Abby,
When listening, reading, and watching the lectures I found so many things interesting, but I never thought about children and how they understand you such as when you say no. Now that I am thinking back when I babysat, I remember young children could understand things such as no, but all they could do was mumble. Language is so fasinating because children learn, understand, and then talk with the language that surrounds them.
Also, I myself never realized I altered my language to the child’s ability to learn and speak the word. This weekend I visited my cousin who has a 14 month old. As I spent time talking and playing with him I would catch my self altering my language so we would understand. Deb Roy did have some vaild and interesting

My maternal grandmother Shirley Rae Harrington grew up during World War Two. But despite the war, she lived a somewhat normal childhood. When she was young there were very few other children in the area to play with and her younger sister, Sissy, was paralyzed. So she often played by herself in a stream nearby. Her family also owned several horses, chickens, pigs and a billy goat. Surprisingly she didn't get into much trouble as a child, except once when her family was down in our properties Maryland. People were racing speedboats in the creek, so she asked a neighbor who her family knew if she could go. He said yes and took her in his own boat when they got back her parents were fine but Mimi was upset with her. Her first travel experience…

I’ve never wrote in a diary nor have a planned on it, but I feel that my experience should be shared with everyone. My name is Edith Goldberg. I was born 1928 in Teschenmoschel for most of my life which is a small village near Kaiserslautern, Germany. My family were farmers that lived in a small village of about 200 people. The village had a very small Jewish community… It used to be bigger, but over time people either had left or died. From what I remember I had a normal, happy childhood with my parents and sister. I remeber my family and I would be hay-making in the summer and tobogganing in the winter. My family always stuck to the Jewish traditions. Man, Those were the goodtimes. I also remembers a time that wasn’t all that good, which…

Learning- During children’s learning it is important for them to be able to communicate verbally or non-verbally. If I were to be accepted into Thomas Dale’s prodigious Program of the Performing Arts, I would be delighted, not only because I would be able to express my passion for the violin but I could also mingle with the numerous amount of others who possess similar interests as mine. It is also one of my objectives to become a professional musician further along in my career path, Thomas Dale would be one step closer to achieving such an arduous path for a profession. Another reason that seems minor, but is actually significant for my choice of striving for the Arts, is making my wonderful teacher and conductor proud. For example, when we are speaking to babies or toddlers, we would simplify the sentences for them to understand, whereas the older the children we can begin to use harder sentences. For example, when handing out cookies, to a child who is 1 or 2 years of age we may hold out a cookie and say the word, whereas to an older children we would say “Would you like a cookie?”.…

A young child has twice as many neurons than adults. The child brain is plastic, a magnificent and flexible engine for learning. Children learn to crawl, reason, pay attention and remember. They learn to make friends, but nowhere is learning more dramatic than in the way a child learns to master language, the great leap that the brain makes that is nothing short of a miracle. I can relate being the eldest of my siblings’ language development represents one of the most profound mysterious changes.…
