Personal Narrative-Cultural Narrative
It was the depths of winter, and the view outside my window was not the familiar white sands of Kailua beach, but a thick blanket of snow. Nor was the sky outside a clear blue, but a stoic, steely gray. My German hadn't improved much, even though I had been in Munich for three months. My host family was nice, but no true relationships had been formed. Cabin fever permeated the household, and the irritation coming off of my host family was palpable. Back home, I was 'adventurous,' a 'risk-taker,' so I had figured that spending a year abroad would be no problem. But now, with homesickness seeping into my mind, I realized my hubris – I hadn't understood what being completely immersed in a different culture would entail. Perhaps I was not as brave and independent as I had convinced myself I was. The dislocation had exposed my faults: my introverted behavior and my inability to pick up a language. Conversing with my peers was torture, as I spewed out nonsensical German phrases. School was just as brutal; I sat in class analyzing the movements of my …show more content…
With that in mind, I remembered my mother telling me that food is the easiest way to bring a group of people together. Desperate to make a connection, I decided one day to reintroduce myself to my host family with a traditional American meal: hamburgers and Coke. Initiating conversation was difficult at first. The words I wanted to say halted in my throat. Suddenly, frustrations and fears that were bottled inside for so long poured onto the table in a catharsis of conflicting emotions. My host family responded immediately with consistent affirmation that they wanted me to succeed and questioned what they could do to help. The hours spent at that dinner were a time of reflection and introspection. I left with a re-born determination: I realized how much I wanted, and needed, to finish the

Looking out the front window, the ground was covered in powdery white snow, sparkling, like it had glitter in it. I took in the brilliant sight right in front of me, it was, for lack of a better description, magical. Throughout my seventeen years, I have met and dealt with various groups of people with diverse ethnic backgrounds from school or through my volunteer activities. However, nothing prepared me for my summer job at the new local Walmart store. The first day of my first paying job was also the grand opening day for Walmart at the Dulles Landing store. I have met countless employees and customers with so many different backgrounds and cultures, who communicate with each other in so many different languages. The whole atmosphere at the Walmart store feels like I am in the middle of the busy World Market. There are countless demanding and exasperated customers that I deal with each day at the customer service counter. Through this experience,…

Do you ever look at a complete stranger and immediately categorize that person? I will be the first to admit that I have done so more than I would care to acknowledge. I was definitely raised to look down upon people, especially the Jewish, in spite of what my parents will tell you. Although I was never actually told not to like or associate with a Jewish person, the adults in my family made it known that it was unacceptable by saying unpleasant things about them. I heard the jewish would come to nice neighborhoods, take them over, and ruin them. I also heard that they killed Jesus. It was inevitable that I too would see Jewish people as inferior to me. With all the bad things I heard, it only seemed natural. I thought Jewish people were arrogant, greedy, conniving, and uneducated. I thought they should leave our country because their religion and cultural beliefs were un-American. From the time I was a little girl through my early twenties I looked down upon Jewish people until I met Joel one day while I was working.…

As I was writing my personal narrative for my composition 1 class, it easily made my mind boggle. After I had got started on my personal narrative, it was easy for me to keep writing and keep following along the story line. The main strength of mine that the essay played to was my creativity and my flexibility for different writings, because I have never written an essay as serious and sad as this one, but I did have to add my happy ending when I finished the story. I wanted it to be very attention grabbing with a twist, but I also wanted it to be very emotional.…

Yet another Thanksgiving, and I was stuck in my uncle’s basement watching the Redskins face off the Dallas Cowboys. Michael Jordan, Serena Williams, and various other famous athletes all grinned at me from their respective Wheaties boxes, seemingly mocking my pain. My uncle collected them and, for some reason, had decided the bright orange boxes would be a great decorative addition to the basement wall behind the television. I remember once, when I was younger, I was searching for a movie to watch and I accidentally brushed against a limited edition Michael Jordan box. The box began to teeter, and I immediately knew that I was doomed. All the boxes began to fall like dominos to the floor. My uncle, needless to say, was furious. Thus, it was seemingly fitting that the offended boxes, now realigned on the wall, would have the privilege to witness my torture by football.…

Starting from a place I remembered as a teen, moving from a place that was warm to a place that had all four seasons; such as winter, spring, summer and fall. The First place that I grew up was surrounded by mountains. During the winter it was full of white snow, something that I was never used to seeing coming from California where all one would see was sandy beaches and the waves clasping one another. As I remember being so new to Park City, UT all I could see was the wonderful views of trees, mountains and people skiing or snowboarding. I have to say this was a fond memory because for the firs time I was actually able to experience the feeling of what winter was…
