Personal Narrative Essay: Entering The Woods On The Trail
The trail continued around the east side of the lake entering a gathering of trees forming an insignificant forest along the lake’s shoreline. From our viewpoint, the trees concealing the trail eventually dispersed on the southeast side of the lake, and the trail blended into the landscape. Using our imagination, we envisioned the route against the rugged terrain sloping into the lake. No point in taking a vote now, we had trekked to the lake and the consensus was to proceed with a lap around the lake. Entering the woods, Tim immediately went into scouting mode. Tim always seems to be in the market for the perfect campsite for future reference. On occasion he has spoken of humoring Gavin with a hike and overnight Campout. This trail would be a viable …show more content…
I followed and Tim held the anchor position, last. The cloud cover continued to move into the area from below the mountain, and all the while I was keeping close tabs on it, I periodically attempted mental telepathy to possibly produce a glimpse of the surrounding peaks somewhere through the white layer. The chances still looked grim. After being in the vicinity of the lake for over an hour, I sensed Tim could be stalling, waiting for that lucky break in the clouds. If he was stalling, that I would have been okay with that as I’m sure a glimpse of Pillchuck’s peak would have been quite the spectacle. Ahead, a section of land jetted out to a point on the lake’s edge and something on it had caught Tim’s eye .Leaving the trail, I watched him navigate down onto the point at lake level where he began surveying the area. As I followed, I quickly understood what attracted him. The landscape and layout was another prime camp location. Our time on the point was short, gazing at the different views and taking pictures. Staging us looking into the sun, Tim took a few pictures of Holly and me, and in turn I snapped a few keepsakes of

In this book Bill Bryson is planning on hiking the entire 2,220 miles of the Appalachian Trial. He wanted to reacquaint himself with nature and his inner sense of self. In the beginning of the book he thought he would have to take this journey alone but he was joined by an old friend who he hadn’t talked to in a while. As he and Stephen Katz; his friend that had joined him started hiking the Appalachian Trial they were off pace and slow and they both hiked at different paces so they rarely hiked together. When I think about how slow and difficult the beginning was for them, it reminds me of how you will be as you begin your new journey, it will be completely new to you. There will be hardships there will be competition there will be new experiences that you will have to learn to deal with. There will be no one by your side telling you what turn to make next. They had a road map to tell them where to go and which way to turn but you do not, you have to make your own decisions and choose the path that you want to take without knowing the outcome or knowing where it leads.…

The first thing that immediately caught my attention was the countless groups of joggers that constantly kept on passing by my side. I decided that the Arboretum was an ideal place to jog because of its many long windy gravel pathways coupled with the many sights and sounds of nature. Alongside joggers, I saw numerous people (mostly couples) holding hands and walking their dogs. I also took notice to many man-made features as I conducted my field research. Immediately after entering Wild Goose Woods I noticed a small shelter constructed out of large tree branches and old tree logs. The trails that run through the Arboretum are filled with park benches, often in places where those sitting can enjoy the immediate scenery. Much of the Wild Goose Wood trail was covered in wet thick mud due to excessive rainfall. In order for me and other trail trekkers to pass through the trail required the use of long tree logs and branches placed over the muddy, rain-laden soil, so as to not muck up your shoes and boots. I figured I was the only one to visit this trail in a while considering how many bridges I had to gap.The outline in the course manual asked to describe the land as we presently see it. I questioned what other uses these trail systems would provide during the other seasons of the year. I figured if the landscape was suitable for jogging then it…

Although it’s been many years and many miles since I last spent an afternoon with Tim Stengel, on afternoons filled with lecture notes and correcting essays, I often reflect on the last fishing trip the two of us young bucks spent along the secluded shores of the Little Manitou River. In many ways, this last trip spent in the coniferous forests of Minnesota’s Arrowhead Region, really envelopes who Tim was and why I so looked up to him.…

We were ready. Paddles in hand, canoe by our side, personal floatation devices, knee pads, and cameras. The afternoon sun shined on the lake, reflecting it across the calm waters. Crowds of people were enjoying their Sunday afternoon on North Beach at Devil’s Lake State Park. Young children stumbled on the moist sand and shallow waters as they tried to catch tadpoles with their small buckets. Soothing, a gentle breeze passed by as we walked towards the edge of Devil’s Lake. Marveling at the majestic mountain of cedars around the lake and smelling the damp sand, my dad, little sister, and I were all set to take on our first wilderness inquiry; canoeing across a lake. It was safe to say that we were in for an exciting adventure…

It’s midnight and as I expected, a black Ford F-150 Truck with tinted windows pulls up to my house. I walk outside holding a backpack with my portable speakers and a baseball bat. However, I quickly change my mind and leave the baseball bat inside the house. I hop into the back seat of the truck and am greeted by four large burly kids. “What’s up Matt?” says Ben who is sitting in the drivers seat. With music blasting, Ben takes off the parking brake and presses his foot down onto the gas pedal. Soon we are heading down dark winding roads as we listen to music from Captain Murphy, which contributes to our mischievous mood. Finally we arrive.…

The sun shone vibrantly through the trees and I loved the way it complemented the gold leaves. I started to notice the incline to the top of the hill, it was steady unlike the Adirondacks where you go up and down. When I got to the top I saw a spectacular view of the surrounding neighborhoods and way in the distance I saw the buildings of Rochester. As I stood there I admired the pure beauty that lies so close to home. It is hard to believe that a wilderness like this one could be surrounded by suburban neighborhoods. Being higher up and in an open space I could really appreciate the mixture of golds, oranges and yellows it was different than being on regular ground level. I thought to myself ‘’I should do this more often, it’s peaceful and healthy.’’ I felt a certain peace with in me while I’m in the woods, suddenly my phone vibration broke my train of thought. It was my stepmom texting me to see if everything was okay, I replied yes and I’d be back at the trailhead in a short time. The leaves snapped and cracked under my feet on the way back and the crisp fall air made the not yet fallen leaves dance in the trees, it was getting later in the day. I was three quarters through the loop so I was still fine,I wasn’t…

Yesterday me and my Dad went on an 11ish mile hike on the Appalachian Trail. This hike was probably one of the coolest hikes I've been on. It went from one beautiful landscape to another. As I was laying in bed that night with my muscles aching from the extra 1.5 miles we didn't plan on, I realized I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for my Dad. He introduced me to my love of the outdoors and my passion to hike the entire AT. I hope one day ,Dad, we can stand on Mount Katahdin together and look back at the 2190 miles behind…

Bill Bryson’s “A Walk in the Woods” is a book that epitomizes the struggles that one needs to go through in order to better themselves. This is evident with the main characters. They are two middle aged men named Bryson, a man who resideds in New Hampshire and Katz, Bryson’s overweight alcoholic college friend from Iowa. When he thought of someone to accompany him, a grumpy college friend named Katz came to mind. As they started off, Bryson started off with the goal that the trail was only being hiked as a way to see the grand nation of America, but it lead to so much more as it uncovered many important topics. This is true because the trail was filled with adventure in discovering America’s heartland and realizing their own personal problems. Through this, the men conquered many areas of their life that they were not strong in before including fitness, cooperation with others and finally, specifically, Katz addressing his personal issues. Therefore, even though they didn’t complete the entire trail, which was the original goal, they achieved something else that is more important, conquering their personal flaws, thus making this trip a complete, utter success.…

A thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail entails trekking the entire route without stopping. Running slightly over 2,000 miles, most people start in Georgia and end in the middle of Maine. For nearly all hikers, it takes five to seven months to complete. The trail is always near a town, so many people, if they’re willing to use the extra money, will spend a few nights a week at a hotel on top of a comfy mattress. The cost can add up, however, so there are more than 250 shelters located along the trail. People can also bring camping supplies and…

Growing up in rural Kansas was boring. Especially since I grew up in the seventies. There were no cell phones or game systems to occupy my time. My family had an old black and white television set. I loved to watch The Price is Right in the days before Bob Barker’s hair turned white. After the show was over, the only way to kill time was to play outside and wander down to the creek that ran parallel to our property. There was a secret trail buried in the wall of trees that lined our two acre yard. My brother and I would slide down the trail, landing on the dirt banks like explorers on a mission. Sometimes we would hunt for crawdads under rocks. Other times we would take our poles and fish. We never went into the water after the time I got bit by a gar.…

The main peak of the mountain lay ahead of them, and two other peaks stood out at both left and right. The mountain ridgeline hugged the chair lift and extended far back behind the skiers creating a winding valley. Beyond the ridgeline to the right lay an open meadow high in the Sierras that was invisible to the lift sitters. A gap between two peaks to the left revealed the breathtaking view of Lake Tahoe. A blue blotch on an evergreen canvass. The land was carved out to perfection, leaving no detail, however miniscule, out.…
