Personal Narrative: Dr. Micheal Brazda
The University of Cincinnati seems a foreign concept for a Colombian-born, Miami native, but I didn't learn about UoC, and its medical school, from advisors or peers, I actually learned about it through an alumni, Dr. Micheal Brazda. I worked with Dr. Brazda during my four years as a physician scribe at Baptist Hospital of Miami. My encounters were fleeting, you see, Dr. Brazda rarely used scribes. Why? Because he spent so much time with patients, listening to them, that he had no use for a scribe. But on one miraculous evening, due to an unforeseen scheduling error, I was able to work alongside him. His style of treating patients, his bed-side manner, his compassion, it was enchanting, and the absolute exception. When I asked him about his

At the beginning of the year it felt like I would have never been able to write any paper that was more than two pages long, it just seemed impossible, but for the research paper I actually had to stop myself from going off and writing a twelve page paper. I will admit and say that English is not my strong suit, in fact it is probably one of my more difficult classes. But just because it is difficult does not mean I don’t like it. I like looking for topics that interest me and still fit in with the guidelines, I like getting involved in the paper and researching the topic until it feels like my head is about to explode. I never saw any of that coming, I thought that I was going to have to go through English and just pray…

“Teely, because I’m so interested in seeing you apply with your Eagle Vision Application…” Central University. “An exclusive invitation from UNCP..” UNC Pembroke. “Mai-Teelee, you’ll want to read this.” Western Carolina. All these colleges and universities showed interest in me by reaching out through emails and letters in the mail but, it wasn’t them whom I was interested in. It was you, UNC Chapel Hill. The first time I heard about you was back in my sophomore year, in AP Environmental Science by a group of classmates who had visited the campus. At that time, I didn’t care that much for colleges. I was still worried about joining clubs and trying to make more friends and just, have fun. Like any other teenager. However, I became intrigued. Just what was it that made this school so well known and liked? Once I decided that I would aim for the medical field, my friends suggested, of course, Chapel Hill. You. They said “It’s a great medical school and you’ll get in easily because you’re Asian.” And being naive, I believed them. I didn’t quite realize just how high your expectations were. But it wouldn’t be too difficult I assumed…

Earlier this semester I had the opportunity to sit down with Dr. Kahn, and asked him some questions. I was interested in asking him questions because I had admired him as a teacher, and a person throughout the semester. I had never met someone who appeared as intelligent as Dr. Kahn, but was also down to earth. In class he spoke in a way that was easy to understand, he also accepted, and answered our questions no matter how ignorant, or insignificant.…

Ever since I transferred to the University of Miami as an undergrad, I have had the gratification and honor to meet and work with various remarkable people, from physicians to scientists and staff. Doing research and shadowing at Miami Miller School of Medicine gave me the prospect to admire how marvelous the school and its community are. Furthermore, I have had the satisfaction to meet several professors who teach at the medical school and the prospect of learning from them is enticing. Being able to experience first-hand the compassion and care that the doctors at Miller demonstrate their patients have also confirmed that this school is not short of role models for me to follow. Additionally, I have met several students who have shared their…

The future is a scary, but also exciting, thing to think about. I feel lucky to have been given the opportunity to take this course where exploring our education and our future was the whole point. I feel as though I learned a lot during the duration of this course, but I haven’t really had the opportunity to put it into practice yet which is why I am glad this paper was assigned. It gives me the opportunity to really explore my future in ways I haven’t done so yet. In order to really see how this course has affected me, I must first look back at old assignments to see how I have changed since the beginning of this course and during the duration of this course.…

Finally, when I moved to New Orleans I started volunteer work at the Children’s Hospital and helped with pop up clinics for the Latino community twice. Overall I found that helping others shouldn't be something seen as duty or mandatory, it should be spontaneous. Through others experiences and hardships we learn and grow as human beings, not only did I enjoy helping others but I felt that it helped me with my problems. Having moved around so much and meet so many people and living by myself so many years I came to truly be thankful for my blessings and specially for my hardships. Hermann Hesse once said, "I have always believed, and I still believe, that whatever good or bad fortune may come our way we can always give it meaning and transform it into something of value." Helping others made me realize that we all need help and that my way to help others would be through their health. It also taught me not to judge anybody, especially if you don't know what they have been through. I am hard believer that everything happens for a reason, and all the weekends I spend watching my parents help others helping others myself made me the determined person that I am today. Finally, the most important lesson I learned was to never give up, no matter how hard the task is or how bad the problem is there will always be someone willing to help and you can always be both sides to that, the helper or the one who needs…

In high school, I had the opportunity to learn about a number of different subjects, starting from introduction to engineering to world history. Out of the many choices, there was only one that captivated me: Biomedical science. When I walked into class on the first day of school, I saw a cadaver at the back of my classroom. My teacher had told the class to find out why this lady had died, and I was the first in my class to find out. The poor lady had died from a clogged artery. As a child I had dreamed of being an engineer, exploring and developing complex systems for the world, but on that day I realized that biology was the right path for my future. Earth's organisms never failed to excite me with their seemingly never-ending intricacies.…

The day after Hurricane María hit, my family and I stepped outside to behold the destruction for the first time. Never had we witnessed so much vegetation tumbled down and uprooted. However, when faced with that devastation, I kept quiet. Stepping into my garage, I grabbed a machete and continued outside. Among branches and leaves, I began to cut down logs and other debris that was in the way. The street had been completely cut off by a forest that had toppled in front of my house. Little by little, my family and I started hacking wood in order to open a route. Noticing us, my neighbors walked outside with their own tools and started to work alongside us. That occurred during the early morning; within five hours, more than fifty people from our community joined our efforts and we had successfully created a passage for people and their cars to travel through in order to acquire supplies and, eventually, return to their jobs.…
