August 2004 I started my first day of Kindergarten at Deer Valley Elementary School. I still remember taking the hand of the fifth grade peer helper, who I thought at the time was basically an adult, I walking to the library where I waited for school to start. Little that I know that as I took the peer helpers hand and walked towards the library I was also walking towards the beginning of a very enjoyable six years. I give a lot of credit to my elementary school teachers in how successful I was throughout my entire K-12 career. They were always so kind, and they always went above and beyond to make sure that I was not bored with the curriculum. They instilled a desire to learn in me that I have carried ever since. In Kindergarten
my teacher was Mrs. Stanberry, in First Grade my teacher was Ms. Colston, in Second Grade my teacher was Mrs. Woolard, in Third Grade my teacher was Mrs. Trammell, in Fourth Grade my teacher was Ms. McCune, and in Fifth Grade my teacher was Mrs. Colston. I occasionally run into one of these teachers at places such as the grocery store or the movies, and it makes me happy because they still recognize me and we catch up about my life. Looking back on elementary school today as a high school senior, I realize that I should have cherished it more. There are numerous days where I where I wish naps and recess part of the bell schedule. Another thing I miss about elementary schools were the field trips. My two favorite field trips took place in the fifth grade. We spent 3 days and 2 nights at Camp Cosby in Alpine Alabama, and later in the school year we took a day trip to Chattanooga, Tennessee where we went to Ruby Falls and the Aquarium. Field trips were so much fun, and it is a shame that they stop becoming regular things after elementary school. Nowadays I drive by Deer Valley Elementary, and I become noglastic. I pass by the front lawn of the school and think about playing kickball in P.E., I drive past the Extend Day Patio and think of the countless afternoons I spend running around waiting for my mom to pick me up, and I drive by swing sets and think about how I played on the swings everyday at recess. In sum, elementary school was a super fun time in my life, and I will never forget my time spent there.
