't stand being around each other anymore, I believe that trip brought us together as a family. It was a wonderful experience filled with beautiful new places, and amazing people. I hope that one day we can have that experience again.
